Seems like every week I write that I’ve no time to write a decent post, but this week I really mean it! Just back from Romania, heading to Berlin tonight, so I’m gonna have to make this quick. Wish I had more time to give all the cool stuff the coverage it deserves, but this week you’ll just have to make so with my Top Picks list. Having said that, please make an effort to head to Eighteenth Street Lounge on Thursday to wish the Playlist crew a very happy second anniversary. Two years of quality deep vibes on the patio at ESL from my brothers Jubilee & Ramirez. This Thursday, Kochi and Neko Narko will be joining them to celebrate, and I strongly recommend you do too!
Friday night, you’re spoiled for choice, with Derrick Carter at Flash and Eddie C at Eighteenth Street Lounge, but the really big news on Friday is ROAM XIV, with the ROAM crew celebrating their 4 year anniversary with Detroit legend Robert Hood (Underground Resistance / Floorplan) and local legend Buster, with support from residents DJ Lisa Frank & Sami. You heard that right: Robert Hood, after hours, warehouse. It has been amazing watching ROAM grow in just four years from a small house party to Washington DC’s premier warehouse event, and I can’t wait to see what the future brings. This could well be the best ROAM yet, possibly the party of the year here in DC. All the smart kids have grabbed their tix already, but third release are still up for grabs for $25. Space will be limited, so if you want to celebrate 4 years of ROAM on Friday night, plan ahead and grab your tickets now!
If you’ve still got something left in the tank on Saturday, the welcome news is Prescription are back at it after a long hiatus, and this time around they’re doing it right with a quality all-local line up, including Yola(Grand Ancestor), Ron Jackson(Sequence), Solomon Sanchez (Flash), Jubilee(Playlist), and of course the mighty Juan Z(Prescription), all in a new location. The party kicks off at 10pm and carries on until sunrise and perhaps beyond. DC House Grooves readers can get a 15% discountusing this link, and if you move fast, $15 early bird tickets are still available. It’s gonna be a good one! As I’m always saying here on DC House Grooves, locals do it better!
Sunday, close out your weekend at Eighteenth Street Lounge with Sam “The Man” Burns, Keenan Orr and Sundays Rooftop withBenoit and special guest, all the way from Paris, Varoslav (Rue De Plaisance). The perfect way to wrap another amazing weekend on the dance floor here in theDistrict.
Here’s my full list of DC House Grooves Top Picks for the weekend. Sadly I won’t be here to enjoy it all with you, but I’m sure I’ll make do in Berlin 😉 Remember, it’s not a sprint, it’s a marathon, and if you can’t be good, be careful. See you back here next week, same time, same place, for full details on all the best underground house and electronic music events in and around Washington DC, Thursday through Sunday.
Thursday November 2
Playlist 2nd Anniversary with Solomon Sanchez, Neko Narko, Jubilee & Ramirez at Eighteenth Street Lounge
Welcome to a very special Halloween edition of DC House Grooves Top Picks! Why so special, you ask? Well, it’s special because I’m filing this week’s edition from Cluj-Napoca, capital of Transylvania, which I’m visiting on day job biz. The fact that I’ve even found the time to do it when I’m not even going to be around for any of these events makes it kinda special! I’ve just got a few minutes for a quick post before I head out into the Transylvanian night (a lot less exciting than it sounds), so let’s make this count. If you read last week’s DC House Grooves Top Picks Halloween Preview 2017, then you already know about all the good stuff and have no doubt already bought your tickets, but this post right here also includes full details of all the other good stuff happening over Halloween weekend. Sadly, the planned Church of Freaks party on Friday night has been canceled due to events outside of the promoter’s control, but there’s still plenty more events to choose from to get your freak on this weekend. On Friday, I recommend checking out Foundation Fridays at Flash, then sticking around for Detroit Swindle with Martín Miguel, with The Ghost in the Green Room and Silicon Based Lifeform featuring Discwoman‘s Juana, Ron Jackson, Doctor D & Darius Twin in the Flash Bar. For afters, head to Nomads Only DC‘s warehouse event featuring Maxi Stores, Navbox, Edo & Taiga. Early bird tix are still available for just $10 if you move fast.
Also on Friday, for all you heads needing your Deep Sugar fix after last week’s Haunted Beach House event, there’s a Deep Sugar pop up after hours at Factory 17 in Baltimore on Friday with the girl squad Ultra Naté & Lisa Moody. You know it makes sense!
Saturday night, my Top Pick for a freaky fun time is to head to Jimmy Valentine’s Annual Halloween Bash with Kochi, DJ Ramirez, Lyssa, Katrina Mir, Tim Jackson & Jandro at Jimmy Valentine’s Lonely Hearts Club. This annual costume mandatory party is always a crazy night… just make sure you’ve got your costume sorted! Advanced tickets are just $15, or if you’re up for a boozy do, it’s just $70 for top shelf open bar all night long! Best deal in town if you’re planning on really going for it!
If you’re up for a full on warehouse experience Saturday night, DC has you covered! Flash & Loop are celebrating Halloween with two of Detroit’s finest, Delano Smith & Stacey Pullen, with some of DC’s finest in support: Navbox, Solomon Sanchez, Alex Eljaiek & Mina. Anyone who’s been to one of Flash & Loop‘s Halloween extravangazas knows that they pull out all the stops for a fully themed experience. Proper sound, great vibes. If that sounds like your cup of tea, grab your tix using the link below.
Sequence are also celebrating Halloween on Saturday with Sequence.666 featuring Phase Fatale, Arthur Kimskii, Lyceum & Juana at a warehouse location. You know you’re in for a spooky good time with the Sequence crew, with all the true heads assembled. Advanced tickets strongly recommended…check the link below.
My last highlight for Saturday night is for those of you who can’t face the warehouse party crowds and want to get away from it all with some proper house party vibes. If that sounds like you, then seek out off the record Halloween with Luv Jam, Dj Nav & Samantha Francesca. I’d like to tell you more, but it’s, ya know, off the record. Seriously, though, Luv Jam! Nippy vibes until the sun comes up.
Sunday’s highlights include Sundays Rooftop with Detroit’s Punisher & Benoit, on the patio at Eighteenth Street Lounge, while Sam Burns and Baltimore legend Teddy Douglas hold things down in the gold room, and the second edition of Saeed Younan‘s new party at Public Bar, Sintimate Rooftop Sessions Halloween Edition with Cocodrills, Bell & J Tek & Sami%Suyung at Public Bar. Both great options for closing out an incredible Halloween weekend!
Below you’ll find my full list of DC House GroovesTop Picks for Halloween weekend, along with event flyers, event links and ticket links where appropriate. Before getting into that, though, here’s the full recording from last Saturday’s Resident Nights at Flash with Charles Martin, Andy Grant, Alex Eljaiek and Oliver Caine, which had to be one of the best nights I’ve ever had at Flash Huge thanks to everyone who came out, to Navid for inviting us to play, and to everyone on the team at Flash for making everything run smoothly on the night. You guys rock! Already looking forward to next time 🙂
OK, here’s all my Top Picks for the weekend, Thursday through Sunday. Time to make some tough choices! Come back next week, same time, same place, for full info on all the best underground house and electronic music events Thursday through Sunday. DC House Grooves has all the good stuff!
Thursday October 26
ESL Thursday with John Jazz & Playlist with Lyssa, Ramirez & Kaylasoul at Eighteenth Street Lounge
Super fun times at Church of Secrets with Alton Miller last Friday! Playing in a former church was definitely a first for me, and I had a blast getting things warmed up on the dance floor. Despite some minor imperial entanglements, a good time was had by all, with the enthusiastic crowd grooving well into Saturday. I hear there may be another opportunity to worship in the Church of Secrets in the not too distant future. I’ll bring you the details as soon as I know more.

OK, before getting into this week’s events, news of a couple of upcoming events you need to know about. On Saturday October 21, I’ll be joining Charles Martin and Alex Eljaiek for a locals take over of the Club Level at Flash for another edition of Resident Nights, while the always reliable Taiga and Throe join forces for the latest installment of Arts & Sciences. As I’m always saying, locals do it better, and I can’t thank Flash enough for supporting local talent, allowing us to take the reins for the night. Can’t wait to give that amazing Funktion One sound system a proper workout alongside two of DC’s finest. Hope to see you on the floor!
The following Saturday, October 28, there’s a whole host of Halloween themed parties to choose from, but the pick of the bunch for quality tunes and the best costumes in town is Jimmy Valentine’s Annual Halloween Bash, with a smoking hot line up including Kochi, our very own Katrina Mir, Lyssa, DJ Ramirez, Tim Jackson and Jandro. If you’ve not done Jimmy‘s for Halloween before, you need to know that costumes are required, and let me tell you, people make a real effort each year! General admission tickets are $15, or for just $70 you can get top shelf open bar all night long! It doesn’t get much better than that. This party sells out every year, often well in advance, so if you’re planning on going, don’t waste any time. Grab your tickets now!
OK, back to more pressing matters. What’s on deck to get your feet tappin’ this weekend? As usual, an amazing line up of Top Picks, which you’ll find listed below. Of special interest this weekend, my old friend Marc Cotterell, head honcho of the amazing house and garage label Plastik People Records flies into town this weekend for a couple of gigs and a radio show. I first got to know Marc when we were both residents of the soulful house radio station Planetsoul Network in the early 2000s, back when I was based in Edinburgh, Scotland, and Marc was based in southwest England. Indeed, the flyer below from October 13 2005 is perhaps the last time Marc and I shared the same billing, just after I moved from Scotland to Washington, DC, and on Friday night, October 13, we’ll be at it again, exactly 12 years to the day from our last radio show. It must be a sign!
Marc will be joining me and Katrina Mir Friday night for Body Werk in the Flash Bar, as part of Focus with with Tobias., Ryan Elliot, Moscoman & TNX‘s Bil Todd. Another amazing line up at Flash for what’s sure to be an amazing Friday night, and remember, there’s no cover to join us in the Flash Bar.
Then on Saturday night, Marc joins me Katrina Mir and Ramirez as our first special guest on the DC House Grooves Show on Jus-Ed‘s Underground Quality Radio. The show kicks off at 10pm ET, and whether you’re going out or staying in, we’ve got the perfect sound track for your Saturday night.
Sunday night, Marc wraps up his DC weekender joining Benoit on the patio at Eighteenth Street Lounge for Sundays Rooftop, as part of an amazing lineup forESL on Sunday, which also includes the man, the legend Sam “The Man” Burns with special guest Vanniety Kills, with Smudge rounding out the line up in the main room.
Other highlights for this weekend include my weekly pick Playlist with Jubilee & Ramirez at Eighteenth Street Lounge on Thursday, Nocturnal Emissions with Tummettott, Hakob, markintheDark & Jubilee ata secret warehouse location on Friday, then on Saturday, Prescription &Kowli celebrate Ebi‘s birthday with an amazing line up including Detroit legend Rick Wade and local support from Baronhawk, Feroun and Jus Nowhere.
Also on Saturday night, Martín Miguel‘s excellent record label Better Listen Records celebrates one year of operation and their latest release Feels Trip to the District by thatmanmonkz on the patio at Eighteenth Street Lounge, with Martín and thatmanmonkz providing the sound track. Highly recommended!
Another big highlight for Saturday is the final edition of Pacific Fur Company‘s Natural Resources before Eli heads west at Studio Ga Ga. Joining PFC for this final bash is an illustrious list of local talent, including Philip Goyette, Throe, DJ Eli Cash, James CC & Mike Harvey. I’m sure there’ll be tears of joy and sadness on the dance floor as Natural Resources bids a fond farewell to the District.
One more event I want to highlight before getting into my full list of Top Picks for the weekend. On Sunday, local legend Saeed Younan kicks off a new series of events on the rooftop at Public Bar, Sintimate Rooftop Sessions, showcasing Younan Music talent. Sunday’s line up features Pirupa & Saeed Younan, with support from Mina & Darius Twin. With a great crowd and quality music, the rooftop at Public is always a blast, and I’m looking forward to seeing what Saeed has lined up for the future. Door tax is $15, with $10 early birds available.
Congratulations if you’ve made it this far! Here are all my Top Picks of the best underground house and electronic music events in and around DC Thursday through Sunday. Having a few issues with formatting the Top Pick logo since a recent WordPress update, but rest assured, everything in the list below is a DC House Grooves Top Pick! Hope to see you out and about!
Thursday October 12
Playlist with Jubilee & Ramirez at Eighteenth Street Lounge
Wow! That was my reaction last Thursday night seeing the crowd on the patio at Eighteenth Street Lounge for Playlist. What an amazing vibe! Huge thanks to everyone who came out to groove with us on the patio, to the team at ESL for helping everything run smoothly, and, of course, to my brothers Jubilee & Ramirez for inviting me to throw down with them. It was awesome running into a few DC House Grooves readers in the crowd, too! Great to meet you all, and hope to see you again soon. I don’t think I’m exaggerating saying Playlist is currently the best weekly event in DC featuring local talent. Congratulations to the Slope Traxx boys for what they’ve built over the last couple of years. Here’s to many more amazing nights on the patio! They will, of course, be at it again Thursday night, and for this week’s edition, Flash‘s Navbox joins Jubilee & Ramirez for another excursion through all things deep. Not to be missed!

Saturday night we were at it again on another edition of the DC House Grooves Show on Underground Quality Radio. Fun times in the Rave Basement with two of the best DJs I know, Ramirez and Katrina Mir. See below for the video recording of last week’s show, and we’ll be back at it again on October 14 with Plastik People‘s Marc Cotterell joining us as our special guest. Check out next week’s post for details.
OK OK OK what’s up with this weekend? You’re spoiled for choice on Thursday, with Playlist at Eighteenth Street Lounge, while across town at Flash the Preview crew are going late night with an all start local line up including Christauff, Dreadbang, Jon_MFD, Meegs, Rich Thomas, Rosenberg & Thursday People, and it’s all for a very worthy cause as all proceeds from the event will be donated to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Looks like another great night on the rooftop at Flash!
Also on Thursday, U Street Music Hall kicks off their new series of events at Ten Tigers Parlour with the mighty Ben UFO headlining with local support from the 1432R crew. Advanced tickets are just $15, which is a bargain for such high caliber talent. U Street Music Hall has already announced Denis Ferrer at Ten Tigers Parlour on December 1, and I can’t wait to see who else they’ve got lined up for this exciting event series.
Friday night is all about Church of Secrets with Detroit legend Alton Miller supported by Andy Grant (that’s me if you didn’t realize), Benoit & HOT COFFEE at a super secret location. Hours of worship are Midnight until the early hours of Saturday, and I can guarantee we’ll be raising our hands to the heavens and singing Hallelujah many times before the night is out. Early bird tickets are just $10, so grab yours now before the price goes up! Gonna be a really special night at the Church of Secrets.
Saturday night brings another edition of ROAM vs TNX, with a stellar line up featuring Dekmantel‘s Palms Trax & Honey Sound System with local support from ROAM and TNX residents Sami, Lisa Frank, Tommy Cornelis, Bil Todd & Baronhawk, making the magic happen through Team Zapata‘s most excellent Martin Audio sound system in another amazing warehouse location.
For a taste of what to expect, check out Palms Trax‘s recently announced release on Giles Smith and James Priestley‘s Secretsundaze imprint, which premiered on Mixmag‘s SoundCloud page just yesterday:
If you’re up for something a bit more intimate without a cover charge on Saturday, then head over to Jimmy Valentine’s Lonely Hearts Club for Alive & Well with Sarah Myers, Philip Goyette, C Felinski & Philco. A fantastic local lineup at everyone’s favorite dive bar with a Martin Audio sound system. If this crew doesn’t get you grooving, I don’t know what will.
For Sunday afternoon grooves, look no further than the Sunday Love closing party at Flash with Bedouin, Edo, Marko Peli, Meegs, Narko & Navbox. Sad to see Sunday Love wrap its first season, especially as I didn’t get a chance to play there this year, but already looking forward to next season. Make sure you head to Flash on Sunday afternoon to catch the season closer. Advanced tickets are all sold out, but there should be some available on the door as capacity allows.
Also happening early evening on Sunday is the inaugural Headroom Sunday Party at Ten Tigers Parlour, featuring a line up of talented artists who have showcased their sounds at Chadwicks‘s monthlyHeadroom event at Flash. The event kicks off at 5pm with a line up including Analog Tara, Darius Twin, District & Circle, DJ Winterman, JP Jed, Nebo, Sid Waters & Symmetrical. There’s no cover, but donations at the door are strongly encouraged. Starving artists gotta eat! Please make the effort to come out and support DC’s thriving community of electronic music artists. These cats are gonna go far!
Sunday night wraps up with perhaps the highlight of the weekend, with Deep Secrets & The Stars in association with Lil Soso Productions presents Let Me Show You Love, a fundraiser for the Hurricane Maria relief effort featuring New York disco legend Danny Krivit, with local support from Adrian Loving and TNX‘s Tommy Cornelis. A long list of local crews are partnering to bring you this event: DC House Grooves, Good Buddies, Prescription, Nomads Only, Chosen, Mont.age, Loop, Sticky Fingers Collective, Deep Sugar & Kowli. With such an amazing list of party crews involved, you know this one’s going to be really special! Early bird tickets are still available for $10, so move fast before the price goes up. I couldn’t think of a better way to close out the weekend while raising funds for a great cause. Proceeds will be donated to Unicef‘s hurricane relief efforts in Puerto Rico, with 90% of every dollar raised going directly to children.
UPDATE : Let me Show You Love has been cancelled
Enough chat for this week. I’m exhausted writing about it, and now I gotta go out and do it! When I look out at the dance floor from the booth at Church of Secrets on Friday, I hope to see your smiling faces present and correct on the dance floor. Make sure you come and say hi! Here’s my full list of picks for the weekend, along with flyers and info links. Come back next week for the lowdown on all the good shit going down in DC. See you on the dance floor!
Thursday October 5
