DC House Grooves Top Picks of the Best Underground House and Electronic Music Events in Washington DC June 14 to June 17

Just about recovered from another amazing weekend on the dance floor right here in the District, excited for the next one! Katrina Mir and I had an amazing time at U Street Music Hall on Saturday with the Deep Sugar crew, throwing down a set of pure disco bliss to get the party started. Wayne DavisLisa Moody and our very own local super star Ultra Naté, fresh off the plane from Ibiza, all brought their A games; the energy in that room was incredible! We may not have The Paradox anymore, but the legendary Deep Sugar magic is still intact. The high point of the evening was a live PA from house diva Dawn Tallman, and wow, did she deliver! Don’t take my word for it, check out the video below.

Huge thanks to Ultra for inviting me and Katrina to open the night, and to the whole Deep Sugar crew for their warmth, energy and professionalism, contributing to an amazing night for everyone! The next Deep Sugar is Lisa Moody‘s birthday celebration at Baltimore Sound Stage on June 30, with Ultra NatéLisa MoodyWayne DavisThe Elders (miss you guys!), Michael Joyner and a live performance from Michelle Weeks. Mark it in your calendar and get your ass to Baltimore on June 30!

So what am I so excited about for this weekend? Well apart from all the amazing events happening Thursday through Saturday (more on those soon), we’ve got the third edition of our Sunday rooftop charity event Beats Maneuver this Sunday, featuring none other that former  Smartbar resident Miles Maeda with support from Beats Maneuver residents yours truly Andy GrantKochi and local special guest Aaron Sparks. The weather was not our friend for the last Beats Maneuver with Trinidadian Deep at Public Bar, but the forecast for Sunday is looking like sunshine all day long, so join us on the rooftop at Public for a pure house music workout in the sunshine to close out your weekend. If you find DC House Grooves a useful resource, if I’ve supported your events on these here pages, why not return the favor and come out and support Beats Maneuver? As always, we’ll donating a portion of the proceeds to charity, so it’s a great time for a great cause. We’re only charging $5 cover for this one, a great deal for a line up of this caliber. Please RSVP on the event page, and we’ll see you on the rooftop this Sunday!

If what you’ve got in mind for Friday is the opposite of an intimate music session at Jimmys, then I’ve got just the thing for you. While I don’t usually include event at Echostage on these page, because let’s face it, they hardly quality as underground, I’ll make an exception for this Friday, as none other that the man, the legend, Carl Cox will be gracing the stage for an extended set with support from local hero Saeed YounanCarl Cox was resident at the first club I attended regularly back in the late eighties, the Zap Club in Brighton, England, and it’s amazing to see how far he’s come. $40 advanced tickets are still available, grab yours now.

Now I know you’re all coming out to support us at Beats Maneuver with Miles Maeda at  Public Bar on Sunday, but if you just want to kick back and listen to tunes in a social media free setting, I recommend checking out U Street Music Hall‘s new regular Sunday listening event The Universal Listening Room. Tunes from all genres from Will Eastman and guest selectors, played in their entirety, all night long. A great concept, which I hope will be a great success.

Damn… I’m running out of time, and I’ve still got so much to cover! I’m gutted I couldn’t make it out last weekend, missing ROAM Hosts Resolute. I predicted this one would be something really special, and from what I hear, it lived up to my expectations! I’d hoped to persuade someone to write a review of the night for me to include in this week’s post, but nothing was forthcoming. Let’s just say that I saw the party described by highly trusted heads as “legendary”, “best one yet”, “perfect night”, “Fking great time”… I could go on. ROAM‘s parties go from strength to strength, and I can’t wait to see what they’ve got in store for us in 2017. Watch this space for details!

So what’s on deck for this weekend? Before getting into that, this week I’m introducing the new DC House Grooves Top Pick logo, designed by none other than Graham Jackson, the design genius behind many of the best flyers and logos you’ll see in these pages each week.

DC House Grooves Top Pick

If you see the DC House Grooves Top Pick logo next to an event, or posted in an event page on Facebook, it tells you that event is worth your time. How are picks selected? We use a complex algorithm, developed over many years by top behavioral scientists at MIT, which evaluates multiple facets of each event to determine the level of satisfaction a true connoisseur of the underground is likely to derive, on aggregate. Actually, that’s bullshit. I assign the DC House Grooves Top Pick badge to events that I think look cool, that represent the DC scene well, that support local underground DJs, that are thrown by passionate heads who’s hearts are in the right place, events that will attract the right crowd, and where you’ll hear quality underground grooves, get down and dirty and dance all night with your bass face on. So, if you see the DC House Grooves Top Pick logo next to an event, check it out! Please don’t be offended if you don’t see the Top Pick logo next to your event, or an event you know is really cool. I may just not be familiar with the promoter, the DJs or the venue, or it may be a style of music that doesn’t really fall within the remit of DC House Grooves. If you think an event deserves the Top Pick designation, reach out to me through the DC House Grooves Facebook page and make your case!

Plenty of top picks to choose from this week, too. I’m happy to announce that my six week DJ gig drought is finally over; you can catch me behind the decks on Thursday night at Pitch Control at Dr Clock’s Nowhere Bar, alongside my favorite DJ Katrina Mir and Tim Humphrey. We’ll be serving up underground sounds fresh from the vinyl open till close, while Dr Clock himself serves up the spacey cocktails.

Then on Friday night, I’ll be joining Katrina Mir again open to close in the Green Room at Flash for another edition of Body Werk, while Andhim and Philip Goyette bring the heat in the main room, and DJ Meegs joins Protean in the bar for another edition of Cider House Mules. Serious business across three floors!

DC House Grooves Weekend Round Up: The Best Underground House and Electronic Music Events in Washington DC March 9 to March 12

Kicking off this week’s Weekend Round Up with news of Flash‘s new rooftop Sunday party Sunday Love, which kicks off this weekend in the Green Room with a killer lineup featuring a live set from Christian Löffler, supported by local dream team Solomon SanchezSarah Myers and Chris Nitti. It ain’t just spring that’s kicking off early this year; rooftop party season is getting a head start too! I reached out to the good people at Flash to find out a bit more about Sunday Love, and here’s the deal: Sunday Love is a new series of all day parties on Flash‘s rooftop (The Green Room) which will feature a line up of locals followed by a sunset set from a big name headliner. It aims to showcase smaller acts that you’d traditionally see on the club level at Flash on Fridays and Saturdays, providing a platform to up and coming artists operating more on the fringes of dance music. Kudos to Flash for taking steps to bring interesting and innovative artists to DC, whilst also supporting our strong local talent. I can’t wait to see what Sunday Love brings over the summer months. Here are the events announced so far:

March 12: Sunday Love: Christian Löffler with Solomon Sanchez, Sarah Myers and Chris Nitti

Sadly nothing new on the Meet the Locals Podcast front this week. I guess I need to get out there and start stalking people for contributions. Who wants to contribute episode #47? Get in touch and send me a mix! One DJ I’ve been hoping will contribute to the Meet the Locals series is Partial Magic‘s Ben Jenkins. No luck just yet, so as a consolation, here’s a recent mix he did for someone else. You know when a mix comes out guns blazing with Norm Talley‘s Beats on Broadway that you’re in for a wild ride, and this is one mix that delivers on it’s early promise; an hour of proper underground house music with a track list to die for. Can’t wait to hear Ben‘s mix for DC House Grooves (hint hint!)
