DC House Grooves Weekend Round Up: The Best Underground House and Electronic Music Events in Washington DC January 15 – January 18

Welcome back to another edition of the Weekly Roundup. We’re still buzzing from an amazing night of music with a bunch of true heads at Petworth Funk last Friday, where MeistroDJ NavAlex GardelTrev-ski and Andy Grant were dropping vinyl bombs all night long to an audience of true heads. It really was a special evening, and the musical range and turntable expertise on display was something else. If you’ve not checked out Petworth Funk before, we encourage you to head up there some time. Trev-ski carefully curates the lineup each month, bringing in the finest vinyl selectors from DC and Baltimore, so you can be sure you’ll head some amazing tunes. Best of all, there’s never any cover, and there’s always a great vibe. Unfortunately, no Petworth Funk this week, but plenty of great events to keep you dancing in and around DC. So without further ado, let’s dig into our picks for this week. If you’re lucky enough to have MLK day off work, you’ve got plenty of opportunities to really cut loose and put in some serious werk on the dance floor. If you plan on attending something, please click through to the Facebook event page and click Join to let your friends know you’re going.

Thursday Picks

Lost on Thursdays January House Culinary with Charles Martin and Marko Peli at Lost Society

Our top pick for Thursday is yet again Lost on Thursdays at Lost Society. This week, the Lost crew present the January House Culinary with two of our favorite local selectors Charles Martin and Marko Peli. These guys really know what’s what when it comes to quality music, and you can sure they’ll be serving up a delicious feast of juicy house jams to keep the Lost rooftop jumping from open to close. Expect a friends and family vibe, all the usual drinks specials, and if they’re true to form, a glass of free champagne for the ladies before midnight. No cover, 21+.

Māṃsa: Rabit and Tripletrain at Tropicalia

If eclectic bass music and forward thinking club sounds are more your thing, then head head to Tropicalia for Māṃsa with a packed lineup including Rabit and Tripletrain making their DC debuts, with local support from Tsurugi and Poser (Panch b2b Djoser). The bass is going to sound great on the Tropicalia system, so you’re in for a treat. If bass music is your thing, this is the place to be on Thursday night. Advanced tickets are $8 from Brown Paper Tickets, or its $10 on the door. 21+.

The Vinyl District Presents: Sol Power All Stars DJ’s Stylus and Meistro at Den of Thieves

Our final pick for Thursday night is The Vinyl District Presents: Sol Power All Stars DJ’s Stylus and Meistro at Den of Thieves. As mentioned at the beginning of this post, we heard Meistro play an amazing set at Petworth Funk last Thursday, so we won’t hesitate to recommend this. To sum it up, “A Sol Power set is a joyous, sweaty affair that takes the dancefloor across continents of rhythms, feeling like a Cuban barrio, a beach in Rio and a disco in Lagos all at once.” Sounds like a treat, and we love that it will be an all vinyl set. The event page doesn’t mention cover, so we assume there isn’t any.

Activate at Zeba Bar

DC House Grooves is all about supporting the local scene, so its great to see a locals night at our favorite neighborhood dance floor, Zeba Bar. Our top pick for Friday is Activate, which returns to Zeba for the winter season with a great lineup of locals including Philip Goyette, Jackson Ryland, Jus Nowhere, Remote CTRL and Martín Miguel.  Expect quality house music open to close with no cover or dress code, and if you’re in the mood for a bite to eat, get there early and try the chicken kabob. Livio & Roby & Navbox at Flash with Composite in the Flash Bar

Down at Flash on Friday night, Romanian duo Livio & Robi are headlining the main room with support from top local selector Navbox, while local techno collective Composite take over the Flash Bar, with a solid local lineup including Currier, Boss Ross and Measax. Groove laden tech house up on the main floor, serious techno for the heads in the Flash Bar. Seems like a solid recipe for a great night out. Advanced tickets are $8 from Ticketfly, otherwise it is free before 11pm, $12 after. If you just want to get down with the Composite crew in the Flash Bar, there’s no cover.

dubathonic Live at Dr. Clock’s Nowhere Bar

Our next pick for Friday is the monthly dubathonic Live night at Dr. Clock’s Nowhere Bar. We get our fill of DJs in DC, but get ready for some real talent on Friday, as dubathonic brings hardware instruments and and live guitar to the booth for a night of live, original house, techno and sympathetic dance grooves, all in the intimate setting of Dr. Clocks. We’re planning on stopping by Friday night to support some truly original music. 21+, no cover.

Vague Output After Party – Eric Cloutier (The Bunker Brooklyn) at Secret Warehouse Location, Baltimore

And last, but by no means least, up in Baltimore there’s another edition of the Vague Output After Party with special guest, influential underground selector Eric Cloutier all the way from Berlin, with local support from Vague Output residents Alex Gardel and A’phreaq, all in a secret warehouse location. Great to see some proper warehouse action going down in Baltimore. We had the pleasure of playing with Alex at Petworth Funk last Friday, and he’s one of the true heads. Worth attending for his set alone. The party kicks off at midnight, and it’s $10 with RSVP at http://goo.gl/forms/tkBlIuPkH6, $15 without RSVP.

Safehouse with Pacific Fur Company & Ron Jackson at Dr. Clock’s Nowhere Bar

A great choice for quality, obscure house and techno on Saturday night is Safehouse at Dr. Clock’s Nowhere Bar with Pacific Fur Company and Ron Jackson. These cats are passionate about what they do, and you’ll find fine house, techno, disco and everything in between in a no bullshit environment. No cover, 21+.

TSOB – The Soul of Baltimore (SF-SJ Reunion) at The Club House, Baltimore

For a proper underground soulful house party on Saturday night, check out TSOB – The Soul of Baltimore (SF-SJ Reunion) with DJs Jay Rags and Oji. Billed as a new dance movement in a new dance space, this could be a chance to be there at the start of something special. Looks like they’ve got a great space lined up for the event, so should be high on your list if you’re in Baltimore, and worth the trip up from DC.

  1. No mention of the DMV’s first and longest running(8 and a half years) Sunday Soul Music Dance Party “Daylight”? happening this Sunday January18th from 7p – 1:30a in Georgetown Harbour at Gypsy Sallys, 3401 K St. NW. Premium Open Bar between 7:30 – 8:30. Special Guest Baltimore’s DJ Biskit. Check “Daylight DC Family” on FB for the ticket link and additional information.

    • We didn’t mention this event because we didn’t know about it. We rely on promoters to tell us about their events. We’ve searched Facebook, but can’t find any details about the event, other than the Daylight DC Family closed group, which we cannot view. Please send us the flyer and event page link and we would be happy to include it. In future, please let us know about any events you think should be included. Thanks!
