Nü Androids & Flash Present Kenny Larkin with Navbox & Raffi at Flash
Almost time for the weekend again, and that means it’s time for another Weekend Round Up from DC House Grooves. Despite the terrible weather last weekend, there was still some great partying to be had. In particular, we’re thinking of our favorite locals party ROAM, for which a sturdy band of revelers braved the elements and danced until dawn. We were snowed in at DC House Grooves HQ, unable to escape the neighborhood, but we saw the pics and updates from the party, and wished we could have been there. We can’t wait till the next ROAM party, and we’ll make sure to have some DC House Grooves representation on the dance floor.
Before we move on to his week’s picks, we’ve got another installment of the DC House Grooves Meet the Locals Podcast for you. Episode #11 of our podcast series showcasing DJs from DC and the surrounding area is an exclusive mix from Auricle Recordings label boss Rodd Simm, recorded live at Fusion Factory in Denver on February 7, 2015. Over two hours of tech house and techno grooves to get you in the mood for the weekend.
Make sure you follow us on SoundCloud to get instant updates when we add new mixes, and have a listen to our past mixes. Over 51 mixes and counting from Andy Grant and other local DJs.

Here goes with something new: the DC House Groove Mideweek Round Up. Recently we’ve started to see some great parties showing up on Wednesday night, but since we only cover Thursday to Sunday in the weekend round up, we haven’t been covering them. Why not just publish the weekend round up a couple of days earlier, you ask? Well, it takes a few days to compile and write the Weekend Round Up, and since some weekend events aren’t announced until Wednesday or Thursday, publishing on Tuesday isn’t an option. We figured we’d try out a Midweek Round Up covering Wednesday night events, published each week on Wednesday morning, to see if it works. Same format as the Weekend Round Up, with our picks of the best events, then listings of everything we know about. Check it out, and let us know what you think.
Before we dive in to the Wednesday picks, here’s something to listen to today to get you warmed up for Wednesday night: the full recording of Body Werk with Andy Grant and R&B, recorded live in the Flash Bar on February 13, for the most part playing back to back to back. 6 hours of quality grooves to get you through your working day!
So here are our picks for Wednesday night. Some really great events here if you’re up for a spot of midweek grooving. Make sure you click through the the event page and click Join if you plan on attending.
Silence in Metropolis presents SIM Selections at Bump’n’Grind
First up for Wednesday is Silence in Metropolis presents SIM Selections at Bump’n’Grind coffee shop in Silver Spring. From 7pm to 9pm, DJs from local record label Silence in Metropolis will be spinning their favorite new tunes on vinyl. Expect quality deep house grooves, coffee shop style. Stop by the shop, grab a cup of their fine, expertly prepared, coffee and a sandwich, sit back and enjoy the SIM selections. While you’re there, check out the vinyl for sale, and maybe pick up a few twelves to take home with you. If you can’t make it to the store, you can tune in on the Bump’n’Grind Mixlr page.
Top pick for Wednesday night is MK with Beckwith & DJ Nav at U Street Music Hall. To anyone who was tuned into the deep house scene in the 90s, MK should need no introduction. A hugely prolific remixer, his Discogs page lists no less than 504 remix credits. His instantly recognizable remix style was behind countless classic deep house tunes in the early nineties, and his mixes brought credibility and whole new audiences to artists who would have otherwise never seen the light of day. Case in point, his ground breaking The Dub of Doom mix of Nightcrawlers – Push The Feeling On, which, after a couple of years of regular play in underground clubs, broke through to the mainstream and reached number 3 on the UK singles chart in 1995. You’d be hard pushed to find anyone who can tell you what the original track sounds like, but play them the The Dub of Doom and you’ll see instant recognition. From the late nineties through the early 2000s, MK seemed to take a break from production, but the last few years have seen him back in the saddle, with new original productions, remixes and collaborations with artists such as Omar S and Lee Foss. We’re not sure whether he’ll be bringing the newer stuff to U Hall on Wednesday night, or whether he’ll be walking down memory lane, throwing down a greatest hits set, but whichever way it goes, we predict a great night out. Advanced tickets are $15 from Ticketfly, but it is free before 11pm for 21+, so you’ve got a great incentive to get there early to catch producer DJ Nav‘s set.
Our other pick for Wednesday night is Nu AndroidsPresentsFriend Within at Flash, with support from local favorite Chris Nitti (ROAM, U Street Music Hall) and DJ MLEM, and DJ Khaleel in the Flash Bar. The Nu Androids crew have been bringing some great talent to Flash recently, and we’ve heard great things about the vibe at their parties. While we can’t say we’re overly keen on the headliner Wednesday night, this is a great opportunity to hear Chris Nitti work his magic on Flash’s fine sound system, and we’re sure the Wednesday crowd will make for a fun night on the dance floor. Keep a close eye on the Nu Androids Wednesday parties, though. Next week’s headliner is Detroit legend Kenny Larkin, with support from Navbox and Raffi. A solid candidate for next week’s Midweek Round Up top pick! Advanced tickets are $15 from Ticketfly. 21+.
That’s all we’ve got for our inaugural edition of the DC House Grooves Midweek Round Up. Let us know what you think. If you all find it useful, it might just become a regular thing. Look out tomorrow for the next edition of the DC House Grooves Weekend Round Up!
