Big thanks to everyone who came out to Beats Maneuver with DJ Heather and Team Zapata on Sunday! Another super fun time on the rooftop at Public Bar! We’re taking a few weeks off with Beats Maneuver, but we’ll be back on Sunday August 12 with an epic line up hosted by New York’s finest Rissa Garcia, making her Washington DC debut. Not to be missed! I also want to give a big shout out to DJ Soul for last Saturday’s Skate Fever! at  Anacostia Skate Pavilion. An amazing idea, and whole lot of fun! Great sets from Hot CoffeeKatrina MirDJ SoulBenoit, and it was nothing short of amazing seeing  Katrina Mir throw down a DJ set in roller skates! The next Skate Fever! is on September 3, so mark it in your calendar, dust off your roller skates, and get ready to groove at the roller disco. And if you don’t have skates, don’t worry! Skate rentals at the Anacostia Skate Pavilion are 100% free.

Ok, on to this weekend. Got a bunch of gigs to get ready for this weekend, so will have to make this quick. Friday night, Katrina Mir and I will be opening up the room at U Street Music Hall for Anthony Naples and local heroes Rush Plus at what promises to be an amazing night of music. Spinning at U Street Music Hall is always a joy, and we can’t wait to set the tone for the evening. Tickets are just $10, in advance or on the door. Hope to see you there!

One last thing before this week’s DC House Grooves Top Pick links, a new Meet the Locals podcast from Steve Kirn. A welcome change of pace from recent mixes on the podcast, this one is 80 minutes of hypnotic dark techno, not too fast, just the way we like it.

You can catch Steve Kirn next at Blueprint featuring Monix alongside Sequence‘s Ron Jackson at Jimmy Valentine’s Lonely Hearts Club on July 28.

OK, on to this week’s DC House Grooves Top Pick links. Just click the link for each day to see my list of events for each day. Wish I had time to compile them all here, but there’s just so many great events happening these days, I just don’t have enough hours in the day to list them all here.

Right.. gotta sign off now. Need to pick out records for Friday night and get some tracks ripped for Saturday. DC House Grooves Top Picks of the Best Underground House and Electronic Music Events in Washington DC July 12 to July 15

Huge thanks to everyone who joined us in the Flash Bar on Saturday for the second part of our DC House Grooves 4 Year Anniversary celebration. It’s always kinda slow in the bar, but as always the last hour or two was crazy! Let’s face it, with Patrice Scott and Benoit in the Green Room and Giles Smith & James Priestly  of  Secretsundaze on the club level, there was tough competition for dancers, so I don’t think we did too badly. A testament to the world class quality talent Flash is booking, week in, week out. Big thanks to the team at Flash for inviting us to play. Katrina and I truly appreciate it. Massive thanks also to  Vanniety Kills for inviting me to play at The House That U Built at El Techo on Sunday, to the whole team at El Techo, and to all the dancers who joined us on the rooftop. After an amazing set from Juana, I had a really special time breaking out the soulful house and disco as the sun set on a beautiful day! Thank you so much to everyone involved. Hoping to post the recording soon! Look out for the next The House That U Built with Vanniety KillsSam Burns and Kochi coming up in August.

The big news announced this week is the Blispop Disco Fest coming up on August 31 and September 1 at 9:30 Club and U Street Music Hall, featuring a line up to die for, with Giorgio Moroder, ClaptoneHoly Ghost, Horsemeat DiscoUltra Naté, Nancy Whang, François KJuan MacleanJacques Renault and locals Eau ClaireCharles Feelgood, the Sleaze DJsOzker Will Eastman. How many legit legends on that line up?  A serious weekend of music right there! The only problem now is deciding whether to attend the 9:30 Club line up or the U Street Music Hall line up. Now, with line ups of that calibre, it ain’t going to be cheap, but if you move fast, you can grab discounted 2 day passes for both the 9:30 Club and U Street Music Hall.

Just got back from a few hours at the 628 Boys x ROAM Daytime BBQ, chilling to sets from Grand Ancestor‘s Yola and Hot Coffee delivered on the impeccable Grand Ancestor system, with Juan Zapata working the grill like he werks a set of decks. A perfect way to spend the afternoon this fine July 4, but I had to leave before I got too comfortable! Would have been all too easy to stay there late into the night, but sadly had to tear myself away to go get stuff done. After all, these posts don’t write themselves! Thanks to everyone who braved the heat last Sunday to join us on the rooftop at Public Bar for Beats Maneuver with Yuko Jikido! It wasn’t the best turn out we’ve had, but that makes us appreciate those who did show up all the more! You guys rock. Yuko really delivered the goods, and those who were there really made the most of it on the dance floor! Huge props also to RamirezKatrina Mir and Joe L for their amazing sets. Katrina in particular deserves a medal for delivering an epic three hour all vinyl set in that heat! Can’t wait until our next Beats Maneuver event on July 15 with Chicago’s DJ Heather and Team Zapata. Shaping up to be the best one yet! Here’s hoping the temperature is just a few degrees lower.

DC House Grooves Top Picks of the Best Underground House and Electronic Music Events in Washington DC June 28 to July 4

Four years ago, as 4th July weekend approached, I decided to write a post on DC House Grooves summarizing all the best events happening over the holiday weekend. Since that first post, I’ve posted pretty much every week, documenting all the best underground house and electronic music events in our fair city. Fun to look back and see what was on that holiday weekend, with Lost on ThursdaysROAM IVFlash of JulySoundwaves Boat Party and so on. Amazing to see how things have progressed since then, too!  I started writing things up every week not just to provide a useful guide to all the best events for people new to DC who may not know where to go, but also to provide a record of all the amazing events happening in DC, so they wouldn’t just become hazy, distant memories, lost in the fog of good times on the dance floor. It’s kinda fun to look back on the DC House Grooves archives and see what was happening on any given weekend. Just select a month and year using the Archives drop down in the side bar.  Anyway, here we are, four years later, and I’m still going. Not exactly sure why, but I guess I’ll keep things going until I know it’s time to stop.

So what’s going on as we approach July 4 this year? Well, we plan on kicking off our 4 year anniversary celebrations this Sunday at the fourth edition of Beats Maneuver with NYC’s Yuko JikidoJoe L and residents Katrina Mir and Ramirez. We’ve had some great times on the rooftop at Public Bar already this summer, and we’re just getting started! I’m really excited about this line up, to. Yuko Jikido is a headliner you’ve got to hear for yourself, bangin’ da box like there’s no tomorrow, Katrina Mir and Ramirez are two of the best DJs I know, each with their own individual style, but always delivering the goods, throwing down badass underground tracks all night long, with the icing on the cake being one of my favorite local talents, Joe L, a DJ who always, and I mean always, gets my attention and keeps me on the dance floor. The needle drops at 6pm, there’s no cover, and we’ll be housin’ it up until the lights come on, so join us on the rooftop for Beats Maneuver this Sunday to celebrate 4 years of DC House Grooves!

RSVP: https://www.facebook.com/events/236866293568551/

..and that’s just part one of our birthday celebrations! Katrina Mir and I will be continuing the celebrations on Saturday July 7 in the Flash Bar, while power duo Giles Smith James Priestly aka  Secretsundaze bring the heat on the club level. Always a good time when the Secretsundaze crew come to town. Gonna be another amazing night at Flash!

On Sunday, obviously we’d love it if you could join us on the rooftop to celebrate our four year anniversary at Beats Maneuver with Yuko JikidoKatrina MirRamirez and Joe L, but there’s a couple of other great options to get your groove on if you feel like bouncing around. Sunday Love at Flash features one of my favorite artists Janeret making his debut appearance around these parts, and Sunday’s Rooftop at Eighteenth Street Lounge  features none other than Prescription and Future Vision legend Ron Trent with  Benoit on support. Another great booking for Sundays RooftopESL and Public Bar are right next door to each other, so bouncing between dance floors is definitely an option, and just think of all that good exercise climbing up and down those stairs 🙂

Your best bet for Independence Day is to hope someone can’t make the sold out ROAM on a Boat party. Alternatively, you could check out Sundown with Jasper James at Flash. I used to know his dad back in Glasgow way back when. I can’t speak to Jasper, but his old man Harri is one hell of a DJ!

That’s it for this week’s post. I hope to see you on the rooftop at Public Bar for Beats Maneuver this Sunday, and I’ll be back here, same time, same place next week, heading into my fifth year of writing up the best underground house and electronic music events in and around Washington DC. See you on the dance floor!
