Super fun time going B2B with my better half Katrina Mir in the Green Room at Flash on Friday. As usual, the rooftop was pretty much empty early on, but on the stroke of midnight the dance floor filled up and stayed that way until the music stopped. Huge thanks to the team at Flash for looking after us. We had a blast! You can check out the recording of the night over on the DC House Grooves SoundCloud Page. We stuck to the minimal grooves to start, but then things got interesting!
No gigs for me this weekend; I’ll be too busy on the dance floor celebrating my birthday! However, you can catch Katrina Mir spinning an all vinyl set at Playlist at Eighteenth Street Lounge on Thursday, alongside resident Ramirez, performing a rare extended set.
New Meet the Locals podcast this weekend, from relative newcomer to the DC electronic music community, Uzef. This one delivers 90 minutes of dreamy tech house groovers, taking some interesting turns along the way.
You can catch Uzef next at District Drop Inn on Friday May 11.
Ok, here’s my Top Picks for this weekend. Just click or tap the link for each day to see the full list of Top Picks for that day:
Right… need to wrap this up quick so I can get on with the business of celebrating my birthday! Yeah, Happy Birthday to me. Way older that I care to admit, and struggling to rationalize my actual age with how old I feel. Definitely old enough to know better, but not prepared to grow up just yet. But I digress. Some big things happening this weekend, and I figured I’d give a shout out to the events where you might just catch me throwing a few shapes in defiance of middle age.
First up, DC’s current go-to rooftop El Techo will be celebrating Cinco de Mayo weekend and the opening up of their rooftop deck with DJs all weekend, Friday through Sunday. Reading like a who’s who of the local electronic music community, you can be sure of great music at El Techo all weekend long. Check the event page below for full details, and be prepared to wait in line for your spot on the rooftop.
Friday night, I’ll be kicking off the night at Flash supporting my brothers Kochi and markinthedark at Vibe in the Flash Bar, and will be sure to make some moves on the club level with Rush Plus and the Green Room with Steve Kirn and Mike Harvey.
Later on, I’ll be heading to everyone’s favorite secret location for Love Notes with Love Notes from Brooklyn label boss Nathaniel Jay celebrating the release of LVNO-14, Sidewinder by Derek Carr, with support from DJ Nav and Joe L, all delivering the goods on the mighty Grand Ancestor Sound System. With something like 50 years of DJ experience between them, these cats are guaranteed to make you move. I’m designating this my official birthday celebration, so if you want to celebrate with me, or maybe give me that super special birthday gift, you know where to find me!
Saturday night, I’ll be scooping myself up off the couch to head back to the warehouse to support my brother from another mother Ramirez & Team Zapata at Late Night Mischief, Early Morning Love. With these OGs at the controls, you know you’re gonna get a proper dance floor workout. Two nights of musical bliss with the Grand Ancestor Sound System! Can’t wait.
Saturday night also brings another edition of Resident Nights at Flash, where the club is turned over, top to bottom, to our talented local DJs. On the club level, Sarah Myers, Mazi R and markinthedark will be at the controls, while Edo and Charles Martin work the Green Room, and down in the bar, Roukin and Friends features Roukin, Donnerstag, The Barber Streisand and Raptorstein. Quality on all three floors. Locals do it better!
Sadly I don’t think I’ll make it to Baltimore on Saturday, but I gotta give a shout to my Deep Sugar family, who are back at it with the after hours action at Factory 17, with a line up featuring Ultra Naté, Lisa Moody, and an opening set from Jordan Pope. If you’re in Baltimore, look no further for real house music and vibes for days!
Sunday, I’ll no doubt be taking it easy, but between The House that U Built at El Techo, Sunday Love with Monolink, DJ Meegs and Tim Glusko at Flash and ESL Sunday with Sam The Man Burns, The Metaphysical and Hold Tight with Martín Miguel & Heights, I’m sure you’ll find somewhere to lose yourself in the music.
That’s everything for this week. Don’t forget to check the Top Picks links… plenty of other great events that I just don’t have time to write about. I’ll be back next week, same time, same place, with news and info on all the best underground house and electronic music events in and around Washington DC, Thursday through Sunday. See you on the dance floor!
