DC House Grooves Weekend Round Up: The Best Underground House and Electronic Music Events in Washington DC October 15 to October 18

It’s that time again! I’m still buzzing from a double dose of Body Werk last weekend. Our monthly event in the Flash Bar on Friday was the best one yet, and I had a great time going back to back with Sarah Myers all night. We even saw a special appearance by Benoit of R&B fame, who stopped by after wrapping up support for Danny Howells at U Street Music Hall.  So much great music, and we had a great crowd dancing in the bar all night long. Can’t wait for the next one! Saturday night, it was DC House Grooves vs. Slope Traxx at DC9 NightclubKatrina put in an impressive debut performance behind the decks, and it was great hearing Jubilee and Ramirez doing what they do best. What really made the night this time was the visuals by [capsaicin]. We’ll definitely be having him back for our next Body Werk event at DC9 Nightclub on November 14, when the NeedlExchange DJs will be taking over. Really excited for that one!

UPDATE: Since I wrote the paragraph below, I have discussed the situation with the management at Eighteenth Street Lounge, who clarified that I was never banned from the Lounge, but they didn’t want me performing there because of my negative Facebook comment. They have accepted my apology, the comment has been deleted, and everything has now been straightened out. I truly appreciate them reaching out to me and discussing the situation, and I’m glad it is now resolved. Now let’s get back to what this is all about… music, dancing and having fun 🙂

Now on to something a little less fun. I received some upsetting news earlier this week, when two promoters who had booked me for events on the patio at Eighteenth Street Lounge in the coming weeks explained to me that the management at ESL had informed them I was not welcome there due to comments I had made on Facebook. I was stunned to hear this, as over the last 18 months since I started the DC House Grooves Weekend Round Up I have been a constant supporter of ESL, spending many unpaid hours compiling and writing up their events and encouraging people to go there. Indeed, only last week I dedicated a significant part of the post covering ESL’s 20th birthday celebrations. I then remembered a few weeks ago that, while engaging in some light hearted banter in a Facebook comment thread about tough choices on where to go on a Friday night, I had expressed a personal preference for an event at another venue over an event at ESL, and my comment was inartfully worded. I did not intend the comment to be mean or malicious; I was just expressing my preference for where I intended to go that night based on what I was in the mood for.  Indeed, in the Weekend Round Up that same week, I had featured that ESL event in my top picks. I’m not usually one to air my dirty laundry in public, but I have tried multiple times to reach out to the management at ESL to discuss this and offer my apology for any misunderstanding, but they haven’t replied. If the management at ESL are reading this, I would like to offer you my sincerest apologies. I have nothing but love for ESL, which I hope is evident from the constant support I have given you through this blog over the past 18 months or so. My comment was not intended to offend or upset anyone. It was just a bit of light hearted online banter amongst friends. I realize the comment has upset you; the steps you have taken to retaliate against me hit me where it hurts the most. I was really looking forward to both of those gigs, and now I can’t be a part of them. You have wielded your power to take away the thing I love most: playing music to a crowd.  It hurts me deeply to be persona non grata at ESL, a venue where I have enjoyed many memorable nights over the last few years. I realize your desire to hit back for the perceived slight is driven by your passion and love for the Lounge, similar to the passion and love for the DC scene which motivates me to carry on with this weekly blog, so I can understand where it is coming from. I don’t expect you to change your minds; I only hope you will accept my apology and believe me when I say I didn’t mean to upset or offend anyone, or to impact your business in any way. I will continue to support ESL through this blog, despite no longer being welcome there. DC House Grooves is all about supporting the local underground house music scene here in DC and Eighteenth Street Lounge is a key part of that scene. Life is too short for grudges, and disputes like this don’t help us push things forward on the DC underground music scene. I would, however, encourage you to open your minds to constructive criticism. If you see or hear someone make a negative comment about ESL, banning them from the Lounge shouldn’t be your first recourse. Engage with them and listen to what they have to say. Use it as an opportunity to get useful feedback to help you improve. No venue is perfect, and you can always learn by listening to your customers. To everyone else reading this, make sure you stop by ESL this weekend. I have included all their weekend events in this week’s picks, and as always, there’s a great variety of quality music on offer, featuring great local and out of town talent. I won’t be able to join you, but if you get the opportunity to speak to the management, please pass on my apology and give them my best regards.

With that out of the way, lets get on with the business at hand. As usual, I’ve listed out my picks below, along with everything else going on towards the bottom of the post.  You can catch me tomorrow at Bump’n’Grind in Silver Spring for Flutterby: Stories About Sound. Not a house music event, but an opportunity to exchange stories about sound. I’m looking forward to sharing my own anecdote about sound, and hearing from others. The event runs from 7pm to 9pm. Hopefully I can think of a good sound related story before then! Planning on stopping by House Rituals with Heather Femia, Juan Zapata and Sarah Myers after. Great music in a great spot… well worth checking out! Then on Friday, I’ll be guesting on the WTF?! Radio Show with Corduroy Mavericks and Kochi. Tune in from 5pm to 7pm ET at http://www.sugarshackrecordings.com. After the show I’ll be heading into town and bouncing between Flash & Kowli present Butane, K.atou, Shemroon at Flash and Miguel Migs with Sam Burns, Tim Jackson at U Street Music Hall, making sure I get to U Hall early to catch Tim Jackson‘s set. Saturday night I’m playing at U Street Music Hall alongside Citizen Select supporting Sweden’s Jonas Rathsman. I couldn’t be more excited about another opportunity to work that Martin Audio sound system! I’ve got some amazing music to share, and I couldn’t think of a better place to do it. Once I wrap up at U Hall, I plan to stop by Flash for their J themed DJ night, with JimpsterJuan Zapata and Joe L taking charge of the main floor all night. Definitely worth getting there early to hear Joe working the Funktion Ones if you can! Also planning on stopping by the Flash Bar  on the way through to throw a few shapes with Throe and Tommy Cornelis.  The party won’t start, however, until I get to Midnight Project with Joaquin “Joe” ClaussellRamirez and R&B at a super secret location. This is the place to be on Saturday night… if you haven’t grabbed your advanced tickets yet, I recommend you move fast, as they’ll be gone long before the party starts, and there won’t be any available at the door. My pick for Sunday is Eighteenth Street Lounge, with the Sundays Rooftop Drumma Records Showcase on the patio, Sam ” The Man” Burns bringing the soulful and classic house vibes in the Gold Room, and The Metaphysical in the Main Room. Something for everyone across three floors!

That’s all I’ve got for this week. Check the picks and all the rest below, and don’t forget to check back next week for everything you need to plan your weekend on the dance floors of DC.
