Almost out of time here, but a quick shout out to a couple of  other essential events this weekend. On Friday night, all roads lead to Flash for Back 2 Basics with house legend Lil’ Louis with support form Benoit, with OGs Joe L and LoveGrove in the Green Room  and  Jacq JillPhilco in the bar. One serious line up, top to bottom. Lil’ Louis has a real special place in house music history for me; I remember as if it were yesterday hearing Lil’ Louis‘ classic French Kiss for the first time in a club in St Tropez, France in the summer of 1989. It was like nothing I’d ever heard before, and it completely blew me away. Fast forward many years to Detroit in 2013, and DJ Tennis dropped it in his set at TV Lounge, and it had the very same effect. Simply incredible. DC is in for a treat this Friday when Lil Louis graces the decks at Flash, and no mistake. Dress to sweat! Kudos to Flash for the ridiculous quality of the house bookings lately. Keep them coming! Advanced tickets highly recommended.

Friday night brings the second edition of Ken Lazee and Nick Garcia‘s party Werk Ethic at U Street Music Hall, celebrating the very best of house and techno from the 80s and 90s. As a taster of what to expect, here’s Nick‘s recent contribution to the DC House Grooves Meet the Locals Podcast:

It’s free before 12pm, and just $5 after, so if you’re in the mood for some classic house and techno, look no further than U Street Music Hall!

Another great option for the heads on Friday is the second edition of Jett Chandon‘s  Forecast party at Ten Tigers Parlour. Billed as “for the locals, by the locals”, this one is really talking our language. Forecast 002 features new ROAM resident Jett ChandonTNX‘s Baronhawk and Arthur Kimskii, exploring “a range of sounds that stretch and break the foundation of music within our DC community”. Sounds tasty to me, and with no cover all night, the price is right.

On Saturday night, Flash is where the party’s at for fans of quality house music, with an epic line up on the club level featuring Osunlade, South Africa’s Culoe de Song and local support from Sticky Fingers Collective‘s Samantha Francesca. In the bar, DJ Soul and Chosen join forces for another edition of DUSK, and in the Green Room, it’s Navbox & Friends featuring special guests Mazi R and yours truly, Andy Grant. I’m honored to be part of this epic line up, and I can’t wait to throw down with my brother from another mother, Mazi R! Cancel all Sunday plans; it’s gonna get real! This one’s gonna be busy, so advanced tickets are highly recommended.

Back to this weekend, and my recommendation for Sunday grooves is to head to  Eighteenth Street Lounge for Sam “The Man” Burns’ weekly residency, the man, the legend Smudge in the main room, and Good Buddies featuring The NeedleXchangePhilco on the patio. Three rooms of quality grooves to bring your weekend on the dance floor to a perfect close.

Before getting into it this week, I want to give a big shout out to the students in Professor Molk’s The Art of DJing course at Georgetown University, who I had the privilege of delivering a lecture to this past Monday. While I had hoped to give a demonstration of the art of DJing with vinyl, equipment issues got in the way, so, despite my lost voice, I ended up talking for the full allotted time, hopefully imparting some of the wisdom I’ve gained on the art of DJing along the way. I had some well thought out questions thrown my way during the Q & A, and on the whole it was a very rewarding experience. I hope to see you guys out and about soon! Huge thanks to Professor Molk for inviting me.

OK, heads up: next Saturday, February 24, a couple of DC’s finest warehouse party crews are back, so make sure you choose wisely and grab your advanced tickets now.  First up, Sequence returns with Sequence.209 featuring Henning BaerFaso, Theta FluxJuana Ron Jackson and the other star of the show, the Grand Ancestor sound system. Don’t even ask me to make a recommendation as to which one to go to. Both offer spectacular line ups, both are legit party crews with track records of throwing quality events, sound and crowd will be on point, you really can’t go wrong. It’s a testament to the healthy scene we’ve got going on here in this city that we have two events of this caliber happening the same night. Long may it continue!

Enough about next weekend… DC’s got some great events lined up for us today through Sunday.
