Fun times last Thursday at Cadence! Katrina Mir and I had a super fun time throwing down in the Green Room at Flash for the Cadence crew alongside Sinestro & Simon. Thank you to everyone who came out to support, and thank you to the Cadence crew for inviting us to play! Other than that, we had a fairly quiet weekend, staying in on Saturday night for the DC House Grooves Show on Underground Quality Radio with me, Katrina Mir and Ramirez. This show was a bit of a struggle at first, taking us a while to find our groove, but once we got into the swing of things the vibes started flowing. Check out the archive stream below and judge for yourself.
We’ll be back with the next DC House Grooves Show on Saturday February 3 at 10pm ET. Full details in next week’s post.
Here are the links for this week’s Top Picks, Thursday through Sunday. Some great events this weekend, so make sure you take the time to click through and take a look, and select Going for any events you plan on attending.
You can catch me and Katrina Mir broadcasting live from One Love Massive HQwith Wade Hammes, Jon Weller and O. Martinez on the latest edition of One Love Massive Factory Floor Sessions: NighFlight. Can’t wait to throw down with the Nightflight crew. Tune in from 6pm on the One Love Massive Facebook Page or One Love Massive YouTube page.
After we wrap up at One Love Massive, we’re heading over to the warehouse for L.E.N.G. and INN(er)NET present Durban to DC with Gqom King DJ Lag and support from Jessicunt, DJ Underdog, DJ Native Sun, L’Enfant, Benbo & Panch. Excited to hear some fresh sounds from one of South Africa’s finest on the amazing Grand Ancestor sound system. Advanced tickets highly recommended!
Saturday night, all roads lead back to the spot for Late Night Mischief, Early Morning Love, with Mazi R, Andy Grant, Katrina Mir & Team Zapata. The party kicks off at 11pm and goes until sunrise. Quality underground vibes from a killer all-local lineup. Cover is $10 before 2am, $20 after. Katrina Mir and myself will be rocking the joint around 1am to 3am, so don’t come too late!
Finally, I want to give a shout to my man Benoit, Uncle Benny himself, who’ll be holding down the patio at Eighteenth Street Lounge open to close for Sundays Rooftop, while Sam Burns and Smudge take care of business in the Gold and Main rooms. Always the best place to round out your weekend, ESL is the right move this Sunday.
OK – that’s it for this week. I hope I see you on the dance floor for Late Night Mischief, Early Morning Love on Saturday. Otherwise, no doubt I’ll run into you on the dance floor soon. I’ll be back net week, same time, same place, with news of all the best underground house and electronic music events in and around Washington DC, Thursday through Sunday.
Super fun times at Church of Secrets with Alton Miller last Friday! Playing in a former church was definitely a first for me, and I had a blast getting things warmed up on the dance floor. Despite some minor imperial entanglements, a good time was had by all, with the enthusiastic crowd grooving well into Saturday. I hear there may be another opportunity to worship in the Church of Secrets in the not too distant future. I’ll bring you the details as soon as I know more.

OK, before getting into this week’s events, news of a couple of upcoming events you need to know about. On Saturday October 21, I’ll be joining Charles Martin and Alex Eljaiek for a locals take over of the Club Level at Flash for another edition of Resident Nights, while the always reliable Taiga and Throe join forces for the latest installment of Arts & Sciences. As I’m always saying, locals do it better, and I can’t thank Flash enough for supporting local talent, allowing us to take the reins for the night. Can’t wait to give that amazing Funktion One sound system a proper workout alongside two of DC’s finest. Hope to see you on the floor!
The following Saturday, October 28, there’s a whole host of Halloween themed parties to choose from, but the pick of the bunch for quality tunes and the best costumes in town is Jimmy Valentine’s Annual Halloween Bash, with a smoking hot line up including Kochi, our very own Katrina Mir, Lyssa, DJ Ramirez, Tim Jackson and Jandro. If you’ve not done Jimmy‘s for Halloween before, you need to know that costumes are required, and let me tell you, people make a real effort each year! General admission tickets are $15, or for just $70 you can get top shelf open bar all night long! It doesn’t get much better than that. This party sells out every year, often well in advance, so if you’re planning on going, don’t waste any time. Grab your tickets now!
OK, back to more pressing matters. What’s on deck to get your feet tappin’ this weekend? As usual, an amazing line up of Top Picks, which you’ll find listed below. Of special interest this weekend, my old friend Marc Cotterell, head honcho of the amazing house and garage label Plastik People Records flies into town this weekend for a couple of gigs and a radio show. I first got to know Marc when we were both residents of the soulful house radio station Planetsoul Network in the early 2000s, back when I was based in Edinburgh, Scotland, and Marc was based in southwest England. Indeed, the flyer below from October 13 2005 is perhaps the last time Marc and I shared the same billing, just after I moved from Scotland to Washington, DC, and on Friday night, October 13, we’ll be at it again, exactly 12 years to the day from our last radio show. It must be a sign!
Marc will be joining me and Katrina Mir Friday night for Body Werk in the Flash Bar, as part of Focus with with Tobias., Ryan Elliot, Moscoman & TNX‘s Bil Todd. Another amazing line up at Flash for what’s sure to be an amazing Friday night, and remember, there’s no cover to join us in the Flash Bar.
Then on Saturday night, Marc joins me Katrina Mir and Ramirez as our first special guest on the DC House Grooves Show on Jus-Ed‘s Underground Quality Radio. The show kicks off at 10pm ET, and whether you’re going out or staying in, we’ve got the perfect sound track for your Saturday night.
Sunday night, Marc wraps up his DC weekender joining Benoit on the patio at Eighteenth Street Lounge for Sundays Rooftop, as part of an amazing lineup forESL on Sunday, which also includes the man, the legend Sam “The Man” Burns with special guest Vanniety Kills, with Smudge rounding out the line up in the main room.
Other highlights for this weekend include my weekly pick Playlist with Jubilee & Ramirez at Eighteenth Street Lounge on Thursday, Nocturnal Emissions with Tummettott, Hakob, markintheDark & Jubilee ata secret warehouse location on Friday, then on Saturday, Prescription &Kowli celebrate Ebi‘s birthday with an amazing line up including Detroit legend Rick Wade and local support from Baronhawk, Feroun and Jus Nowhere.
Also on Saturday night, Martín Miguel‘s excellent record label Better Listen Records celebrates one year of operation and their latest release Feels Trip to the District by thatmanmonkz on the patio at Eighteenth Street Lounge, with Martín and thatmanmonkz providing the sound track. Highly recommended!
Another big highlight for Saturday is the final edition of Pacific Fur Company‘s Natural Resources before Eli heads west at Studio Ga Ga. Joining PFC for this final bash is an illustrious list of local talent, including Philip Goyette, Throe, DJ Eli Cash, James CC & Mike Harvey. I’m sure there’ll be tears of joy and sadness on the dance floor as Natural Resources bids a fond farewell to the District.
One more event I want to highlight before getting into my full list of Top Picks for the weekend. On Sunday, local legend Saeed Younan kicks off a new series of events on the rooftop at Public Bar, Sintimate Rooftop Sessions, showcasing Younan Music talent. Sunday’s line up features Pirupa & Saeed Younan, with support from Mina & Darius Twin. With a great crowd and quality music, the rooftop at Public is always a blast, and I’m looking forward to seeing what Saeed has lined up for the future. Door tax is $15, with $10 early birds available.
Congratulations if you’ve made it this far! Here are all my Top Picks of the best underground house and electronic music events in and around DC Thursday through Sunday. Having a few issues with formatting the Top Pick logo since a recent WordPress update, but rest assured, everything in the list below is a DC House Grooves Top Pick! Hope to see you out and about!
Thursday October 12
Playlist with Jubilee & Ramirez at Eighteenth Street Lounge
Fun times last weekend! Huge thanks to everyone who came out to Flash on Friday to hear me open for Navbox and Sonja Moonear, and to Flash for putting their trust in me to set the vibe for the night just right. I was expecting the usual slow pick up, but to my surprise the dance floor filled up quicker than I’ve ever seen before! I’d like to take the credit, but it was really down to people being out early to celebrate Cinco de Mayo. Certainly one one of my favorite sets behind the decks at Flash, and when I was done, Navbox and Sonja Moonear really took things to the next level! On Saturday night, I headed over to Be What You Feel with Fred Everything, Youandewan & Reggie Dokes, with support from Hot Coffee and Team Zapata, Sadly Reggie Dokes couldn’t make it due to a family emergency, but DJ Aakmael stepped in as a worthy replacement. Vibes were thick all night, and the Prescription sound system was sounding super sweet. Another great event from the Prescription and Sticky Fingers crews! Next up for the Sticky Fingers Collective is Daytime Discotèque with Frits Wentink on May 21. $15 advanced tickets still available if you move fast!
The big news announced over the past week is the tenth anniversary of the FORWARD Festival. FORWARD Everlasting takes place between May 17 and May 21, and features a full range of diverse events celebrating electronic music and culture. You can find full information aboutFORWARD Everlasting over at the FORWARD DC Website and the FORWARD DC Facebook Page, but for easy reference I have included the full list of events below. I strongly encourage all DC House Grooves readers to make an effort to attend some (or all!) FORWARD Everlasting events. Here’s to another ten years celebrating electronic music and culture here in Washington DC!
FORWARD Everlasting Wednesday May 17:
Forward Presents: Heidi Sabertooth, Motiv-A, Swan Meat, Juana at Bump’n’Grind
Another amazing event in DC next weekend is the next one from the ROAM crew, ROAM XI: Matrixxman, DJ Lisa Frank, Chris Nitti, Sami, Rush Plus & Outputmessage at a warehouse location in DC. An official Movement pre-party, this one’s sure to be a proper techno workout. At the time of writing, first release advanced tickets are still available for $15 from RA .
Another incredible line up of parties in my Top Picks Thursday through Sunday this week. I’ll be slinging wax in Petworth with Trev-ski and Katrina Mir at Petworth Funk if you’re looking for something low key on Friday, but if you’re up for some serious warehouse action, make sure you check out Flash‘s new warehouse experience Flash Off, featuring Magda, Mike Servito and Onur Özer with local support, from Flash‘s very own Navbox, Jubilee, Oliver Caine, Rush Plus and Juana. Throw in an immersive four point Funktion One sound system and visuals by Oktaform, and you’ve got all the ingredients for an amazing sensory experience! Advanced tickets are now $35, more on the door.
Saturday night sees DC House Grooves favorite Eddie C make a triumphant return to Eighteenth Street Lounge, just two weeks after his recent appearance in Baltimore. Highly recommended for anyone who wants to witness a masterful DJ working some serious magic. i can guarantee the patio at ESL will be jumping on Saturday night!
Also worth checking out on Saturday is Fathom Experiment #3: Find the 11th Dimension with Ashwin Khosa, Mayssam, Raina Sokolov-Gonzalez, Dap the Contract and Nebo, along with a solid list of artists exhibiting their work, including DC House Grooves favorite Symmetrical. Fathom Experiment #3 is at L2 Lounge in Georgetown, and advanced tickets are available for $35 from Eventbrite.
On Sunday, my recommendation for a proper dance floor work out is Sunday Love at Flash, featuring Detroit favorite Omar S with local support from Benoit, Samantha Francesca & Tommy Cornelis. Omar S always brings the heat when he comes to DC, and with that line up supporting him, you can’t go wrong.
Here’s this week’s full listings from Thursday through Sunday, including all my Top Picks. Hope I run into some of you out and about this weekend!
Thursday May 11
