No DC House Grooves Weekend Round Up this week…we’re heading off on summer vacation, so no time to pull it all together. When we get back, we’ll be looking for contributors to help avoid these situations in future. If you’re interested in helping out with DC House Grooves, please get in touch.
Since we’re not doing the regular post this week, we figured the least we could do would be to offer a few suggestions for the best underground house in town, so here goes:
Thursday July 16:
Summer Love: A Happy Hour Fundraiser for LLS at Flash – dance the night away on the Flash rooftop for a great cause, the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. A great local line up featuring DJ Lisa Frank, Navbox, David Rosenberg & Aaron Sparks.
HOUSE-N-U Presents “The Latin Bull” DJ Ruben Toro (Temple) at Zeba Bar – “The Latin Bull” Ruben Toro (Temple), Andrew Hogans and Derrick Coleman bring the finest underground, deep and soulful house to our favorite neighborhood dance floor. No cover.
Kowli | Deep Secrets | Nomad present :Artscape AfterHours with M A R T I N E Z – proper underground after hours up in Baltimore, featuring Martinez, with local support from Raffi and R&B (Rosario & Benoit). $10 Presale | $15 at the door.
^SUNDAY’S ROOFTOP^ w/ S.A.M. (Copenhagen) : Sarah Myers : DJ Lisa Frank* – serious contender for party of the summer here. we’re absolutely gutted to be missing this! One of our favorite artists, S.A.M, supported by local deep house royalty DJ Lisa Frank & Sarah Myers. DO NOT MISS THIS ONE! We expect a full report afterwards.
…and with that, we’re outta here. See you all in a couple of weeks… and mark August 8 in your calendars…Andy Grant will be making his Deep Sugar debut at Ultra Naté‘s Deep Sugar party at the Paradox in Baltimore.
Here we go again…with another weekend behind us and another one fast approaching, its time to dive in to another Weekend Round Up. Looks like another huge weekend in the District, but before we get into it, we’re going to take a minute to encourage you all to get out and support some of the smaller events featuring local DJs. The good people throwing these events aren’t out to take your hard earned money; more often than not they aren’t even out to make a buck. These are passionate individuals looking to share their passion with an audience, and they are a crucial part of a healthy local scene. We’ve been to a few very lightly attended events lately, and its a shame to see the major venues overflowing, week in, week out, as everyone flocks to see the latest big name flown in from Europe, while some of the smaller events are struggling to draw even a few people. There are so many great DJs and producers in this town playing a wide variety of quality electronic beats to suit every taste. Rather than chasing the big names, why not try something new for a change, and check out some of the smaller, local events? You could arrange to meet your friends at one of these events before heading to catch the headliner elsewhere. Worst case, you’ll save some cash and hear some great music. Introduce yourself to the DJs, and you’ll likely make some great new friends… and when they break through to the big time, you’ll be able to say you were there supporting them from the start. Support your local talent and help the DC scene thrive!
Right… time to step off the soap box and get on with this week’s post. Before we get into our picks, we’ve got some more mixes to share with you. First up, we’ve got installments 5 and 6 of the FORWARD Infinity mix series, from Foreverthewin and Noah Pred, both mixes demonstrating the huge variety and quality you can expect to encounter at FORWARD 2015. Tier One passes are now available for FORWARD 2015 for the amazing price of $100, which gets you entry into all preview and festival events, plus the FORWARD 2015 swag bag. Grab yours now before the price goes up! Make sure you follow FORWARD on Soundcloud to get all the mixes in the Infinity series.
We’ve also got Andy Grant‘s opening set from Body Werk with Andy Grant & Solomon Sanchez on March 14. Some laid back house tunes taking you from zero to disco in 75 minutes.
OK, time for this week’s picks. It has become increasingly difficult and time consuming for us to write up everything that’s worth going to each week. So many great events, so little time to write them up! We’ll do our best to cover as much as we can, but we just can’t cover everything. Please don’t get upset or offended if your event doesn’t get a write up. We try and spread the love around as much as possible, so if your event isn’t included this week, we’ll likely cover it in future. With that disclaimer in mind, let’s get on with it! If you plan on attending an event, don’t forget to click through to the event page and click Join.
Gui Boratto with Chadwick, Jandro at U Street Music Hall
Top pick for Thursday night is Gui Boratto‘s rescheduled appearance at U Street Music Hall, with local support from Chadwick and Jandro. We expect a packed house at U Hall as Brazil’s finest brings the heat to the U Hall sound system. The heat ain’t cheap, though, with advanced tickets for $20 from Ticketfly. Make sure you get there early to support your locals, but if you don’t catch Chadwick, you can catch him again at our Body Werk party at DC9 Nightclub in a couple of weeks. Tickets from the 10/1 date will be honored. 18+.
Lost Originals feat. Chris Nitti (Roam/DC) / Brian Monaco (More Music/DC) at Lost Society
If no cover is more your thing, our other pick for Thursday night is Lost on Thursdays: Lost Originals with Chris Nitti & Brian Monaco, making up for their snow cancellation a couple of weeks back. With an all local line up at our favorite weekly Thursday night party, you’ve got a recipe for a fun Thursday night out. We know you’re all familiar with Chris Nitti, but Brian Monaco‘s name might not be familiar. While we haven’t heard him play out yet, we’ve heard his submission to the DC House Grooves Meet the Locals Podcast, and it’s really good! Perfect material for the Lost rooftop. Check DC House Grooves for the podcast over the coming week, and make sure you get to Lost early to catch Brian’s set. No cover, all the usual drinks specials. 21+.
Matt Tolfrey, BirdsMakingMachine & Sarah Myers at Flash, #BODYFEEL with Throe and Teszero in the Flash Bar
Our top pick for Friday night is Leftroom Records boss Matt Tolfrey and Birdsmakingmaching with local support from Sarah Myers at Flash. If we remember rightly, the last time we heard Matt Tolfrey was at a hastily re-located Loop party a few years back. We’re hoping things go a bit more smoothly this time around, and we’re looking forward to hearing what he’s playing these days. We’re huge fans of Birdsmakingmachine‘s minimal sounds. Anyone who heard their set at last summer’s Sundays Rooftop party will know they’re in for a treat, and the icing on the cake is an opening set from Flash resident Sarah Myers. Down in the Flash Bar, its another edition of #Bodyfeel, with Throe and Teszero. At the time of writing, early bird tickets are still available for $7 from Ticketfly, which is great value for such a great lineup. More on the door. We’ll be getting there early to hear Sarah’s set, and we recommend you do the same! 21+.

Detroit Swindle with Shawn Q at U Street Music Hall
Over at U Street Music Hall, Detroit Swindle take over the dance floor, with local support from Baltimore native Shawn Q. If you’ve been paying attention the last couple of years, then Detroit Swindle should need no introduction, and you can expect a great dance floor work out this Friday. GFM Presents: Night Waves with Jett Chandon, Jimmy James & Tek-13 at Jimmy Valentine’s
Jett Chandon headlining a night of house, garage and bass at Jimmy V’s, with no cover. If we could be in five places at once, we’d be sure to head over to Jimmy’s this Friday.
ROAM DJs on the Roof with Lisa Frank, Chris Nitti & Sami Y at Rock’n’Roll Hotel
Our pre-game pick for Saturday night is ROAM DJs on the Roof at Rock’n’Roll Hotel on H Street, where the ROAM DJs Lisa Frank, Chris Nitti & Sami Y will be throwing down the right tunes to get you warmed up for Saturday night out on the town. Thursday March 26
Gui Boratto with Chadwick, Jandro at U Street Music Hall
We’ve had a great year here at DC House Grooves during 2014. We started the weekly DC House Grooves Weekend Round Up, we started our regular night Body Werk, and we did our bit to help promote this great underground house music scene that we have here in DC. Looking back through all the posts from 2014, we realized that we had pretty much all the event flyers for every event that mattered in DC from when we started the Weekend Round Up back in July to the end of the year, so we figured we should do something with them. We wanted to create something that represented Washington DC, leveraging all the event flyers we had collected. So here it is: based on a design created by Graham Jackson, here is the DC flag as you’ve never seen it before, generated entirely from flyer images for events in DC from July to December 2014. Click on the image to see the full size version, then zoom in to see the details.
Big thanks to all the promoters and DJs in DC for all your efforts throwing amazing events, and thanks to all the designers for the amazing creativity you channel into all the flyer images.
Happy New Year from DC House Grooves, and here’s looking to an amazing 2015 in Washington, DC!
OK lots to cover this week before we dive in to our picks and listings for the week, so we’re going to skip the round up of all the extended Thanksgiving Weekend activities. Lets just say there was plenty of untz untz, and more than a little boots and pants, and everyone had a great time! First up is a reminder that on Wednesday next week at U Street Music Hall there’s the DanceSafe DC Happy Hour.
If you haven’t joined the event yet, please head over to the event page for the full details, and click Join! There’s a $5 donation at the door, 100% of which goes towards DanceSafe, and after the happy hour you’ll get free entry to Tube & Berger with The Elders & Ozker. This event has the full support of DC House Grooves, and we hope to see you all there! If you’re unfamiliar with what DanceSafe does, or what your donation will be funding, this explains it all:
Next up, we’ve got a couple of bits of news about our Body Werk party. Our next Body Werk event is on Thursday December 11 in the Flash Bar as part of the SubDistrick 3 Year Anniversary + Translation Recordings 10 Year Anniversary featuring LOXY. Andy Grant and Joe L (Push / Bump’n’Grind | DC) will be werkin’ the Flash Bar from open to close, while Loxy, Bass Avengers and Lyceum lay down the drum & bass up on the main floor.
Then, coming up on Saturday December 13, we’ve got our next Body Werk event at DC9 Nightclub, with Aaron Sparks (Push | DC) and Andy Grant going back to back serving up nothing but the freshest underground house cuts fresh from the vinyl, while Kochi (iNK House / Sugar Shack Recordings | DC) werks the rooftop open to close. Anyone who came to our last event at DC9 with R&B knows all about the amazing Void Acoustics sound system. It really is a bit special, and you’ll no doubt want to check it out for yourself. Body Werk: the best underground house from the best local DJs. No cover, no bullshit.
And finally before we get into the picks and listings for this week, the FORWARD DC crewhave announced the dates and theme for DC’s premiere boutique electronic music festival, FORWARD 2015. The festival will run from May 13 to May 17 2015, and the theme for the festival is Infinity. The Forward festival is always a huge high point for electronic music in Washington DC each year, so we couldn’t be more excited. Make sure you like the FORWARD Facebook page for news and info about the festival:
The FORWARD team also published the first in their mix series leading up to FORWARD 2015, inspired by the festival theme, Infinity. The first mix is from one of DC’s finest, DJ Lisa Frank, and it’s a great mix! Check it out while you’re reviewing this week’s picks and listings.
Right, with all that news out of the way, let’s dig in and take a look at this week’s picks. If you plan on attending an event, click through to the Facebook event page, click Join to let the promoters know you’re in, then click Invite and invite your friends.
Lost on Thurdays with Andy Grant (DC House Grooves), Jubilee (Slope Traxx) & Ramirez (Slope Traxx) at Lost Society
Our top pick for the best underground house on Thursday night is Lost on Thursdays at Lost Society. This week Lost’s guests are our very own Andy Grant, Jubilee (Slope Traxx) and Ramirez (Slope Traxx). The last time these three played at Lost was an amazing night of quality tunes, and you can expect this one to be no different. Always a great night on the Lost rooftop! No cover, and all the usual drinks specials.
Our top pick for Thursday for those of you looking for the best drum and bass in town is Cadence at Flash, with Lenzman making his US debut, with support from Slant (2Tuff), Joanna O (Turnstyle RVA) and Illogic (Cadence). Downstairs in the Flash Bar, the Bump’n’Grind residents Joe L (Bump’n’Grind Push), Refugee (Bump’n’Grind, Deep Sessions, 88) and Dave (Bump’n’Grind, 88, Forward) laying down the grooves. This is a much anticipated US debut for Lenzman, and there’s a lot of buzz for this event! First release tickets are all sold out, but you can still grab advanced tickets for $12 from Ticketfly. Move fast though, as advanced tickets will sell out.
If quality underground house and techno in a more intimate setting is more your thing, then our pick for you is Transmission 4/4 with Charles Martin (DC) and Philip Goyette (ESL | DC) at Velvet Lounge. Charles and Philip are both great DJs, and this is a great opportunity to hear them doing their thing open to close. No cover.
If a bit of soulful house off the beaten path is more your thing, then we recommend you check out Fusion: Soulful House Edition at Treehouse Lounge in North East. The selectors for this edition of Fusion are Keith Miller (The Ground), Shadrach and DJ Christopher. We have it on good authority that Keith Miller killed it at a recent gig in the Flash Bar, so definitely worth your time checking this one out for some fine soulful house vibes. 21+, no cover and plenty of street parking.
Last, but not least, for Thursday, for a more grown up affair, check out Gryphon After Dark at The Gryphon. Described asjazz singer, meets piano bar, meets cabaret, meets DC 2014, this new concept from our friends at One Love Massive is a great bet for quality entertainment if you’re wanting something a little more classy.
Our top pick for Friday is Double 07 & Cire Marcos at The Lodge at Redrocks. Double 07 is one of our favorite local DJs, and he’ll be celebrating his birthday in style with Cire Marcos at H Street’s coolest new venue. We’re looking forward to stopping by to enjoy some quality deep house and debauchery, and we hope to see you there. No cover, 21+.
Our next pick for Friday night is Max Cooper with Chris Nitti & Navbox at U Street Music Hall. We’re not too familiar with Max Cooper, but locals Chris and Navbox are always worth catching, particularly when they are working the U Hall sound system. Advanced tickets are $10, but it is free before 11pm for 21+.
Next up for Friday is Baltotroit in the intimate setting of Dr. Clock’s Nowhere Bar, where Detroit and Baltimore will be joining forces to bring you quality techno all night long, with DJs Boss Ross and Steve Kirn. Top tunes, good friends, no cover.
Our final pick for Friday, and the best bet if you’re in Baltimore, is Red Maple Fridays presents Juan Zapataand DJ Lovegrove at The Red Maple. Lovegrove and Juan are two of the longest serving area DJs, and between them they’re bringing north of 40 years experience behind the decks. This is the place you want to be if you want to hear two of the Baltimore / Washington area’s best underground house DJs working a dance floor. 21+.
So much on this Saturday, so pay close attention and choose wisely! We kick off Saturday with a radio pick, the Acrobeats Radio Show w/ Guest Dj Earic Patten on DelightRadioFM Greece. Former Tracks DC resident, Strictly Rhythm recording artist and DC local Earic Patten will be hitting the Internet airwaves for the first time from Greece, playing a very special set with a southern mediterranean vibe. The show kicks off at 1pm ET, and you can tune in at http://www.delightradio.fm/.
Our top pick for Saturday out on the town is Amalgamation with Wheez-ie & Joe Nice along with local selectors Refugee B2B with Panch & Jett Chandon at our favorite neighborhood venue Zeba Bar. Amalgamation is a new concept from Refugee, bringing you a multi genre night where anything goes, as long as you can groove to it. With so many genre specific nights to choose from, this is probably the only place in town on Saturday where you’ll find a range of genres all under one roof. House, drum and bass, bass, breaks, garage, dubstep, two-step.. they’ve got something for everyone. We recently had Jett Chandon on the DC House Grooves radio show, and she blew us away, so we recommend you get there for her set. We’ve been slacking on posting the recording of that show, but we’ll be posting it soon. 21+, no cover.
With deep house, garage, disco and eclectic sounds from a fine selection of local DJs across three dance floors, Eighteenth Street Lounge is a great choice for Saturday night. Out on the patio, P-Sol and Bil Todd will be selecting the tunes, with former DC House Grooves radio show guests Philip Goyette and DJ Nav doing it right in the Gold Room, and Caleb L’Etoile at the controls in the Main Room. Always a fun night at ESL!
For some proper dance floor mayhem on Saturday night, stop into Flash for an incredible lineup headlined by Detroit legend Kevin Saunderson returning to unleash mayhem on the Funktion Ones for a second time, with support from Silvie Loto and local Parker. Down in the Flash Bar, Wizdom Entertainment will be providing the tunes, with a lineup including Dino, Alozon Wainwright and Heather Femia. If you’ve not heard Kevin Saunderson before, this is your chance to catch a techno legend on one of the best sound systems in town. Advanced tickets are available for the bargain basement price of $10 from Ticketfly, more on the door.
Our final pick for Saturday is strictly speaking a Sunday pick, since it kicks off at 3am and goes until whenever. There’s No Place Like )'(ome isthe official after party for the sold out Naughty Snowball, hosted at the Dance Loft on 14th. We’re not down with the cool kids from Naughty Snowball, so we know very little about this, other than what looks like a tasty lineup including Paul Geddes (DISRIKT, DC), Marko Peli (PEX, Nomad, DC), Twinflame (Blackbird Squadron / The Athena Collective), Dan Rabbitt (Beemore / Garden of Heathens / Bmore), Zoologic (Misanthrope Inc, Sunday Sol; FOCO, SF), Synz (Mischief, Hiiive, DC), DJ Total (BCDC) and Seeds (Acoustic Combustion). There will be art installations, hookah lounges, chill out areas and all that good stuff. Looks like a great bet for some proper messy afters action for those of you who just refuse to call it a night. Advanced tickets are $15 from Flavorus, $20 on the door.
If you’re still standing by Sunday, for quality soulful house, get yourself over to Eighteenth Street Lounge for Sam Burns’ Underground Soul Solution in the Gold Room, with The Metaphysical in the Main Room. Always a great bet to see out the weekend to the soundtrack of fine house music from the local legend Sam Burns. $5 drinks specials from 9pm to 11pm. 21+.
Modern Class with Trev-Ski and DJ Provoke at Showtime Bar
Our final pick for the weekend is a new night from Trev-ski and DJ Provoke, Modern Class at Showtime Bar. Trev and Provoke promise to deliver modern soul, boogie and cheese wave all night long, served fresh from the vinyl, the way it should be. A great bet if you want to expand your musical horizons and hear rarities you won’t find anywhere else.
That’s it for his week’s picks, so let’s move on to the full listings of all the best underground deep house and electronic music events in Washington DC from Wednesday to Sunday.
