DC House Grooves Weekend Round Up: The Best Underground House and Electronic Music Events in Washington DC November 20 – November 23

Welcome back to another edition of the DC House Grooves Weekend Round Up, featuring all the best underground house and electronic music events in and around DC for the coming weekend. We’re amazed that this is our 20th edition. Didn’t expect to get beyond one or two, but i guess it keeps us out of trouble. We keep hoping for a quiet weekend so there’s less work compiling the listings and writing it all up, but each week the clubs and promoters of DC keep upping the ante and piling on more amazing events, so doesn’t look like that’s going to happen any time soon. This weekend in particular is looking ridiculous. So much to do. With that in mind, we’re going to skip the usual summary of last weekend and dive straight into the picks for this weekend, followed by the full listings for Thursday through Sunday. Before we dive in though, here’s the recording of Christauff’s DeepTech.fm show featuring Andy Grant from last week; the official sound track to this week’s round up!

Thursday Picks

Top pick for Thursday is our regular pick Lost on Thursdays, who continue their Movember November theme with another great party up on the rooftop at Lost Society. This week’s visiting guest is Mary Yuzovskaya, supported by locals Tirzah, making her Lost debut, and Alex Magdelano on live drums. Always a great crowd at Lost Society! Expect all the usual drinks specials. No cover, 21+.

Our next pick for Thursday is Fusion Thursdays at Treehouse Lounge. This time around, it’s a house and breaks edition, with DJ Daryl Northrop, DJ Rick Next Door and DJ Ramsey Neville. Should be a fun night with a varied musical selection. No cover, 21+, and there’s plenty of parking, so no worries there.

https://www.facebook.com/events/792280320810957

Another party that might be worth your time is Kickin’ Off at Bossa in Adams Morgan. It’s a new deep house night with Shahid Buttar and friends. This week’s guest is Keith Miller, and they’ll even have someone working the mic and a live VJ set thrown into the mix. Worth checking out if you’re in the area.

https://www.facebook.com/events/360150017476460/

Our final pick for Thursday is a little outside our remit, but deserves a mention. Gryphon After Dark hosted by Candice Mills is a new weekly night from our friends at One Love Massive, and is described as “Imagine jazz singer meets piano bar, meets cabaret, meets DC 2014”. So if you’re looking for something a little bit classy, or you want to grab a late dinner and check out some fine live entertainment, this is definitely worth a look. Believe me, with the weekend you’ve got coming, this sounds like the perfect way to start.

Friday Picks

Friday is when things really start getting interesting. Our top pick for Friday is [CENSORED]. That’s all we can tell you. All we can say is keep your eyes open and your ears to the ground when you’re out on Friday, and hopefully you’ll find your way there. We’re really excited about this one, and we’ll be there throwing major shapes on the dance floor all night long.

“So, what else is on, besides this mystery party that you probably just made up to sound cool”, you ask? Well first up, we recommend you get your evening started at the Technetium happy hour at Zeba Bar from 6pm to 10pm, with DJs Synz, Sequoia and Meegs, who will be fresh from recording her forthcoming podcast for DC House Grooves.  There’s always a great vibe at Zeba, and with great tunes in the mix, it will be a great place to start your night.

https://www.facebook.com/events/747264598680337/

Next up, we recommend you get yourself down to Flash for the legendary Dubtribe Sound System, supported by the dream team local lineup of Juan Zapata and Chadwick. But that’s not all, because down in the Flash Bar, there’s another edition of Ladies of the Underground, with another great all-female local lineup curated by our good friend Vanniety Kills. This time the lineup includes Agent137, DJ Cassidy, Eau Claire, and of course Vanniety Kills herself. There’s no cover for entry to the Flash Bar,  and advanced tickets for the main floor at $12, more on the door. You can grab your advanced tickets on Ticketfly.

https://www.facebook.com/events/336549863189655/

https://www.facebook.com/events/1711516322407376

If you’re not in the mood for the Flash crowds on Friday, we recommend you check out Degenerate with Darius Twin and Ron Jackson. The party is at a secret location in North East, so you’ll need to head over to the event page and RSVP to get the low down. While we haven’t yet made it to one of their events, we can tell the Degenerate crew are passionate about what they do, and we continue to be impressed by the creativity of their flyers, so we encourage you to stop by on Friday and check it out.

https://www.facebook.com/events/1494080004200902

Our next pick for Friday night if you’re in Baltimore, or fancy a small road trip, is 4 Hours of Funk with Graham & Fleg at The Windup Space in Baltimore. These guys are true heads, so this is the place to be if you want to expand your musical horizons and hear vinyl rarities that you won’t hear anywhere else. Free before 11, $5 after. 18+.

https://www.facebook.com/events/1499922300263221/

Before we move on to Saturday, just a couple of other quick drive by picks. There’s a new party promising some housey doings called 1/2Wayhouse at Safari Restaurant & Lounge in Petworth on Friday. We checked out the venue last week, and it shows some promise, so this could be a good bet if you want to stay in the neighborhood.

https://www.facebook.com/events/1570635863169625/

And last, but not least, if you’re down on the U Street corridor and want to party for a good cause, stop by Backbar for Stache Bash with Eau Claire, Amber Dyson, Caleb L’Etoile and Philco. Its $5 on the door for an intimate night of house and nu disco, with all proceeds being donated to the Movember Foundation. Get your groove on for a good cause!

Saturday Picks

So enough of the appetizers, let’s move on to the main course. Saturday brings a borderline stupid lineup of events, all of which deserve your attention. Our top pick for Saturday night is Flash Resident’s Night, where an amazing line up of locals will be taking over the main floor and the Flash Bar from open to close. Up on the main floor, Edo, Philip Goyette and Navbox will be at the controls. These guys really know how to rock a dance floor, and we’re really excited to hear them work the Funktion Ones all night long. Down in the Flash Bar, its a Body Werk takeover, with our very own Andy Grant and Raffi (Loop | DC) laying down thick deep house vibes all night long. We couldn’t be more excited about bringing our party to the Flash Bar, and we hope to see you all there! There is no cover for the Flash Bar, and advanced tickets for the main floor are $7, more on the door. You can grab your advanced tickets over on Ticketfly.

https://www.facebook.com/events/1556476817922348

Our next pick for Saturday is the Bump ‘n Grind 1 Year Anniversary & Thanksgiving Food Drive with Aaron Sparks, Boss Ross and David at Zeba Bar. We can’t believe it has been a year since the first Bump’n’Grind party, and this is a great local line up to celebrate their one year anniversary. The BnG parties at Zeba are always family affairs, with smiling dancers and baby powder on the dance floor, so this comes with our strong recommendation. While we’ll have our hands full at Flash, we’re hoping to at least make it up to Zeba for a little bit of family time. There’s no cover, but please bring canned food donations for the Bump’n’Grind canned food drive.

Bliss: Will Eastman, Jus Nowhere & DJ Nav at U Street Music Hall

Over at U Street Music Hall, Saturday night brings another installment of Will Eastman‘s monthly Bliss party. This month, Will’s guests are local artist and DJ Jus Nowhere of local label Silence in Metropolis, and our good friend, DJ Nav, who has been on a roll recently with a string of great house releases. A solid bet if you’re planning on a night out on U Street. The party kicks off at 10pm, $10 cover, 18+.

https://www.facebook.com/events/1563483807222042

Sarah Myers 5+ hour extended set at Lost Society

Another great pick if you’re in the U Street area is Lost Society, where local rising star Sarah Myers will be behind the decks open to close, doing some planning for her contribution to the DC House Grooves Meet the Locals podcast series :p. Well maybe not, but we really, really want a podcast from Sarah! This is a great opportunity to hear Sarah take you on a musical journey, all while celebrating her sister, Elizabeth’s birthday. No cover, 21+.

https://www.facebook.com/events/1506106616338688/

Happy Birthday Teddy Douglas feat Crystal Waters and Jasper St. Co. and Basement Boys Reunion at The Paradox, Baltimore

Our final pick for Saturday, and where we’ll all be heading once we wrap up at Flash, is Happy Birthday Teddy Douglas at The Paradox in Baltimore, with Crystal Waters, The Jasper Street Company and The Basement Boys reunion. Honestly, this is a dream line up of classic house artists, with music by Teddy Douglas, DJ Spen, Karizma, Thommy David, DJ Tanz, DJ Bizkit, DJ Kenny K and the legendary Wayne Davis. This type of event doesn’t come along very often, so when something like this happens, you’ve got to jump on it! Individually, these DJs would be worth the price of admission alone… all of them on the same night? Damn! Advanced tickets are $20, more on the door. May sound steep, but your money will be well spent.

Sunday Picks

If you’re still standing after Saturday night, there are a few options for Sunday. Our top pick for Sunday is Sam Burns’ Underground Soul Solution at Eighteenth Street Lounge. Sam is the one constant on DCs underground house scene, and you can always rely on Sunday nights at ESL for quality soulful house. The Metaphysical will be holding things down in the Main Room, and there’ll be all the usual $5 drinks specials from 9pm to 11pm.

https://www.facebook.com/18thStLounge

Our next pick for Sunday is Groovetop ft Lauren Lane at Flash supported by a solid local line up of Benoit (of R&B fame), Yaco and Heather Femia. We’ve not yet made it to a Groovetop party, but we’ve heard good things. We’re really hoping this one takes off! The party kicks off at 6pm. Free before 8pm, the $10 after.

https://www.facebook.com/events/1496316967299411

And so on to our last pick for the weekend, The NeedlExchange at Velvet Lounge. A great bet if you want to get away from the big venues and enjoy an eclectic musical selection from the talented DJ crew of Baronhawk, Bil Todd and Tommy Cornelis. 7pm until close, no cover.

https://www.facebook.com/events/793356377403824/

That’s it for this week’s top picks, so let’s look at the full listings of all the best underground deep house and electronic music events in Washington DC from Thursday to Sunday. While we’ve picked out the events we think are best, there are so many more events to choose from, so worth your time scrolling through the full list. You don’t expect us to get it right, do you? Remember to click through to the Facebook event pages for more details, and don’t forget to click Join and invite your friends if you plan on attending.
