Saturday night, we’re at it again with episode #52 of the DC House Grooves Show on Underground Quality Radio with me, Andy Grant, Ramirez and Katrina Mir. A whole bunch of new wax has landed at DC House Grooves HQ lately; looking forward to taking it for a spin on Saturday! Tune in from 10pm ET on the Underground Quality LiveYouTube channel, or at www.undergroundquality.com.
Some great events to choose from on Saturday night, but the hottest ticket in town has to be Jeff Mills at the Apollo 50 Festival after party at the W Washington DC. RSVP for a chance to grab a ticket. Not exactly sure how they are allocated, but give it a shot!
Sunday night, head to Eighteenth Street Lounge for Sam Burns‘ weekly residency and 10 Years of Deep Secrets with Sistrum label boss Patrice Scott.
Whatever you end up this weekend, it’s gonna be a super hot one in more ways than one, so drink lots of water and stay hydrated! It’s going to be another amazing weekend on the dance floor here in Washington DC! See you on the dance floor.
Flash Line Up July 18 to July 21
Eighteenth Street Lounge Line Up July 18 to July 21
Just a quick post this week due to an unplanned trip to London. No time to compile a full list of events, so just a few quick recommendations. Before all that, did you catch Katrina Mir‘s recent podcast for Daisychain? Check it out below: a solid hour of techno served up fresh from the vinyl.
Thursday night, head to Playlist with Jubilee and Ramirez at Eighteenth Street Lounge for quality house music from two of our finest locals. Then on Friday, head straight back to Eighteenth Street Lounge for the first of three events celebrating 10 Years of Deep Secrets with Detroit legend Rick Wilhite delivering a proper dance floor spanking in theGold Room. Rick Wilhite performed our favorite set of the weekend atthe People of Earth / Deep Crates event at Motor City Wine on our recent trip to Detroit, so miss this one at your peril. Serious disco house techno funk, and whatever the fuck else Rick wants to play, for serious heads. Leave any prejudices at the door and be ready to dance! And if that’s not enough, 4 Hours of Funk with Graham and Fleg take over the patio. Serious business at ESL this Friday night.
For late night warehouse kink-techno action on Friday, Sprüdel is back with a line up featuring Young Male, Motive-A and Tommy Cornelis. Advance tickets required.
Saturday night, Navbox and Friends at Flash with Navbox, Jay Prouty and special guests promises to be another great night across three floors, then on Sunday head to Sunday Love at Flash early, then head over the Eighteenth Street Lounge later for Sam Burns, Keenan Orr and Good Buddies with Seth Magoon and Philco. Wherever you end up, if you’re there on the recommendation of DC House Grooves, make sure you let people know! Word of mouth goes a long way 🙂
I’ve included a couple of galleries below with the weekend line ups for Flash and Eighteenth Street Lounge. Plenty of solid underground house and techno between the two to keep you dancing all weekend. I’m sure next week’s post will be another quick one, but some seriously good stuff to look forward to, with Jenifa Mayanja and Katrina Mir in the Green Room at Flash on Friday, and Patrice Scott with me, Andy Grant B2B Ramirez and Benoit on support. It’s gonna be a big weekend!
Happy 4th of July! This week we’re not only celebrating the 243rd anniversary of the good old US of A, we’re also celebrating the 5 year anniversary of DC House Grooves Top Picks. It has been five years since my first post listing all the good stuff happening on the dance floor here in Washington DC, and I have published a post pretty much each and every week since that first post. While technically DC House Grooves is 15 years old (I registered dchousegrooves.com and launched the website when I first arrived on these shores from the UK in 2004),the first DC House Grooves Top Picks post was published on July 3rd, 2014. I started publishing these posts because I wanted to give something back to the Washington DC electronic music community, and I figured it would be a good way to support cool events when I couldn’t always be there in person. I also wanted to document all the cool stuff happening here in DC, and hopefully help steer people towards events showcasing our incredible local talent. Help put Washington DC on the international electronic music community map, as it were. I’ve had my ups and downs over the years, sometimes loving what I do, other times questioning why I do it, sometimes feeling the love, other times feeling taken for granted. I’ve changed up the format multiple times to try and cover as much as I can in as little time as possible as the underground scene has continued to grow, but ultimately it has just become something I do, and I guess I’ll keep doing it until the time comes to stop. Thank you for reading and supporting!
So what did I cover in that first post? Quite a bit, as it happens! Lost on Thursdays with the ROAM crew, Philip Goyette’s Beats on Repeat, Soundwaves Boat Party with Juan Zapata, Jubilee & Raffi, a Back in the Day bash with Ray Casil, Distrikt, Matthew Dekay, Bedouin and an all-local Flash of July celebration at Flash, ROAM IV, The House that U Built with TNX and Keenan, and of course ESL Sunday with Sam Burns, Farid and Juan. Some serious good times right there! A lot has changed over the past five years, but a whole lot has stayed the same 🙂 Check out the gallery below with all the flyers for July 4th weekend, 2014.
Before I get into all the amazing events happening over July 4th weekend 2019, a quick heads up about our homies Deep Secrets‘ upcoming 10 year anniversary, for which they’ve assembled an incredible line up featuring Rick Wilhite, Patrice Scott and Joaquin “Joe” Claussell across three nights at Eighteenth Street Lounge. You can catch me, Andy Grant, playing a very special B2B set with my brother from another mother Ramirez warming up the floor for Patrice Scott on Sunday July 21st. I hope to see you all there on the dance floor! Ticket links below; see flyer for the full line up.
One more thing before this week’s list: a new Meet the Locals Podcast from recent arrival in Washington DC all the way from Australia, Stu Kelly. Some great tunes to listen to while you’re figuring out your dance floor strategy for the holiday weekend:
OK, see below for the full list of Top Picks for the holiday weekend, Wednesday through Sunday. It’s a family affair at Jimmy Valentine’s on Wednesday night, with Team Zapata, Samantha Francesca, Hot Coffee and Joe L at the controls until the early morning, then on the 4th, escape your family and head to Flash for Flashworks, featuring quality beats all day and all night, kicking off a long weekend line up that featuring Ryan Elliott, Julia Govor David Waxman, Sandra Collins, Holmar, Jake the Rapper and a whole list of local talent including our very own Katrina Mir and brothers DJ Kochi and DJ Mate Masie at Vibe in the Flash Bar on Friday night.
Other highlights include Playlist with Jubilee & Ramirez at Eighteenth Street Lounge on Thurdsday, Werk Ethic with Ken Lazee & Nick Garcia at U Street Music Hall and Deep Sugar Rooftop Jam (if you can find a ticket!), then Late Night Mischief for the late night grooves on Saturday, and of course Eighteenth Street Lounge on Sunday with Sam Burns and Hold Tight with Dino Soccio and Martín Miguel.
Well that wraps it up for our five year anniversary special 4th of July holiday edition of DC House Grooves Top Picks. I can’t commit to another five years, but you never know. There’s a good change I’ll be back with another post next week, so check back same time next week for info on all the best underground house and techno events in Washington DC, Thursday through Sunday.
Fun times at Late Night Mischief on Saturday! I haven’t dance that much since Rick Wilhite kicked my ass in Detroit a few weeks back. DJ Nav set the vibe just right with a quality early set, then Aakmael delivered the goods with a solid 4 hour set of proper house music, with our very own Katrina Mir taking things up a notch keeping us grooving until sunrise with a seriously banging set. Always a good time with at Late Night Mischief! Huge thanks to the Sticky Fingers Collective & Team Zapata for inviting Katrina Mir to play, and for being such amazing hosts. Can’t wait until the next one.
You can catch Katrina Mir alongside me, Andy Grant and Ramirez on Episode #51 of the DC House Grooves Show on Underground Quality Radio this Friday June 28 at 10pm ET. Tune in for another quality show featuring quality underground house music served up fresh from the wax. We’ll be putting the brand new Technics 1200 Mk7 turntables through their paces for the first time on Saturdays show. Can’t wait to take them for a spin!
Another quality line up of events this weekend in and around the District. Playlist with Jubilee and Ramirez is the best way to kick off your weekend with quality house music on the patio at Eighteenth Street Lounge on Thursday, then on Friday, after listening to the DC House Grooves Show to get you in the mood, I recommend Sequence.820_Headless Horseman, where the Sequence crew will be rocking a new two room spot with an amazing line up including Headless Horseman live, Jacq Jill, Juana and Damon Bradley in the main room, and Theta Flux live, Ben Jenkins and Associate in the Isolated Paradise ambient room. Advance tickets are recommended, but tickets are available on the door with RSVP.
Plenty of great choices for Saturday night. If you’re in the U Street area, I recommend checking out Symmetrical‘s Fractal Love 3 party at El Techo, which runs from 12pm to 1.30am with an amazing line up of locals to keep you grooving all afternoon and into the night. Looks like a lot of fun!
Sunday brings another edition of Sunday Love at Flash with Acid Pauli and a long list of locals, then on Sunday night all roads lead to Eighteenth Street Lounge for Sam Burns‘ weekly residency, Smudge and Good Buddies with Feroun and Philco.
See below for my full list of DC House Grooves Top Picks, Thursday through Sunday. Make sure you tune into the DC House Grooves Show Episode #051 on Saturday at 10pm, and check back here next week for a very special July 4 holiday edition of DC House Grooves Top Picks, celebrating 5 years of weekly posts featuring all the best underground house music and techno events in and around Washington DC.
