Before getting into it this week, I want to give a big shout out to the students in Professor Molk’s The Art of DJing course at Georgetown University, who I had the privilege of delivering a lecture to this past Monday. While I had hoped to give a demonstration of the art of DJing with vinyl, equipment issues got in the way, so, despite my lost voice, I ended up talking for the full allotted time, hopefully imparting some of the wisdom I’ve gained on the art of DJing along the way. I had some well thought out questions thrown my way during the Q & A, and on the whole it was a very rewarding experience. I hope to see you guys out and about soon! Huge thanks to Professor Molk for inviting me.
OK, heads up: next Saturday, February 24, a couple of DC’s finest warehouse party crews are back, so make sure you choose wisely and grab your advanced tickets now. First up, Sequence returns with Sequence.209 featuring Henning Baer, Faso, Theta Flux, Juana & Ron Jackson and the other star of the show, the Grand Ancestor sound system. Tickets have been flying off the shelf for this one, but if you move fast, $16 second release tickets are still up for grabs.
Next Saturday also sees the welcome return of ROAM, kicking off their 2018 season with ROAM XV featuring heavy hitters Anthony Parasole, Ariel Zetina, DJ Lisa Frank and new ROAM residents Rush Plus & Jett Chandon at an undisclosed warehouse location. Tickets have been flying off the shelf for this one, too, but you can still grab $20 second release tix over on Resident Advisor.
Don’t even ask me to make a recommendation as to which one to go to. Both offer spectacular line ups, both are legit party crews with track records of throwing quality events, sound and crowd will be on point, you really can’t go wrong. It’s a testament to the healthy scene we’ve got going on here in this city that we have two events of this caliber happening the same night. Long may it continue!
Enough about next weekend… DC’s got some great events lined up for us today through Sunday. Highlights this weekend include Uncle Benny’s After Hours Express on Friday, featuring none other than Sistrum Recordings‘ Patrice Scott and support from Samantha Francesca & Benoit, and using the link below, you can get 20% off your advanced tickets. Make sure you grab ’em quick… the only way to guarantee entry. Info and tix using the link below.
Saturday night, we’ll be kicking off the night with another edition of the DC House Grooves Show on Underground Quality Radio. Tune in to start your night off with the right vibe! Then, out on the town, I highly recommend The NeedlExchange with Sticky Fingers Collective at Zeba Bar, followed by another edition of Late Night Mischief, Early Morning Love with local legend DJ Nav, birthday girl DJ Meegs and Team Zapata all werkin’ that amazing Grand Ancestor sound system from the best booth in town. $10 door tax until 2am, $20 after.
Sunday evening, Katrina Mir and I will be opening up proceedings at Public Bar for Sounds of the UK featuring Denney B2B Second City. We’ll be kicking off the night from 8pm, followed by a set from Oliver Caine, then Denney and Second City will close out the night. No work on Monday, so you can have a guilt free Sunday night on the dance floor! Hope to see some familiar faces on the dance floor as we kick things off for the night. It’s free before 9pm, so no excuses! After that it’s $10, then $15 later on in the night.
One last thing before the full list of Top Picks for this week, episode #66 of the DC House Grooves Meet the Locals Podcast from a fixture on the Washington DC scene for many years, Rhythm & Culture label boss Thomas Blondet. This one’s a beautiful soulful house joint, so get ready for the feels.
You can catch Thomas Blondet next at his residency on the patio at Eighteenth Street Lounge on Saturday February 24.
Without further ado, here’s the links to this week’s DC House Grooves Top Picks, Thursday through Sunday. You know the drill by now: each link takes you to a search results page over on Facebook listing my Top Picks for each day. Then just click through and mark yourself Going to any events you’re interested in. Nice and easy.
Right.. that’s it for this week. I need to get busy ripping tracks from the vinyl for Sunday’s gig. See you back here next week, same time, same place. If I don’t see you out there on the dance floor first, that is!
