DC House Grooves Weekend Round Up: The Best Underground House and Electronic Music Events in Washington DC October 8 to October 11

Another big weekend coming up in the District of Corruption. The big news this week is Eighteenth Street Lounge‘s 20th birthday celebration, which could quite easily be a one stop shop for any self respecting house head this weekend, with performances from many local favorites from ESL‘s rich history, along with some huge names from out of town returning for the celebrations. FK5All Good Funk AllianceRob Paine & the Solomonic Sound SystemCarlton Livingtson, See-I, 95 NorthThomas BlondetThe Thievery Corporation, FaridDJ DayTodd TerrySam BurnsSleazy McQueenMr. BonkerzDJ SpinnaChris Styles, and more playing across ESL‘s four rooms from Friday to Sunday. You won’t find such a varied and eclectic line up anywhere else, so I recommend you get down to Eighteenth Street Lounge at some point this weekend and join the festivities. Make sure you grab Advanced Tickets, as I predict demand will be very high,  particularly for 95 North and Thievery Corporation on Saturday and Todd TerryDJ Spinna and Sleazy McQueen on Sunday. You can grab tickets for each day individually, or a full three day party pass covering the whole weekend. A great opportunity to celebrate and support such a unique and treasured venue.

No Meet the Locals podcast this week, but you can aways take the time to check out the previous podcasts, featuring some amazing mixes from local DC DJ talent. We’ve got some amazing podcasts lined up for the near future from some big local names, so follow DC House Grooves on Soundcloud to get them as soon as they are published.

Since I don’t have a new podcast for you this week, I recommend you check out 1432R Recordings latest Extended Family podcast from Dawit Eklund. Proper eclectic vibes, featuring unreleased fire forthcoming on 1432.

So what’s on deck for this weekend? Well, as mentioned above, the ESL XX celebrations are going on all weekend at Eighteenth Street Lounge, and that’s my top pick for the weekend. Whatever you do, try and stop in there at some point. Thursday night, your best bet for quality happy hour house vibes is Happy Hour House Vibez with Juan Zapata at Dunya. I played there last week, and it was a great vibe all round, with true house heads gathering to get down. With Juan Zapata at the controls this week, I can tell you right now you’re in for a treat. After Dunya, head over to Toro Toro, where I’ll be joining Heather Femia behind the decks for SkyliteDC presents House Rituals. Looking forward to taking things back to some true house vibes. If you love house music, I can tell you right now that House Rituals is a great bet for Thursday night! Other great options for Thursday are Taking DC Back at The Salty Dog. Not too sure who they are taking DC back from, or why DC needs taking back, but this looks like a solid multi genre night featuring an all local line up including the likes of local legends Juan Zapata and Lexus King, and that’s something we should all be supporting. I won’t be able to make it tomorrow, but would love to hear from anyone who goes. Last pick for Friday is one for the drum and bass and garage heads: head to Flash for Cyantific and The UKG Social.

Lots to choose from on Friday night, but as always I suggest you kick things off with the WTF?! Radio Show with Corduroy Mavericks and Kochi. Always great music on the WTF?! show, and I’m excited to be featured as a guest on the show next Friday 10/16. Tune in at http://www.sugarshackrecordings.com. Some great stuff going down on U Street Friday night. At Flash, its a celebration of 10 years of Hello?Repeat with Jan Krueger and Daze Maxim in the main room with support from Nick Williams. Down in the Flash Bar, it’s another edition of Body Werk, and this month I’ll be joined behind the decks by local favorite Sarah Myers for a night of quality music open to close. Down the street at U Street Music HallDanny Howells headlines with support from one of my favorite local DJ duos, R&B. It’s free before 11pm, so I strongly encourage you to get there early to hear what Rosario and Benoit do with U Hall’s banging sound system. Up at Zeba Bar, South London record label Her Records take over DC. A great choice for getting down with the heads in the neighborhood. Over in Petworth at The Looking Glass Lounge, its another edition of MOdERN Class with DJs ProvokeTrev-ski and Fulano. Funk, disco, boogie and new wave all night long, baby.

The big news for Saturday night is the first birthday party of DC House Grooves’ very own party Body Werk at DC9 Nightclub. Hard to believe that our first monthly party was a year ago. We never expected the party to continue for six months, let alone a year, but thanks to a loyal following and a constant supply of local DJs and crews willing to step up to the plate, we’ve managed to keep things going. For our first birthday celebration, which also doubles as co-founder Katrina‘s birthday, we’ve got a main floor battle pitching DC House Grooves against local label Slope Traxx, with myself and Katrina in the DC House Grooves corner, and Jubilee and Ramirez representing Slope Traxx. With visuals provided by [Capsaicin] and that Void Acoustics sound system, you’ve got all the ingredients for a great night on the dance floor. But that’s not all: up on the rooftop, special guest Adrian Loving will be adding that extra special touch. Other great options for Saturday night include Damian Lazarus with support from Sarah Myers and Philco at Flash, and Trev-ski‘s party North East Disco Communications at Jimmy Valentine’s, with DJ Nav, Ben Jenkins and Tom Kraak. Another great option for the house heads is House Carnival Ch. 2 at the Mellow Mushroom, featuring Brian Coxx. Always a great vibe with the Milk Chocolate City crew. My last recommendation for Saturday is Vague Output at The Crown in Baltimore, featuring Boss RossSK UltraSymmetrical and BWO. A no brainer if you’re in Baltimore already, and worth the trip up from DC for if you lean more towards the techno end of the dance music spectrum.

When Sunday comes around, Eighteenth Street Lounge remains a solid choice, with house legend Todd Terry joining Sam “The Man” Burns in the Gold Room, Sleazy McQueen and Mr. Bonkerz in the Main Room and DJ Spinna and Chris Styles out on the patio. The Sunglass Sundays season finale at Public Bar is another great choice, featuring Shonky (Apollonia) with support from a super solid lineup including Sarah MyersWahiVanniety KillsMeegs and Heather Femia. Definitely worth checking out for one last blast on the rooftop, particularly if you’re luck enough to have Columbus Day off work. For more quality soulful and classic house on Sunday, check out House-N-U: The Big Bang at Zeba Bar featuring Mark Francis (Shelter) and resident Andrew Hogans. Get there early, as it’s free before 9pm, $10 after. My last pick for Sunday is Toolroom‘s Mark Knight at Soundcheck, with support from Matt Goldman. I still haven’t been to check out Soundcheck, but they are booking some great guests on Sunday nights, and I’ve heard it’s a killer sound system. If you stop by on Sunday, please send me a full report!

That’s it for my commentary for this week. You’ll find my full list of picks with flyers and event links below, followed by all the rest of the events on my radar. You can catch me on Thursday at Toro Toro, Friday in the Flash Bar and Saturday at DC9. I hope to see some of your happy smiling faces on the dance floor!
