DC House Grooves Weekend Round Up: The Best Underground House and Electronic Music Events in Washington DC September 17 to September 20

Just when you think things can’t get any better in DC, along comes a weekend like the one fast approaching. If last weekend wasn’t mad enough for you, this weekend takes us to a level of crazy we’ve not seen in a while. Might as well take Monday off work now, as you’ll need it to decompress. You can pretty much keep going from Friday night to Sunday night without stopping, with the help of an IV drip of 5 Hour Energy and your handy dance floor strategy guide from DC House Grooves. Not going to spend too much time dwelling on last weekend. Body Werk in the Flash Bar with me and Aaron Sparks was the best one yet, the end of the night slow jam session being one for the books! The Body Werk Everybody Loves Music Reunion on Saturday night with Joe LJuan Zapata and surprise special guests Dimitri Max and Hugo Zapata was also pretty special. While I was up in the rooftop bar spinning open to close, I’ve heard some magic was being worked on the dance floor downstairs as the DJs held an emotional reunion behind the turntables. My biggest regret from last weekend was not making the trip to The Paradox in Baltimore for the first episode of Deep Sugar‘s trifecta of parties to celebrate their 12th anniversary. Tony Humphries was headlining the main room, and I missed it. Hanging my head in shame here. The next episode of the trifecta is on Saturday October 3 with Quentin Harris headlining, along with a huge line up of Deep Sugar DJs, past and present, and I’m going to do everything in my power to make it. I rounded off last weekend at The Howard Theater for FORWARD‘s first event in a while featuring The Orb. I have to admit, I went in with low expectations, but it turned about to be an amazing event. It was an older crowd of heads, but The Orb got that place jumping in a textbook example of teasing a crowd onto the dance floor. By the end of the night, the place was going crazy! The high point for me was hearing themes from the KLF‘s seminal ambient album Chill Out, an album more or less on repeat during my college years, and etched into my synapses like no other album. Truly made my night. If you’ve never listened to Chill Out, then I recommend you fix that at the earliest opportunity, preferably after the club when you’re in a receptive mood. Here’s the whole album in all it’s glory. Essential listening. You can thank me later.

Right, let’s get into it. Gonna have to get through this quickly, as I’m heading down to Fairfax to spin at Transit later tonight. Thursday night, you’ve got Cadence‘s second anniversary at Flash, with Bachelors of ScienceSubmorphics on the main floor supported by Drone, Seany Ranks and Vanniety Kills, while down in the Flash Bar, my main man KochiSteve Kirn and Sam “The Man” Burns are at the controls open to close. The bar also features a Happy Hour Art Show featuring the work of Jason Guidry and Steve Kirn. Well worth checking out. Down the street at U Street Music Hall, the Amalgamation crew present a ridiculous lineup featuring Pearson SoundRon Morelli, local super stars Beautiful Swimmers and Refugee. A great line up for a Thursday night at U Hall, and with a Thursday night crowd, it’s sure to be a great work out on the dance floor.

My picks for Friday kick off with the WTF?! Radio Show, and this week Kochi is joined by DJ Nav and DJ Meegs for what’s sure to be a killer show. Tune in from 5pm at http://www.sugarshackrecordings.com. Next up, head to The Embassy Row Hotel for Lovecamp featuring David Rosenberg and Daivik. Fall is fast approaching, so you’ve not got much more time to groove by the rooftop pool as the sun sets, and I’m sure Rosenberg has some musical treats lined up to make it a memorable one. My pick for quality house, disco, soul, funk and everything in between in DC on Friday is ESL Fridays, which this week features Joe L on the patio open to close, with Chris Annibell in the Gold Room and Qdup in the main room. Joe L‘s an amazing DJ, and this is a great opportunity to hear him work some magic in an extended set. The real action on Friday, however, is in Baltimore, with Vague Output at The Crown featuring Entro Senestre and Pure Matrix from L.I.E.S. Recordings supported by residents Alex Gardel and Aphreaq, and our top pick for the night, Kowli presents Youandewan, Mazi RGerman Chris, with support from Feroun and Novac at The Darkroom. This is where you want to be if you want to dance until dawn on Friday night.

Saturday is all about the H Street Festival. I’m not even going to try to cover the everything. You can get full details over on the event page, which includes line ups for all the stages. I recommend you check out Funk The House (A Little Richard Simmons Joint) at the Jambulance by 12th St, which features an incredible line up of local favorites including little old me, Brothers Brau, DJ MadscienceKochiTim Jackson Vanniety Kills, along with a special tribute to Jon Horvath from Fort Knox Five‘s Steve RaskinQdup. Jackson Pro Audio will be handling the sound, and rumor has it, they’ll be brining everything but the kitchen sink. Prepare for some BASS! Be aware that the set times published on the main H St. Festival page are incorrect. Here are the actual set times for the Jambulance:

12-1pm: Kochi Rashid
1-2pm: Brothers Brau
2-3pm: Andy Grant
3-4pm: DJ Madscience
4-5pm: Special Jon Horvath Tribute tag team set from Fort Knox Five‘s Steve Raskin
and Qdup
5-6pm: Tim Jackson
6-7pm: Vanniety Kills

An incredible line up for the afternoon… come down and groove with us in the sunshine! Hope to see some familiar faces in the crowd when I’m on between 2pm and 3pm.

Your other mandatory stop at H Street Festival is ROAM presents Outlier at the Capital Fringe space on Florida avenue. The ROAM crew have assembled another killer all local line up, including DJ Lisa FrankChris NittiAri Goldman from The Beautiful SwimmersJuan Zapata, the TNX DJs and Dawit Eklund. With Jackson Pro Audio providing the the German engineered Dynacord sound system, the Ball or Nothing food truck and Bump’n’Grind selling vinyl all day, this is definitely going to be another one for the books. Get weird with the ROAM crew from 2pm to 10pm.

Other worthwhile stops at the H Street Festival include One Love Massive featuring music from Trevor Keen, and the Blisspop Slice party at The Rock’n’Roll Hotel, featuring all the Blisspop DJs. Check out the event pages for more details.

Top pick for Saturday night is the NO RULES! NO RULES! warehouse party, featuring a killer all-local DJ line up to keep you grooving until the sun comes up: FerounCharles MartinSarah MyersRamirez and Jubilee, along with a special guest to be announced. They’ll be bringing in quality sound from Jackson Pro Audio, and I predict a great vibe for this one. Word has it this is the first in a series of No Rules parties, so make sure you get down there on Saturday night / Sunday morning.  so you can say you were there at the start. Grab your advanced tickets over on RA.

If you’re not up for sweating until dawn in a dark warehouse with the cream of local DJ talent, our other picks for Saturday night are:

  • DJ Three at Flash, with support from local DJ royalty Lisa Frank and Navbox, with the #BODYFEEL crew taking over the bar with a line up featuring residents DansmanThroe and special guest Heights.
  • Julio Bashmore with Youandewan and Trev-ski at U Street Music Hall
  • House-N-U with Stan Zeff and Derrick “D-Train” Coleman at Zeba Bar.

All great options for quality dance floor action this Saturday night.

If you’re still standing after Saturday, Sunday is ready to completely kick your ass, in a good way, of course. I recommend you get started with a gentle cruise down the Potomac river with the Soundwaves crew. Lol. Yeah, not gonna be anything gentle about this one. The final Soundwaves Boat Party of the year sails from Georgetown at 5.30pm, and you’re going to want to be on that boat. NavboxJuan Zapata and Sarah Myers will be handling the tunes, so you know you’re in for a musical treat. Make sure you grab your advanced tickets as soon as possible; the last one sold out pretty fast, and people were left behind disappointed. I’ve already got mine!

After the Soundwaves party, my top pick is Sundays Rooftop at Eighteenth street Lounge, featuring Andrey Pushkarev with support from local favorites Jubilee, Juan Zapata and Benoit. Last time Andrey Pushkarev visited DC to play Midnight Project, the party was cut short by the authorities, but you can guarantee that won’t happen this time! Even more awesome than that stellar line up, there’s no cover, so my top pick is also the budget pick! And, of course, if you feel like a break from the patio, you can check out Sam “The Man” Burns and special guest Gigitesta in the Gold Room, and The Metaphysical in the Main Room. Eighteenth Street Lounge FTW!

Another great option for Sunday is Auricle Recordings presents Quivver and Kimball Collins at Flash, along with a huge line up of local talent in support, including Rodd SimChristauffKochiDarius TwinBrad PiffPatrick Currier and many more. The party kicks off at 5pm and goes until 2am.

OK… I’m done for this week. All work and no play makes Andy a dull boy. All the picks are listed below with the event links, and you’ll find all the rest beneath the picks. Hope you’ve found this useful, and I hope you all have an amazing time this weekend. Looking forward to seeing everyone out and about!
