So much good stuff in there, it’s going to be tough to choose! Thursday night kicks off with the latest edition of Chadwick‘s Headroom Listening Sessions at Flash, where you can hear the latest productions from DC’s many talented producers showcased on  Flash‘s  Funktion One sound system. If you’re an aspiring producer yourself, it’s a great way to network with other local producers, and if you’re not, it’s a great way to hear amazing new tracks, hot off the press. Four tracks premiered at HEADROOM recently have charted on Beatport, including one that reach #1 in the techno chart and #4 in the sales chart, so get yourself down there to hear what’s going to be putting DC on the map in the coming months!

In terms of other highlights this weekend, Playlist with  Jubilee Ramirez  at Eighteenth Street Lounge is always a great bet for Thursday nights, then on Friday there’s so much to choose from, I don’t know where to start. At Flash, the man, the legend Danny Tenaglia makes his Flash debut with support from Navbox. It’s gonna be a packed house, make no mistake, so be sure you pick up advanced tickets if you want to reserve your spot on the dance floor. If proper techno in a warehouse with a banging sound system is more your cup o’tea, then put Sequence.313_DJ Stingray on your itinerary. The Sequence crew have assembled another incredible line up, featuring DJ StingrayAurora Halal, local hero & Discwoman member JuanaTheta FluxAssociate. This one’s an official Movement Festival pre-party, and with sound by Grand Ancestor, you know you’re gonna feel it!

Saturday night, all roads lead to ROAM XVII, but before that, I recommend hitting up either DeWalta with Jubilee at FlashThe NeedleXchange: 5 Years Wrong with Clark Price at Zeba Bar or An Evening with DJs LoveGrove, J Mack, & Guillermo Giraldo at Jimmy Valentine’s. All fantastic options to get yourself warmed up for the warehouse.

On Sunday, another edition of Sunday Love at Flash brings Martin Buttrich to the rooftop, with support from Sarah MyersJubileeConscious Contact, while over at El TechoSticky Fingers‘ Hot Coffee joins TNX‘s Bil Todd for an afternoon of sunny underground grooves. As always, Eighteenth Street Lounge should be your final destination to close out the weekend, with Sam BurnsKeenan Orr and another edition of Sundays Rooftop with Francis Harris and Benoit.

Carlo Lio Q&A and Free Ticket Giveaway

Carlo_lioToronto’s Carlo Lio (Rawthentic Music, Toronto & SCI + TEC, USA) is coming to DC next Friday, December 12 for a gig at U Street Music Hall, supported by locals Ron Schubert and Oliver Caine. DC House Grooves is giving away two free tickets to this event. Read on to learn how to enter the draw for a chance to win.  In anticipation of Carlo’s visit to DC, we took the opportunity to catch up with him for a quick Q & A:

Carlo Lio – a well-known name in your hometown of Toronto – how did your career start as a DJ and develop into the sound you produce today?

The Toronto rave scene is where I really learned about this new underground world. We had great local talent in Toronto and it was partially because of these guys that I wanted to become a DJ I would go listen to the local DJ’s just as much as I would go see a headliner from another country. The foundation of my sound was developed a lot from the homegrown talent. I managed to start getting a few bookings here and there, and if you know Toronto, you will know that we have the best loyal fans ever. I quickly became one of the main DJs in the city and continued to grow from there. Toronto has always had my back!

Who/what are your biggest influences?

I find it almost impossible to name just one. But guys like Dubfire and Carl Cox have always been at the top of my list, and I think they are for many others out there. Musically and personally they are people I look up to, and want to be like, in the hope that I ever get the opportunity to get to their position.

So can you define your sound for us in just 3 words?

PHAT – HYPNOTIC – GROOVY

What do you think is the recipe for the best club night or set?

Great sound system for sure – that includes the sound and monitors in the booth too. It’s so much better when you can hear what the crowd can to a certain extent. You can really get into what you’re playing. The crowds and fans of course, are the main draw, and without them there is no atmosphere. I am lucky enough to get to play regularly with my friends too, a night playing B2B with your hometown friends is so much fun.

What have been some defining moments of your career?

The one main moment that sticks out for me and really gave me the boost to the next level was after I released a track called “Breakfast in Bag” on Paul Ritch’s label QUARTZ. This was the defining track in my career that turned a lot of heads in my direction and took notice to who I was. It was played by literally every DJ I can think of. It was the stepping-stone to getting signed to an agency, and to start touring.

What’s next on your schedule in terms of gigs as well as musically? Anything in particular we should be looking out for?

Gigs, I have a lot of stuff going on now in North and South America, as well as Canada and back in my hometown of Toronto for UNION on New Years Eve which is always fun. Next year we start to head back to Europe, so looking forward to that as there is always some great festivals. Musically – I have  a EP coming out early next year on Nicole Moudaber’s label MOOD called ‘’DeeBUG’’. Coming out before the end of this year I also have a remix of an Audion track called ‘’Motormouth’’ on Spectral Sound and my next EP will be out on Carl Cox’s label – INTEC, called ‘’Escobar Season’’.
