DC House Grooves Top Picks of the Best Underground House and Electronic Music Events in Washington DC February 22 to February 25

Lots to cover this week, so let’s dive right in. As always, you’ll find links to my Top Picks for each day, Thursday through Sunday, towards the end of the post, but before I get to them, I’ll give you my highlights for the weekend. Thursday night, head to Eighteenth Street Loungfor Playlist with Jubilee Ramirez. Always your best bet for deep underground grooves and family vibes on a Thursday night.

Friday night brings the second edition of Ken Lazee and Nick Garcia‘s party Werk Ethic at U Street Music Hall, celebrating the very best of house and techno from the 80s and 90s. As a taster of what to expect, here’s Nick‘s recent contribution to the DC House Grooves Meet the Locals Podcast:

It’s free before 12pm, and just $5 after, so if you’re in the mood for some classic house and techno, look no further than U Street Music Hall!

Another great option for the heads on Friday is the second edition of Jett Chandon‘s  Forecast party at Ten Tigers Parlour. Billed as “for the locals, by the locals”, this one is really talking our language. Forecast 002 features new ROAM resident Jett ChandonTNX‘s Baronhawk and Arthur Kimskii, exploring “a range of sounds that stretch and break the foundation of music within our DC community”. Sounds tasty to me, and with no cover all night, the price is right.

On Saturday night, Flash is where the party’s at for fans of quality house music, with an epic line up on the club level featuring Osunlade, South Africa’s Culoe de Song and local support from Sticky Fingers Collective‘s Samantha Francesca. In the bar, DJ Soul and Chosen join forces for another edition of DUSK, and in the Green Room, it’s Navbox & Friends featuring special guests Mazi R and yours truly, Andy Grant. I’m honored to be part of this epic line up, and I can’t wait to throw down with my brother from another mother, Mazi R! Cancel all Sunday plans; it’s gonna get real! This one’s gonna be busy, so advanced tickets are highly recommended.

Those looking for the best techno beats either have to make a tough choice, or get ready to bounce a round a bit.  One amazing option is Sequence.209 featuring Henning BaerFaso, Theta FluxJuana  Ron Jackson and the other star of the show, the Grand Ancestor sound system. Tickets have been flying off the shelf for this one, but if you move fast, $16 second release tickets are still up for grabs.

Back to this weekend, and my recommendation for Sunday grooves is to head to  Eighteenth Street Lounge for Sam “The Man” Burns’ weekly residency, the man, the legend Smudge in the main room, and Good Buddies featuring The NeedleXchangePhilco on the patio. Three rooms of quality grooves to bring your weekend on the dance floor to a perfect close.

Those are my highlights for the week, but as always there’s plenty more to choose from. Here are the links to this week’s Top Picks. You know the drill; just click the link to see the list for each day.

DC House Grooves Top Picks of the Best Underground House and Electronic Music Events in Washington DC February 15 to February 18

Before getting into it this week, I want to give a big shout out to the students in Professor Molk’s The Art of DJing course at Georgetown University, who I had the privilege of delivering a lecture to this past Monday. While I had hoped to give a demonstration of the art of DJing with vinyl, equipment issues got in the way, so, despite my lost voice, I ended up talking for the full allotted time, hopefully imparting some of the wisdom I’ve gained on the art of DJing along the way. I had some well thought out questions thrown my way during the Q & A, and on the whole it was a very rewarding experience. I hope to see you guys out and about soon! Huge thanks to Professor Molk for inviting me.

OK, heads up: next Saturday, February 24, a couple of DC’s finest warehouse party crews are back, so make sure you choose wisely and grab your advanced tickets now.  First up, Sequence returns with Sequence.209 featuring Henning BaerFaso, Theta FluxJuana Ron Jackson and the other star of the show, the Grand Ancestor sound system. Tickets have been flying off the shelf for this one, but if you move fast, $16 second release tickets are still up for grabs.

Don’t even ask me to make a recommendation as to which one to go to. Both offer spectacular line ups, both are legit party crews with track records of throwing quality events, sound and crowd will be on point, you really can’t go wrong. It’s a testament to the healthy scene we’ve got going on here in this city that we have two events of this caliber happening the same night. Long may it continue!

Enough about next weekend… DC’s got some great events lined up for us today through Sunday. Highlights this weekend include Uncle Benny’s After Hours Express on Friday, featuring none other than Sistrum Recordings‘ Patrice Scott and support from  Samantha FrancescaBenoit, and using the link below, you can get 20% off your advanced tickets. One last thing before the full list of Top Picks for this week, episode #66 of the DC House Grooves Meet the Locals Podcast from a fixture on the Washington DC scene for many years, Rhythm & Culture label boss Thomas Blondet. DC House Grooves Top Picks of the Best Underground House & Electronic Music Events in Washington DC Thanksgiving Holiday Weekend November 22 to November 26

Out and about, I’d recommend kicking off the weekend tomorrow night at Give Thanks with Juan ZapataSamantha Francesca and Itzjack at Jimmy Valentine’s Lonely Hearts Club. Usually on Thanksgiving itself there aren’t any decent events to give you an excuse to get out of the house and avoid those post-Turkey blues, but this year you can head to Public Bar for Saeed Younan‘s Sintimate Rooftop Sessions with TechnasiaSaeed Younan and Alex Eljaiek. Rumor has it, they’ve got a sexy new disco ball lighting up the rooftop, so get dressed up in your best disco threads and get ready to throw some shapes. Advanced tickets are just $10.

Firiday night, head to Flash for the amazing Jan Krueger with support from N/UM & Solomon Sanchez, with Philip Goyette in the Green Room and Samantha Francesca and DSD in the Flash Bar. One of my favorite DC clubbing memories was hearing a mental set from Jan Krueger at Jimmy Valentine’s, as paint chips rained down from the ceiling onto the turntables. Good times. I can only imagine what Jan is going to do with  Flash‘s  amazing Funktion One system.

If you haven’t checked out the first release on M. Vaughan‘s Super Tuff!  label, I can highly recommend it, with great tracks from Jesse BruDJ AakmaelM. Vaughan and Moony Me, and with the super solid Super Tuff 002 just released, things are looking bright! Definitely an exciting label to keep an eye on, and I expect Super Tuff  at  Jimmy’s to deliver the goods. DC House Grooves Top Picks Labor Day Weekend August 31 to September 3

Fun times on the rooftop at Flash last Friday at Kochi‘s Vibe party! Always a pleasure throwing down wiith my fellow DC House Grooves residents Katrina Mir and Ramirez, and my man Kochi always brings the heat. All three floors at Flash were buzzing, and we had a magical crowd grooving in the Green Room all night, surrounded by the amazing artworks of Symmetrical. Check out the photo gallery of the night over on Facebook, and you can listen to the full recording here:

As always, massive thanks to Afshin, Daniel, Alex, Sam, Jackie, and everyone else on the team at Flash for making sure our nights there run so smoothly. It can get really crazy on busy nights like Friday, and it makes a real difference having such a great crew keeping things on track. Looking forward to the next time!

Before I get into this week’s Top Picks, a quick reminder about the Destination boat party on September 24 with the legendary Joaquin ‘Joe’ Claussell working his magic in a 4 hour set as you cruise down the Potomac. With several weeks to go, tickets are already on third release, so if you want to be on the boat, make sure you grab your tickets before they’re gone. You don’t want to miss this one!
