DC House Grooves Weekend Round Up: The Best Underground House and Electronic Music Events in Washington DC October 23 – October 26

Welcome back to the DC House Grooves Weekend Round Up. If you’re anything like us, you just can’t wait for the weekend, so its time to start figuring out where to get your dance floor fix. Yet again there’s an amazing range of events in and around DC, so check out our picks, and don’t forget to look through all the listings. There’s so much going on, you’re sure to find something to get you grooving.

Last House On The Left at TropicaliaBefore we get into things, a quick word about a party we’re involved with for Halloween. There are a ton of Halloween parties on Friday, October 31 (we know all too well.. we’ve already prepared the listings!). But when your Halloween party is over, where are you going to go? Well we’ve got just the thing for all the ghouls, ghosts and lost souls needing somewhere to get their groove on during the early hours of Saturday. The Last House on the Left is a collaboration between local label Slope Traxx, Deep Secrets, DC House Grooves and Nomad, and promises to be the ultimate Halloween after party, with an incredible lineup of local talent, including Chris Nitti & Lisa Frank (ROAM), R&B (Deep Secrets), Andy Grant (DC House Grooves / Body Werk) and Jubilee & Ramirez (Slope Traxx). The party is at Tropicalia, kicks off at 3am and runs to 12pm.  This one is sure to be a road block, so make sure you grab your pre-sale tickets; they’ll cost more at the door.

Advanced tickets for Last House on the Left at Tropicalia

OK, so what about last weekend? We didn’t make it out at all, choosing instead to stay home, get stuff done, and get some rest. Wonderfully productive, but it has us looking forward to some serious dance floor action this weekend. Based on reports from our network of intrepid reporters, the high points last weekend were Lost on Thursdays with Jubilee and Ramirez doing their thing and Cadence presents Ladies of the Underground Takeover ft DJ Rap at Flash on Thursdays. Friday night saw Apollonia take over the decks all night at U Hall to celebrate their Tour à Tour album launch, and word has it they had the place jumping all night long. Meanwhile up at Zeba Bar, Funk the Police: Get down to get your rights up! was a huge success, with Meegs‘ and Juan Zapata‘s sets being highlights. The words “killing it” and “crushing it” were getting thrown around, we hear. Saturday afternoon and evening was all about ROAM VI, which we wish we could have made it to. We had to make do with all the wonderful pics on Facebook. If only we could have tuned in… next time, broadcast it, ROAMers! Down at Flash, H-Foundation took over the main floor and rocked the place. Another one we regret not attending. Hoping to catch them next time they are in town. Didn’t hear much from the Sunday parties, but I’m sure a good time was had by all. If you attend a great party this coming weekend that you think we should be reporting on, please send us a full report through the DC House Grooves Facebook page. We want to do our bit to spread the word about great parties, but we can’t attend them all!

Yeah, yeah, we know. Too much chat when you want to hear about this week’s picks. Well before we get into that, we just wanted to give a quick shout out to Mixology, which is going on in Baltimore all this week and through the weekend. Mixology is a collaborative movement involving a whole bunch of Baltimore based crews to celebrate dance music and culture, with nightly parties, workshops, demonstrations, roundtable discussions, networking events and so on. Sounds really cool, and is 100% supported by DC House Grooves. We have listed a few of the major Mixology events in this week’s Round Up, but there’s way too much for us to cover here, so please head over to their website for more info:

Mixology Baltimore

Ok then, let’s get on with this week’s picks. If you plan on attending an event, click through to the Facebook event page, click Join to let the promoters know you’re in, then click Invite and invite your friends.

Thursday Picks

First up for Thursday is our regular pick for your trip home from work, DJ Earic Patten’s Elektrik Metro House Vibes Live Mix Sessions w/ Special Guest Captain Smackdown (Los Angeles, CA). Always a great choice for rush hour listening.  The show kicks off at 5pm ET and runs until 7pm ET.

Tune in:

Top pick for Thursday night out on the town is Lost on Thursdays: Don’t Be Sober In October feat. Randall M. (tINI and the gang)  & Sarah Myers at Lost Society. This is a great opportunity to catch an international guest without any cover charge, and the Lost on Thursdays crowd always makes for a great dance floor vibe. We recommend getting there early to catch local favorite Sarah Myers, as her sets are always a treat.  No cover, 21+. Free glass of champagne for the ladies before 12pm, and all the usual drinks specials.

https://www.facebook.com/events/1562812657265479

Our next pick for Thursday is  over at Flash, where Bob Moses are headlining the main floor, with local support from former DC House Grooves Radio Show guest, Raffi, and Fort Fairmont down in the Flash Bar. We were lucky enough to catch Bob Moses last year at Dirty Bar, performing their unique act, combining live music and vocals. They will be performing a 90 minute live set at Flash, with an opening set by Raffi of Loop DC. We encourage you to get there early for Raffi. He’s one of our favorite locals!  Advanced tickets are currently $8 on Ticketfly, more on the door.

https://www.facebook.com/events/277567155771955/

Our final pick for Thursday is Disco Made Me Do It Edition V at The Wonderland Ballroom in Columbia Heights, with Ferdinand and the Ghost, Mr Bonkerz, Ypset and Jacq Jill. We haven’t made it to any of the Disco Made Me Do It events yet, but it’s great to see events going down in neighborhoods away from the U St / Dupont / Adams Morgan bubble, and this looks like a great local lineup. If you attend, we’d love to hear what you think. No cover, 21+.

Friday Picks

Top pick for Friday is  Butch, Navbox, Chris Nitti, #Bodyfeel (90s Nick, Coby Jones, PK) at Flash. We’re not too familiar with Butch, but I’m sure with Visionquest and Desolat releases on his resumé, he’ll know his way around a set of decks. We’re choosing this as our top pick due to the local support from Chris Nitti and Navbox, who always deliver the goods. You really want to hear these guys give the Flash sound system a work out. Down in the Flash Bar, there’s a new party #Bodyfeel, with PK, Coby Jones and 90s Nick, which promises to be a lot of fun. Advanced tickets are $8 from Ticketfly, more on the door, and there’s a free drink with admission before 11pm. 21+. Get there early for Nitti and Navbox!

Selectors: A Night of Music Curated by Boss Ross and Measax at Dr. Clock’s Nowhere Bar

Our other pick for Friday night is a really interesting sounding event at Dr. Clock’s Nowhere Bar, where former DC House Grooves radio show guest Boss Ross, alongside Measax, will be carefully selecting tunes from a whole range of genres, including dub, house, techno, random acid jazz, an African rhythm record, and whatever takes their fancy, for your listening pleasure. These cats know their stuff, so it promises to be a musically diverse night. Definitely worth checking out if you want something a bit different this Friday. No cover, 21+, lots of drinks specials.

Saturday Picks

What Had Happened Was… with Tim Jackson & Andy Grant at Jimmy Valentine’s Lonely Hearts Club

Our top pick for Saturday is Tim Jackson‘s monthly party What Had Happened Was... at Jimmy Valentine’s Lonely Hearts Club. This month’s guest is none other than our very own Andy Grant, who will be joining Tim to spin club classics from the nineties and noughties. Remember those big tunes that you used to hear on the dance floor of Tracks and Nation? That’s the sweet spot Tim and Andy will be shooting for. They’ll be leaving all the new stuff at home, and playing all those great tunes that used to make you sweat back in the day. No cover, 21+. We hope to see you on the dance floor!

https://www.facebook.com/events/861819697170236/

Bump ‘n Grind w/ DJ Nav, Resonance & Refugee

Next up for Saturday is Bump’n’Grind at Zeba Bar with resident Refugee, Resonance and local DJ / Producer and former DC House Grooves Radio Show guest DJ Nav spinning nothing but vinyl all night long, and if we know Nav, he’ll be serving up nothing but the finest garage. We’ve been loving the Bump’n’Grind parties, and you can guarantee a great vibe on the dance floor over there at Zeba Bar. Definitely a great option if you’re in the neighborhood.

https://www.facebook.com/events/330568157129522

ESL Saturdays: Rhythm & Culture presents Juan Zapata and Charles Martin

Our next pick for Saturday is Eighteenth Street Lounge, where the uber talented Juan Zapata will be headlining in the Gold Room, ably supported by Charles Martin. That’s enough to convince us, but with Tommy Cornelis going back to back with Trev-ski in the Main Room and Mr. Bonkerz out on the patio, you’ve got  enough variety to keep you dancing all night! Our recommendation: head straight for the Gold Room and get down to Charles & Juan.

https://www.facebook.com/18thStLounge

Bliss: Will Eastman, DJ Lisa Frank at U Street Music Hall

Our final pick for Saturday is Will Eastman‘s monthly Bliss party at U Street Music Hall. This month, ROAM’s DJ Lisa Frank will be joining will in the DJ booth, for a pairing that promises to deliver surprises all night long. Bliss parties are always a lot of fun, and this one promises to be no exception. Free before 12am for 21+, free with wristband/ticket stub from Sbtrkt for 21+, otherwise $10.

Sunday Picks

The House That U Built – Closing Finale Teaser Reunion Party – Part 1 Of 1!

And so on to Sunday, where things are starting to die down a bit now the weather is getting colder and the days are getting shorter. Never fear, however, because the rooftop party season isn’t quite done yet! Our top pick for Sunday is the season finale of The House That U Built, and they’ve teamed up with our friends at Eighty Eight DC and Forward DC to bring you something extra special to close out the season. As usual, there’s an incredible lineup of locals, including Vanniety Kills, Taiga, Sarah MyersKeenan Orr and Dave Martin, but for their grand finale they’ve got some super special surprise guests. We’ve done out best to try and get the scoop on who these surprise guests are, but our sources in the Forward and The House That U Built camps are remaining tight lipped! You’ll have to get yourself to the Dirty Bar rooftop on Sunday to find out. We’ll certainly be there, and we predict a family reunion vibe as the regular crowd turns out to see the season out with a bang. The party kicks off at 4pm. No cover, drinks specials between 4pm and 6pm.

https://www.facebook.com/events/310543002482317/

ESL Sundays

Our other pick for Sunday is ESL Sundays, where Ken Lazee from U Street Music Hall will be joining Sam ‘The Man’ Burns for Underground Soul Solution in the Gold Room, with Farid in the Main Room and The Metaphysical out on the patio. As always, a great Sunday lineup for ESL. Drinks specials from 9pm to 11pm.

DC House Grooves Meet The Locals Podcast #3: Boss Ross

Boss Ross Here we are with the third edition of the DC House Grooves Meet The Locals Podcast. For this edition, we’ve got a superb underground mix from a regular on the local DC scene, Boss Ross. Originally hailing from Detroit, you can find Boss Ross playing regularly in and around DC. Over to the Boss himself for more about the mix:

“For those who might not know me I play Detroit house and deep techno throughout the MVA area. Playing records before a sometimes captive audience for the last 4.5 years has been a great pleasure and once again I thank everyone who has given me a chance to present the music I am fortunate enough to possess. This mix attempts to combine all of the elements I like to present when I play at venues like Flash, Uhall, Tropicalia, Zeba coach and pole bar and of course the backedbar. Those elements being analog treatment, acid lines, pianos and sparse vocals. I used two Technics SL-1200M3D turntables, one Allen and Heath Xone 22 mixer, two stanton groovemaster cartridges, two mukatsuku disc stabilizers, vinyls and one can of mandarin flavored seltzer to create what you listen to today.

My principal association is to Composite which is a group of seven veteran techno DJs who play a monthly party currently located at Flash nightclub. Composite has several irons in the fire for some great techno coming to familiar places this fall. Additionally, I do gigs for the likes of 88/Forward, Vague Output crew in Baltimore, SelectDC,Trevor Keen and pretty much anyone with a shiny object and a drink ticket. It’s my goal after 6 years to take what I’ve gathered in front of the fine people in this area and make my own tracks. As of now I will continue to collect and mix the best of what comes to my ears. Thank you for lending yours and I look forward to seeing so many great people out and about again very soon.”

DC House Grooves Meet The Locals Podcast #2: Chadwick

DJ Chadwick

DJ Chadwick

For episode #2 of the DC House Grooves Meet the Locals podcast we’ve got a great mix from Flash resident Chadwick. Here’s what Chadwick has to say about this mix: “My podcast for DC House Grooves is based on my set from the last Resident Night party at Flash. It’s a peak hour blend of techno, house and tribal rhythms layered with classic loops, effects, acapellas and personal edits. The crowd stayed late and I had a really good time playing off of their energy. The mix was created on 4 decks with 4 effects and most all of the tracks are re-touched live by enhancing the breakdowns, extending parts and blending new elements to build a mix that reflects my sets at Flash. Most importantly though, I hope it keeps your attention and throws a few surprises along the way. Enjoy!”

You can catch Chadwick next at The House That U Built on Sunday, September 28th at Dirty Bar in Washington, DC:

DC House Grooves Weekend Round Up July 17 – July 20

Well last weekend was nothing short of amazing out there on the DC underground scene. The  high points for us were getting down to The Metaphysical on the patio at ESL on Friday, followed by Flash with the Blkmarket Membership crew, then Navbox’s birthday party at Flash on Saturday , where Juan Zapata’s set was a major highlight. On Sunday, both the Sunglass  Sundays and Sunday’s Rooftop parties were amazing, and it was hard work deciding how to split our time between those rockin’ dance floors. As always, we were filled with regret for not making it to Deep Sugar, and as always we are promising ourselves that we will make the pilgrimage to the Paradox for their next monthly party! I guess the low point for the weekend was the U Street Music Hall security denying us entry to their party with Hector on Friday around 1.30am for no apparent reason. Very disappointing.

Anyway, without further ado, it’s time again to round up all the best underground house and electronic music events in the Washington, DC area for the coming weekend. As always, there is plenty going on this weekend, so check out the events below, get your ass out on one or more of these dance floors and support your local scene!

Thursday July 17

Fly in July at Lost on Thursdays with Jubilee, Andy Grant and RamirezThe #1 recommendation for your Thursday night is DC House Grooves favorite Lost on Thursdays. This week it’s Fly In July, with locals Andy Grant (yeah, that’s me), Jubilee and Ramirez. The three of us jammed together on a recent DC House Grooves show and had a blast, so we’re bringing it to the Lost rooftop on Thursday. As always, there is no cover, and there’s a free glass of champagne for the ladies before midnight. The Lost rooftop is the best place to be on a hot summer night, and we will be laying on the finest deep tunes to start your weekend off right.

First up is 4 Hours of Funk Artscape Edition at the Windup Space with residents Graham & Fleg, with DJ Sean J and Landis Expandis. We’ve never made it to one of the 4 Hours of Funk events, but we’ve heard nothing but good things, so this one comes with a strong recommendation. Free before 11pm, $5 after. 21+.

ElektrikEventz™ presents: Elev8 - A Grown & Sexy Night of House MusicFirst up for Saturday night is a new night at Lima Lounge from ElektrikEventz™, run by former Tracks DC resident DJ Earic Patten. The night is called Elev8, and it promises to be a Grown & Sexy night of house music, with DJs Ross Mt. Park, Darius Twin and DJ Earic Patten himself. The dress code is smart casual, and there is no cover. I have to admit to being a little hesitant whenever I see a flyer telling me how to dress, and I made a personal promise never to return to Lima Lounge after their door staff made a big fuss of very publicly refusing me entry for wearing the wrong kind of shoes to their club a few years back, but I am assured by the ElektrikEventz crew that this won’t be happening at Elev8. If you have any problems with the door staff, I recommend asking for a member of the ElektrikEventz team, who will help resolve any issues. We’re happy to see someone trying a new concept in a different venue, and we hope this new night will be a huge success. No cover, 21+. Email Erika@ElektrikEventz.com for list.

With All That Jazz… up on the second floor, they’ve truly got something for everyone.

What Had Happened Was.......Our next recommendation for your Saturday night is two of our favorite DJs playing at one of our favorite venues: What Had Happened Was… at Jimmy Valentine’s Lonely Hearts Club is a new night celebrating the big room sounds of days gone by. Think Nation circa 2000 and you’ll be on the right track. Tim Jackson and Juan Zapata will be your dance floor guides on Saturday, spinning those tunes to remind you that newer isn’t necessarily better. There’s no cover, but don’t forget Jimmys is an all cash bar, so leave your credit cards at home.

SAT July 19 Flash presents: Saeed Younan, Jaceo (Younan Music Showcase & 10 Year Anv. Event)Our final recommendation for Saturday is Flash with Saeed Younan, supported by Jaceo. It is sure to be a road block on the dance floor, but with local legend Saeed working that sound system, it will be worth it! Advanced tickets at $8 on Ticketfly, more on the door.

Sunday July 20

Sun 7/20: The House That U Built ft Kevin Yost (I records, CIRCOLOCO), Double07, iNK House, Juan ZapataOur #1 recommendation for Sunday is The House That U Built on the Dirty Bar rooftop, which this week has a local line up to die for, and I use the term local loosely, because this week they’ve got international recording artist Kevin Yost (iRecords, Circoloco) headlining. Kevin has spent most of the summer so far jumping from one Balearic island to the next performing his superb live show, but this weekend he is back in DC and playing our favorite rooftop. Supporting Kevin on the incredible Dynacord sound system from Jackson Pro Audio will be DC House Grooves favorites Ink House, Double 07 and Juan Zapata. You won’t find a better line up this weekend. Festivities kick off at 4pm, and it is free before 5pm, $5 after. 21+.

Zeba Sunday Sessions 25 | Earic PattenThe Zeba Sunday Sessions up at Zeba Bar deservedly always gets a mention in the weekly round up, and this week they’ve got former Tracks DC resident Earic Patten, supported by residents Stylo and Christauff. Well worth checking out if you’re looking for something more intimate in the neighborhood. Random fact: that’s my Strictly Rhythm slip mat on the flyer!

ESL Sundays July 20And last, but not least for Sunday is ESL Sundays at Eighteenth Street Lounge, with Sam Burns’ Underground Soul Solution in the Gold Room, Bil Todd on the patio and The Metaphysical in the main room. Always one for the heads on Sunday night. 21+, no cover, and $5 drink specials 9-11pm. If you’re looking to dance late on Sunday, ESL is the place to be.

And that wraps it up for the weekend… but for those of you that can’t quite accept that the weekend is over, we’ve got just the thing for you on Monday night:

Monday July 21

Motown on MondaysAs mentioned last week, Motown on Mondays at Den of Thieves on 14th Street (right around the corner from Lost Society) is rapidly becoming the place to be for the heads to catch up and compare notes on their weekend adventures, to a sound track of original Motown classics and remixes from DJs Jayclue and Rusty B.
