Last week’s holiday weekend antics were something else. Now you’ve had a few days to recover, you’ll be starting to think about the coming weekend, and yet again DC has you covered with some incredible events. Here are the DC House Grooves recommendations for doing your weekend right.
Thursday July 10
Flash kick off their weekend with a Masquerade Ball, with special guest Claptone, ably supported by locals Marko Pelo and Sunglass Sundays’ Leonardo Lee. Thursday nights at Flash are always quality, and this one promises to be interesting! Wear a mask, and you’ll receive a free cocktail on entry. First release tickets are all sold out, but you can get the second release for $10 from Ticketfly: http://www.ticketfly.com/purchase/event/597607

Further up U Street at Lost Society, you’ll find FLY IN JULY at Lost on Thursdays feat. Maksim Batyunin (MNMLKTCHN). At Lost on Thursdays, you are pretty much guaranteed quality music and a packed dance floor, and on a hot summer night, the roof terrace is where you want to be. I heard Maksim on the Dirty Bar rooftop last year and he absolutely killed it. A strong recommendation for Thursday night.
Free glass of champagne for the ladies all night.
$3 Miller Lites
$6 Vodka Mixes
$5 Flavored Absolut Shots

Downstairs from Lost Society at Tropicalia is Foundation, featuring Dimitri Max, Juan Zapata, Joe L and Ray Casil. These cats are some of the best local producers and DJs in town, and if you’re looking for some dance floor mayhem powered by Tropicalia’s great sound system, this will be a great choice! $5 cover all night, 21+

Finally for Thursday, if you’re looking for something a little more intimate, check out Christauff’s monthly residency at the Marx Cafe in Mount Pleasant. This month his special guest is James Maber. Not much of a dance floor, but a great bet if you’re looking to enjoy some drinks with some great music.

Friday July 11
For something a little bit different for your pre-game on Friday, Forward and Urban Artistry present Electronic Movement at the Montgomery College Cultural Arts Center in Silver Sprint. This is the first in a series of shows featuring Electronic Music paired with choreographed dance and visuals in a theater setting. The night will feature exclusive mixes focused on interpreting 3 specific genres of electronic music curated by Internationally recognized artists. The Forward team are always pushing the boundaries to celebrate electronic music culture and promote it to a wider audience, and this promises to be a very special event, providing a new perspective on the music we all love. A bit of culture before heading out to the club on Friday! Pre-sale tickets are $15, and are available here: http://www.eventbrite.com/e/electronic-movement-tickets-12048961769.
If you can’t make the Friday show, Electronic Movement is on Saturday too.

After Electronic movement, get yourself down to U Street Music Hall for headliner Hector (Desolat), supported by Adam Collins (House on Mute) and Cry Baby (House on Mute). A regular visitor to Washington DC, Hector is always worth going out for. I was lucky enough to open for him at Lost on Thursdays last year, and he rocked the place. Hector + the U Street Music Hall sound system will be something special. Cover is $10, but if you get there before 12am, its free for 21+.

Finally for Friday, Flash has Taimur & Fahad from Blkmarket Membership playing an open to close set. I’ve heard Taimur rocking the Flash system before, and all I can say is… GO! As long as you can handle the Flash Friday night crowds, you’ll be dancing your ass off all night long. Free before 11pm, $10 after.

Saturday July 12
If you didn’t make it to Electronic Movement on Friday night, you’ve got another chance to check it out on Saturday night, so get yourself up to Silver Spring before you head out on the town.

A strong recommendation for Saturday night is Navbox’s birthday celebration at Flash, with locals Juan Zapata, DJ Lisa Frank and Navbox himself. Juan and Lisa have both guested on the DC House Grooves radio show before, and they never disappoint, and Navbox always delivers. Definitely worth checking out if you’re planning on heading to U Street for your Saturday night. No cover before 11pm, $12 after.

Across town at Eighteenth Street Lounge, you’ll find disco and house legend John Morales in the Gold Room, supported by ESL regular Philip Goyette, with Mr. Bonkerz on the patio and Smudge in the Main Room. Something for everyone if you’re looking for variety under one roof.

If you’re up in Adams Morgan, my recommendation is that you head to Napoleon Bistro for locals Jubilee and Yaco, with support from Daniel Terrazas. Napoleon is an intimate venue with a great vibe, and Jubilee, who recently guested on the DC House Grooves radio show, has been killing it with his productions lately. Look out for releases coming soon on his Slope Traxx label. Definitely one for the heads. No cover, no dress code. 21+.

Next up for Saturday night is Joe L’s monthly night PUSH at Jimmy Valentine’s Lonely Hearts Club up on Bladensburg Road in north east. If you want to escape the crazy Saturday night crowds and get down with the real heads, this is the place to be. I can guarantee the music will blow you away with this ridiculous local line up. DJ Nav, another recent guest on the DC House Grooves show, has some amazing productions under his belt recently, and I’m sure he’ll be breaking out his best tunes. Joe L and Rusty B always kill it. Not to be missed! No event page for this one, but it kicks off at 10pm up at Jimmy Valentine’s. No cover. 21+.

And last, but by no means least, finish your Saturday night off right with the Deep Sugar after hours at the legendary Paradox in Baltimore with Lisa Moody, Donna Edwards, Lil Ray, The Elders and Mookie Brock. Described as the best house night on the East Coast, it is well worth the trip up from DC for the best tunes and a real family vibe. When the club closes in DC, get yourself up to Baltimore and dance until sunrise at Deep Sugar. $12 members, $15 general admission.

Sunday July 13
So if you’ve made it to Sunday and you’re looking to dance on a rooftop in the sunshine, DC’s got you covered with two fantastic rooftop parties. Leonardo Lee’s regular party Sunglass Sundays is over on the Public Bar rooftop, and this Sunday they’s got a spectacular lineup including Kochi, DJ Meegs, Leonardo Lee, Darius Twin, Paul Geddes and special guest Scumfrog. This is going to be a road block, so get there early! Free until 5pm, then $10 after, although if you can show that you have liked the Sunglass Sundays Facebook page, they’ll give you a $5 discount. Check it out for a friends and family vibe.

Across the street from Sunglass Sundays on the Dirty Bar rooftop you’ll find the Sunday’s Rooftop World Cup Final Edition, with locals Gabucci vs. Hakob, Raffi vs. DJ Lisa Frank and Jubilee vs. Ramirez. If you’re looking for quality tunes on the rooftop, but don’t want to miss the World Cup Finals, this is your best best. They will be screening the match above the DJ booth, and they’ll have the TVs running inside. Make sure you get there for Jubilee vs. Ramirez for some of the best deep tunes you’ll hear all weekend.

You can check out the DC House Grooves show I did with Jubilee and Ramirez here:
If you’re up in Columbia Heights, check out Zeba Bar for Episode 24 of Christauff and Stylo’s Zeba Sunday Sessions. Quality tunes in the neighborhood from 6pm to 10 pm.

And finally for Sunday, check out the regular ESL Sundays night over at Eighteenth Street Lounge. As always, local legend Sam Burns will be at the controls in the Gold Room, with Mr Bonkerz playing disco classics in the Main Room, and The Metaphysical holding things down on the patio. No event page for this, but check out the Eighteenth Street Lounge Facebook page for more info.
And that just about wraps it up for this edition of the DC House Grooves weekend roundup… just one more bonus recommendation:
Monday July 14
Looking to decompress after your weekend, but can’t quite bring yourself to stay in? Motown on Mondays at Den of Thieves on H Street is rapidly becoming the place to be for the heads to catch up and compare notes on their weekend adventures, to a sound track of original Motown classics and remixes from DJs D-Mac, Jayclue, and Rusty B. No cover, 21+/
