Super fun times at U Street Music Hall last Friday opening up for Rush Plus and Anthony Naples. Massive thanks to the U Street Music Hall crew for inviting us to play. Some great events going down at U Hall lately, and super grateful to play a small part. We also had a great time getting down at Jimmy Valentine’s Lonely Hearts Club at Uncle Benny‘s 35th birthday celebrations with Detroit’s Daniel Andres. Always a fun time at Jimmy‘s, and Benoit and Daniel were bringing it big time! I’ve got to give a big shout to the Sequence crew for another great event at the warehouse. Always a packed house at Sequence parties, and this one was no exception. Sadly I couldn’t stay as long as I wanted to due to a Saturday afternoon gig with the Elevate Rooftop Pool Party crew, but then that got postponed due to rain, so I should have stayed! Looking forward to the Sequence year two anniversary party with Adam X and R.Rose!
OK, before I get into this weekend in Washington DC, if any of our readers are in Boston this Friday, make sure you check out Roots & Spirits presents El Yunque Puerto Rico fund raiser with Ramirez & DashRok at Bella Luna Restaurant & Milky Way Lounge. That’s right! Our good friend, DC House Grooves Show resident Ramirez is taking things on the road to Boston this Friday, raising funds for Puerto Rico. For real house music in Boston from one of my favorite DJs this Friday, look no further than El Yunque.

Right, back to DC, and this weekend is all about the launch of the Grand Ancestor 2.0 Sound System. It’s Yola‘s 29th birthday, and to celebrate, the Grand Ancestor crew are launching their brand new sound system (more about that later) with not one, but two massive celebrations of the finest reggae and dub the nation’s capital has ever seen. DC House Grooves is getting in on the celebrations by giving away a pair of tickets to both the Friday night event AND the Saturday night event. For a chance to win, just click through to the entry form, enter your email address and full name and submit the form. We’ll pick one winner on Friday afternoon then another on Saturday afternoon, so there’s two chances to win! Please make sure you enter your correct email address and name, as we’ll need to email you to let you know you’ve won, and you’ll need your ID to claim your prize on the door.
So what’s on the menu for the Grand Ancestor 2.0 launch? Friday brings and Innamind Recordings Takeover with Karma, Ago, Headland, Kurks and Grand Ancestor featuring MC Husky, all delivered over the brand new Grand Ancestor 2.0 sound system. This one’s gonna go until sunrise (and perhaps beyond), and it’s just $10 before 2am, $20 after.

Then on Saturday night, it’s back to the same spot for part 2 of the celebrations, with . Downbeat the Ruler, Tony Screw the Gold Finger, Johnny Go Figure and of course Grand Ancestor with MC Husky. Another fine line up to get the stacks singing just right! I know I tend to focus on underground house and techno on DC House Grooves, but this is the music the Grand Ancestor sound system was built for, and you really need to experience it to understand! Whether you go Friday or Saturday, make sure you make time for Grand Ancestor this weekend.

Not sure what to expect from Grand Ancestor? Then check out the promo videos for their latest release, GA 013, plus the promos for GA 012 and GA 011. Each one a quality release! GA 013 is currently available from the Grand Ancestor Record Shop, and while GA 012 is sold out pretty much everyone, there are a few copies left at the Grand Ancestor Record Shop if you move fast. Don’t sleep! Proper reggae business from a home grown Washington DC record label!
OK, so you’re going to one (or both) of the Grand Ancestor 2.0 events on Friday or Saturday, but what else is happening this weekend? As usual, I’ve compiled all the best underground events over on the DC House Grooves Facebook Page, and you can see the list for each day by clicking the links below. All my Top Picks for each day, just a click away!
Sadly I’m out of time, but I’ll quickly mention a few more highlights for the weekend: Playlist with Karina and Jubilee at Eighteenth Street Lounge on Thursday and Summer Heat with Sam Burns, DJ Double 07 and Anish at Jimmy Valentine’s on Friday are solid picks, and come highly recommended!
Then on Saturday, kick things off at Sunset & Chill at the Olde City Farm, and then head up at Flash for the Distrikt of Columbia fundraiser, or for some proper techno head to Jimmy’s for Blueprint featuring Monix, Steve Kirn and Ron Jackson.
Sunday, I recommend Sunday Love with Quantic for quality rooftop vibes. That’s it for this weekend, hope to see you all a the Grand Ancestor 2.0 celebrations, and of course I’ll be back here, same time, same place, next weekend with info on all the best underground house and electronic music events in and around Washington DC, Thursday through Sunday. Oh, and did I mention next week we’ll be giving away a pair of tickets to the next soon to be sold out ROAM on a Boat on August 5? Come back next week for a chance to win!
