DC House Grooves Top Picks of the Best Underground House and Electronic Music Events in Washington DC Pride Weekend June 7 to June 10

Huge thanks to everyone who braved the torrential rain last Sunday to join us on the rooftop at Public Bar for Beats Maneuver with Trinidadian Deep. Sadly, the weather was not in our favor, but we appreciate all you hardy souls who came out despite the rain and threw a few shapes with us on the dance floor. Here’s hoping the sun will shine on the next Beats Maneuver rooftop charity event at Public Bar with Miles MaedaKochi, Andy Grant  and Aaron Sparks on Sunday June 17.  Hope you can join us!

On Saturday night, we obviously hope to see you at Deep Sugar at U Street Music Hall, but if you want to get down away from the craziness of U Street on Pride weekend, I recommend Deeper with District Soul at Jimmy Valentine’s Lonely Hearts Club, which sees the legendary Johnson Lee dust off his headphones and get back into the DJ game, with the capable assistance of DJ Stereophonik, reminiscing to the halcyon days of the District Soul forums, once a thriving online hub of the Washington DC house music scene, where like minded individuals hung out, harmoniously discussing their shared love of house music. Those who were there know what I’m talking about 😉 There won’t be a microwave DJ in sight this Saturday at Jimmy’s, and with no cover, the price is right!

Whew! That’s all I’ve got time for this weekend. Too many amazing events, and not enough time to do them all justice. I hope between Tommy‘s DC Pride 2018 post and my post right here, we’ve given you enough ideas to keep you grooving through the weekend. I’ll be back next week with another edition of DC House Grooves Top Picks, featuring all the best underground house and electronic music events in and around Washington DC, Thursday through Sunday. See you on the dance floor!

DC PRIDE 2018

When I started doing these write-ups as DC House Groove’s Queer Correspondent, there was a real need for highlighting non-official, locally-sourced, music-forward events during MAL and Pride in our community. I’m not saying that’s no longer needed, but I don’t think I need to hold as many hands anymore. That’s not to say there isn’t room for improvement, but so many scenes seem to be really thriving right now in DC and people just seem to GET IT! And there really is something for everyone. If you wanna live your circuit fantasy, grab a fan and clack off at the eagle all weekend. Go see your favorite drag queen perform (she’s probably in town). Brunch and day drink at the parade. Catch amazing queer musicians at a live show. Lose yourself on the dance-floor to some incredible DJs- both local and traveling in. We’re all Options Queens this pride!

One thing that I’ve been seeing happen organically this year that makes me very, very happy is that so many great events are reclaiming the name DC Pride. Because of this and because so many of you reached out about it, I’m back with the listings this year. But I’m ditching the long-winded rant and cutting right to the chase. I’m also ditching the “underground pride” name. Oh, and I’ve never been about that capital, hen. This is all about DC Pride, baby*

On Sunday, I’d obviously love it if you came out to support us on the rooftop at Public Bar for the second edition of Beats Maneuver with Trinidadian Deep, but there are a few other great options. If I wasn’t busy with Beats Maneuver, I’d be sure to check out The House That U Built at El Techo with a classic THTUB all-star line up, including Sam BurnsThe Elders and Vanniety Kills, and I’d be sorely tempted to get myself a ticket to the Soundwaves Boat Party with NDATL‘s Kai Alcé and Benoit B2B Edo. DC House Grooves Top Picks of the Best Underground House and Electronic Music Events in Washington DC Memorial Day Weekend May 24 to May 27

Before I get into it this week, I want to give a big shout to the Sequence crew for a legit party up at the warehouse spot last Friday with Juana, Aurora HalalTheta FluxDJ Stingray and Associate. While I couldn’t stay too long, I was there early in the evening, and they filled that place up real quick with true heads, and I could tell it was going to be a really special evening. If well curated techno is your thing, keep an eye out for Sequence events; legit warehouse vibes for lovers of the real shit. Make sure you like the Sequence Facebook Page to be kept up to date with news of future Sequence events.

On to this weekend, and it’s a fairly quiet one here in DC, as many of our friends make the annual pilgrimage to Detroit for the Movement festival and all the associated shenanigans. If, like me, you can’t make it this year, don’t worry, while it’s a little quieter than usual, there’s still plenty to keep you dancing Thursday through Sunday, right here in DC.

The big news for DC House Grooves this weekend is the launch of our new event in partnership with Roots & SpiritsVibe and Public BarBeats Maneuver. We’ve assembled an incredible line up for a 13 hour rooftop extravaganza from 3pm right through to 4am, featuring World Peace Music‘s Gigi Testa, with support from KayLaSoulAndrew HogansRamirezKochiAndy Grant (that’s me!) & Katrina Mir. There’s no work on Monday, so no excuses! The perfect opportunity to cut loose and groove out Sunday afternoon into Monday morning. Cover is just $5 from 3pm to 6pm, then just $10 after, and we’ll be donating a portion of the proceeds to Friends of Puerto Rico, so you’ll be getting down for a great cause. We’ve also got limited number of $5 early birds available over at Resident Advisor, so if you plan on coming late, but only want to pay $5, grab yours now!

To celebrate the launch of Beats ManeuverDC House Grooves is giving away three spots on the guest list to one lucky winner, so if you want to be on the list + 2 for Sunday, enter our free prize draw! Remember to leave your real name and email address, as we’ll need to contact you to let you know you’ve won, and you’ll need to show your ID to claim your prize. When you fill out the form, you can also subscribe to the DC House Grooves  mailing list. We promise not to spam you; we’ll just send you the occasional email letting you know what’s coming up from DC House Grooves.

I want to be on the guest list +2 for Beats Maneuver with Gigi Testa

We hope you can join us on Sunday for what promises to be the start of something special. We’ve got dates scheduled through to the end of the summer, featuring great out of town and local talent, so join us on Sunday and be there from the start. To all DJs and promoters who I’ve supported over the years through DC House Grooves, why not return the favor and lend a bit of support to DC House Grooves? Would be great to hang out, have a few beers and get down to some quality house music!
