DC House Grooves Weekend Round Up: The Best Underground House and Electronic Music Events in Washington DC January 8 – January 11

Happy New Year from the team at DC House Grooves! While our last update covered the first week of 2015, this is our first official post in the New Year. We hope you’ve all recovered from the New Year’s shenanigans. So many good parties we wouldn’t know where to start covering them, but let’s just say we had an amazing time down the Rave Basement celebrating the New Year with a great crew, and Body Werk in the Flash Bar on Jan 2 with Andy Grant and Mazi R was an amazing way to really kick things off for 2015, closely followed by a quality evening at DC9 Nightclub with Team Zapata and Trev-ski. We recorded them all, so if you missed either episode of Body Werk, or just want to re-live them, watch this space! We never made it to Flash for their epic 16 hour NYE celebration, but we heard it was a pretty tasty affair, and we were pleased to hear a solid contingent of hardcore revelers stuck it out for the full 16. Good work, DC!

So without further ado, let’s get on with the picks for this week, followed by the full listings. Don’t be sad that you’re not at the BPM Festival. There’s plenty to do right here in DC, even if the weather isn’t all that. If you plan on going to an event, please head over to the Facebook event page and click Join to let the promoters and your friends know you’re going.

Thursday Picks

Superlost feat. Special Case (St. Petersburg) & Hakob Avjyan at Lost Society

Top pick for all you house heads on Thursday night is Superlost at Lost Society featuring Special Case, all the way from St. Petersburg, with local support from Hakob Avjyan (Nomad). Always a great vibe on the Lost Society rooftop on Thursday nights, and with no cover and lots of drinks specials, you can’t go wrong! 21+.

Fort Knox & Quid Promo present Thriftworks, Flamingosis, Fort Knox Five, All Good Funk Alliance, Qdup at Flash

For some alternative beats on Thursday, over at Flash, Fort Knox & Quid Promo present Thirftworks & Flamingosis with local support from Fort Knox Five. Expect a night of future downtempo: house, bass, hip hop, glitch and beat oriented music, which will no doubt sound amazing on Flash’s Funktion One system. Down in the Flash Bar, All Good Funk Alliance and Qdup will be holding things down open to close. These guys really know how to rock a party, so if you need a break from the main floor, make sure you make some time to get down in the bar. Advanced tickets are $10 from Ticketfly, more on the door. 21+.

Gryphon After Dark Live Music, No Cover: Neo Soul, Trip Hop, Soul & Jazz at The Gryphon

Our final pick is the one for you if you’re entertaining that special date, or looking for a break from the usual electronic beats. Imagine jazz singer, meets piano bar, meets cabaret, meets DC 2014. That’s what Gryphon After Dark promises, and it sounds like the recipe for a great night out. There’s no cover or dress code, so come as you are and enjoy the atmosphere.

Friday Picks

Petworth Funk With Special Guests Meistro, Alex Gardel, Dj Nav, and Andy Grant at The Looking Glass Lounge, Petworth

Our top pick for Friday night is Trev-ski‘s regular Petworth Funk night at The Looking Glass Lounge in Petworth. Trevor always assembles amazing lineups of true heads for this monthly vinyl only night, and this month is no exception, with special guests Meistro from the Sol Power All Stars, Baltimore’s Alex Gardel, DJ Nav and our very own Andy Grant. This really is one for the heads, as these guys will be mining their collections and serving up the finest vinyl treasures for your entertainment and pleasure. There’s no cover, so just show up and enjoy the finest selections from a solid local lineup in a comfortable neighborhood setting.

https://www.facebook.com/events/594178967382939/

Focus: Cell Injection (Drumcell vs. Audio Injection/Truncate) & Ron Jackson at Flash, with Caleb L’Etoile & Philco in the Flash Bar

For your techno fix this Friday, head over to Flash for Focus with techno heavyweights Cell Injection (Drumcell vs. Audio Injection/Truncate), supported by local favorite Ron Jackson. If you need a break from the pounding beats on the main floor, they’ve got you covered with Caleb L’Etoile & Philco serving up the finest house and nu disco in the Flash Bar. Advanced tickets are $8 from Ticketfly, $15 on the door. 21+.

https://www.facebook.com/events/1035736029785701

Foot Therapy II at Dr. Clock’s Nowhere Bar

Our final pick for Friday is another one for the heads. Over at Dr. Clock’s Nowhere Bar in Adams Morgan, its Foot Therapy II, featuring DJ Zach, Ben Mason, Poor Blood and Ben Jenkins. Judging by the event page, these guys will be serving cuts straight from the vinyl, and based on the tracks they’ve been posting, we can tell they know what’s up. We’re quietly hoping that with the name they’ve chosen for their night, at least one of them will be packing Prescription‘s classic Foot Therapy EP, which is a contender for our favorite house record of all time. We can always hope! There’s no cover, so head over to Dr. Clock‘s on Friday for some proper underground vibes served up by heads for heads.

Saturday Picks

Deep Sugar The Official 2015 New Year Kickoff With Louie Vega, Ultra Naté & Lisa Moody At The Paradox, Baltimore

And so on to Saturday, where our top pick is the first edition of Deep Sugar for 2015, with special guest Louie Vega returning to the main room at The Paradox, along with the Girl Squad, Ultra Naté and Lisa Moody. In the Chamber, regulars Danny & Katie Elder and “Mookie” Brock will be joined by special guest Bart, celebrating Bart and Danny’s birthdays. The party kicks off at 9pm with a listening party for Louie Vega‘s new album, to be released in March 2015, and runs until 6am. If you haven’t checked out Deep Sugar yet, it’s the best party on the East Coast, and you really have to experience it for yourself! . $20 general admission.

https://www.facebook.com/events/770855419654758/

Solomun with Juan Zapata, Philip Goyette at U Street Music Hall

Our next pick for Saturday night would be our top pick if it wasn’t for Deep Sugar. In a great booking coup, U Street Music Hall have secured Solomun to headline on Saturday, with support from local favorites Juan Zapata and Philip Goyette. This is a huge booking for U Hall, and we can tell you right now it’s going to be a packed house. Indeed, this will likely sell out, so make sure you pick up your advanced tickets, which are $20 from Ticketfly. There’s none of your “free before 12am” this time around. If there are any tickets left on the door, it will be $20 all night. 18+, but 18-20 admitted with advanced tickets only. Definitely one worth checking out, and if you want to make a night of it, hit the road to Baltimore when you leave U Hall and catch the last couple of hours of Deep Sugar.

https://www.facebook.com/events/1476134019336130/

Loop & Flash present Daniel Bortz, Raffi, Edo, Basscamp, Philco at Flash

Our final pick for Saturday is Loop & Flash present Daniel Bortz, Raffi & Edo at Flash, with Basscamp & Philco in the Flash Bar. Any party involving the Loop crew is worth checking out, and this looks to be no exception, and Daniel Bortz never disappoints. We recommend you get there early to catch Edo and Raffi before the dance floor gets too crowded. As a further incentive to get there early, admission is FREE before 11pm. Advanced tickets are $9 from Ticketfly, more on the door after 11pm.

https://www.facebook.com/events/1615573842004416/

Sunday Picks

Church Presents Monix at Public Bar

As so we make it to Sunday. If you’re still standing and you’re still in the mood to throw a few shapes on the dance floor, then our top pick is Church at Public Bar. This time around, they’ve got special guest Monix with local support from Tzeech (Composite). It’s sure to be a great night of house and techno on the Public Bar rooftop. The party kicks off at 8pm and runs to 2am, and its free before 10pm, $10 after. This is the one Sunday service you need to attend!

https://www.facebook.com/events/816326091760344/

The NeedlExchange at The Velvet Lounge

Our other pick for Sunday is The NeedlExchange at The Velvet Lounge, with regulars Baronhawk, Bil Todd and Tommy Cornelis behind the decks. Expect an eclectic mix of quality house, disco and everything in between from DC’s finest purveyors of queer dance floor culture. No cover, 21+.

https://www.facebook.com/events/575083252594993

DC House Grooves Weekend Round Up: The Best Underground House and Electronic Music Events in Washington DC November 26 – November 30

Welcome back to a very special Thanksgiving edition of the DC House Grooves Weekend Round Up. You’ll notice that our banner is a little bit different this week:DC House Grooves, along with many other crews in DC, is offering promotional support to the the DanceSafe DC Happy Hour at U Street Music Hall on December 10 with DJs Lisa Frank, Christian Dope and Seba Yuri. All proceeds from the party will go towards supporting the charity DanceSafe, a nonprofit, harm reduction organization promoting health, safety, and educational information on drugs. DC House Grooves fully supports this cause, and we hope our readers can make it to U Street Music Hall on December 10 to dance with us and raise some money. Cover is a $5 donation, which also gets you free entry to Tube & Berger at U Hall that same night. Donate more if you can!

Dance Safe DC Happy Hour Info: https://www.facebook.com/events/1536903816548696

So what about last weekend? We stayed in Thursday night to save our energy for Friday, but we heard Tirzah made an impressive debut at Lost on Thursdays. Wish we could have made it! Definitely one to watch. We would have loved to have made it to Dubtribe Sound System at Flash on Friday to hear Chadwick and Juan Zapata doing their thing in the main room, but instead we headed up to Jimmy Valentine’s to check out Degenerate with Ron Jackson and Darius Twin. We got there early and the crowd was fairly light, but we heard some great sounds from Ron Jackson. Definitely another upcoming local to check out if you get the chance. Next stop was Midnight Project with Jan Krueger, which didn’t disappoint. R&B played yet another very special set, then Jan broke out the vinyl and did his thing. We really loved the underground vibe at the venue, although the place got uncomfortably full for a while there, and the sound system and lighting weren’t quite up to scratch. We love the concept, and we’re looking forward to more from the Midnight Project crew. Add some subs to the sound, make the lighting a little less static, add a cloak room and maybe don’t pack it so full, and you’ll have a close to perfect underground party.

Saturday night we were at Flash Resident’s Night with Navbox, Edo and Philip Goyette on the main floor, and our Body Werk party with Andy Grant and Raffi in the Flash Bar. There was a great crowd at Flash, and Andy and Raffi had the bar jumping all night long. The great news is that we recorded it: you can check it out here:

Our next Body Werk party is in the Flash Bar on Thurdsday December 11 with Andy Grant and Joe L (Bump’n’Grind / Push), then we follow it up on December 13 with our next monthly night at DC9 Night Club, with Andy Grant and Aaron Sparks (Push) in the main room, and Kochi (iNK House / Sugar Shack Recordings) up on the rooftop. Hope you can join us!

Our only regret on Saturday is that we didn’t make it up to the Paradox in Baltimore for Happy Birthday Teddy Douglas feat Crystal Waters and Jasper St. Co. and Basement Boys Reunion, but when we wrapped at Flash, we just couldn’t face the drive to Baltimore. This was a line up to die for, and those that did make it reported that it was an incredible night. Oh well, we can’t make it up to the Paradox every time, and we’re sure there will be many more sick line ups at the Paradox in future!

Ok, so time to dive into the picks for Thanksgiving weekend. Looking a little quiet this weekend, which is probably a good thing after all the craziness last weekend! If you plan on attending an event, click through to the Facebook event page, click Join to let the promoters know you’re in, then click Invite and invite your friends.

Wednesday Picks

Our top pick for Wednesday night is Flashgiving Eve at Flash with Guti (LiVE), Evan Baggs (Kurbits Records | Berlin/NYC), and Sarah Myers on the main floor, with the Cadence Local Showcase in the Flash Bar with DJ Rubble, DJ Illogic, Ramiro / RaveKilla, Rob-One and DJ Seven. Quality deep tech housey business on the main floor, with a killer line up of local drum and bass DJs in the Flash Bar. Sounds like a great combination to us! We recommend getting there early for Sarah Myers’ set. The bar opens at 8pm. Advanced tickets are available from Ticketfly , $10 first release, $15 second release. Still some first release tickets available if you move fast.

https://www.facebook.com/events/391083734378227/

If you’re looking for something a little more intimate with a great local line up, check out Anonymous Thanksgiving with Doktor D, Easy G., Pacific Fur Company, and Ron Jackson at Dr. Clock’s Nowhere Bar in Adams Morgan, which promises a night of house, techno and other electronic music. These guys are passionate about what they do, so expect a varied mix of beats to keep you moving. There’s no cover and no dress code. Come as you are and enjoy a night of deep grooves.

https://www.facebook.com/events/978835785476575/

Digital Harvest: An All Vinyl Funk/House evening at the 8×10, Baltimore

Our final pick for Thanksgiving Eve is Digital Harvest: an All Vinyl Funk / House Evening  in Baltimore, with Mikie Love, Paul Palumbo and Graham Hatke serving up fine funk and house classics fresh from the vinyl. Full support to any event promising all vinyl, all night! We’re not familiar with the full lineup, but Graham Hatke always delivers the goods. Advanced tickets at $10 from MissionTix.

https://www.facebook.com/events/1523530401228520

Thanksgiving Picks

So turns out Flash is open on Thanksgiving, offering us all a chance at escape after a day from the family and work of those Turkey Day calories ; and a great lineup they’ve got too, with Chus & Ceballos and Omar Karim in the main room, with David Merrill in the Flash Bar. Advanced tickets are available for $15 from Ticketfly.

https://www.facebook.com/events/704755599609108/

Friday Picks

So I’m sure after a couple of days with the family, you’ll be itching to get out there and cut loose. Our top pick for Friday  is Back in the Day featuring DJ Dan, Baggadonuts, Buster and Ray Casil at U Street Music Hall. This looks like a proper old school reunion, and promises classic house all night long. It’s free before 11pm for 21+, probably around $10 after. Entry for 18 to 20 with advanced ticket only. Grab your advanced tickets for $10 from Ticketfly. Ray Casil is always worth checking out, so we recommend getting there early.

https://www.facebook.com/events/271796963030274

If some proper soulful house is more to your taste, head up to Zeba Bar for A Musical Obsession pt 2 – The Black Friday Edition with Klubnut resident Ernest Fountain and special guest DJ Mark Moultrie. The Klubnut guys really know their house music, and there’s always a great atmosphere at Zeba.  Best of all, there’s no cover. Music starts at 10pm, and all black attire is requested.

https://www.facebook.com/events/1575936692626670/

Our final pick for Friday is Freaky Friday at Flash with Behrouz returning for his Flash residency, along with returning local boy Prab K and Marko Peli on the main floor, with the familiar sounding #BodyFeel (Coby Jones & Friends) in the Flash Bar. We’ve not heard Behrouz play before, but people seem to like him. We recommend getting there early for Marko and Prab. Advanced tickets are $10 from Ticketfly, more on the door.

https://www.facebook.com/events/600223596766968

Saturday Picks

Top pick for Saturday is Benoit & Sergio (Live) at Flash supported by Solomon Sanchez, with DUSK in the Flash Bar, featuring DJ Soul, Mitch Jr. and Keith Miller. We’re not the biggest fans of  Benoit & Sergio’s “sexualized melodrama”, but Solomon Sanchez is always worth hearing, and the Dusk crew know their house music. Early bird advanced tickets are still available for $5 from Ticketfly, second release are $10, third release are $15, more on the door. The faster you move, the cheaper it is.

https://www.facebook.com/events/1568028773420473

Our next pick for Saturday is Eighteenth Street Lounge with Philip Goyette and Chris Nitti in the Gold Room, Caleb L’Etoile and Remote Ctrl in the Main Room and Disco Odyssey with Farid and Bonkerz out on the patio. Philip Goyette and Chris Nitti make for a great combination in the Gold Room, and with great things happening in the Main Room and on the Patio, you’ve got plenty to choose from all under one roof. Always a drinking crowd at ESL, so a great option if you’re getting your booze on on Saturday.

https://www.facebook.com/18thStLounge

Our final, somewhat hesitant, pick for Saturday is Glow Presents Deep Dish supported by Rob Garza from Thievery Corporation at Echostage. We wouldn’t usually cover the sort of EDM nonsense that goes on at Echostage, but Deep Dish playing together again in their home town is kind of a big deal, albeit not particularly underground. We used to be the biggest fans of Deep Dish from the early days of their blockbuster remix of Hideaway by De’lacy through their releases on Deep Dish Recordings, Tribal and Yoshitoshi, right up to Stay Gold on Deconstruction, and in the mid to late nineties, we would regularly go see them in the back room of State of the Union on U Street. They lost us when they started remixing Madonna, Dido and the Rolling Stones and winning Grammys etc. We live in hope that they’ll return to their pure house roots, but sadly we’re guessing Ali and Sharam will likely deliver a mix of generic prog house and bland big room techno. Combine that with the soulless vacuum that is Echostage, and we predict a recipe for disappointment. Maybe worth it if you want the Echostage experience with something not quite so offensive as their usual musical line up. Advanced tickets are a steep $30 + fees from Wanttickets. 18+. If you decide to go, please send us a full report.

https://www.facebook.com/events/1502035410042934/

Sunday Picks

Wrapping up the weekend, our top pick for Sunday is Church a Sunday Affair on the Pubic Bar rooftop, the winter season rooftop party from the same crew that brings us Sunglass Sundays. This week they’ve got Malphunktion & DJ Amp playing a 4 hour set, with local support from LJ MTX, Juan Zapata and Ramiro. We had a lot of fun at Church a couple of weeks ago, and we expect this week’s edition to be no different. We always love a line up that features Juan Zapata closing out the night! Free until 6pm, $10 after, although you’ll get in for $5 if you can show you’ve liked Church and Sunglass Sundays on Facebook. Be there for Juan’s set; you won’t regret it.

https://www.facebook.com/events/1490534307896923/

For our last pick for Sunday, get yourself down to Eighteenth Street Lounge to close out your Thanksgiving Weekend with some proper soulful house at Sam Burns’ Underground Soul Solution in the Gold Room, with Bil Todd in the Main Room. They’ll have the usual $5 drinks specials from 9pm to 11pm, and a great crowd of heads closing out their weekend to Sam’s exceptional selections.

https://www.facebook.com/18thStLounge

That wraps it up for our Thanksgiving Weekend picks, so let’s look at the full listings of all the best underground deep house and electronic music events in Washington DC from Wednesday to Sunday. While we’ve picked out the events we think are best, there are so many more events to choose from, so make sure you scroll through the full list. DC House Grooves Weekend Round Up Halloween Preview

So Halloween is fast approaching, and there are some great parties lined up for to keep all of DC’s ghouls, ghosts and people of the night dancing through the weekend. Since everyone will be going out next weekend, there’s a high likelihood some parties will sell out; indeed some already have. Thanks to a great suggestion from Sarah Myers, we’ve pulled together a preview of the best underground house and electronic music events in Washington DC for the Halloween weekend from Thursday to Saturday. We’ve included only those events that have been made public so far and are on our radar. I’m sure more will be announced closer to the weekend, and of course we will publish the usual round up next week. If you plan on going to any of the events where advanced tickets are available, make sure you scoop them up ASAP. In particular, Jimmy Valentine’s Halloween Fright Night and Last House on the Left at Tropicalia are expected to sell out completely ahead of time. The Jimmy Valentine’s Halloween party sells out every year, and our sources tell us this year will be no exception, and we’ve just heard tickets for Last House on the Left are flying off the shelves. Meso Creso presents Down the Rabbit Hole has already sold out, but if you get there early on the night, you might get lucky. We’ve included handy links for ordering advanced tickets for each event where they are available.

So what are our top picks for Halloween? Here are our picks:

Thursday October 30:

Uneasy Hiding Places at Dr Clock’s Nowhere Bar

followed by

Lost on Thursdays: Leather & Fur 3rd Annual Lost Halloween Bash at Lost Society

Friday October 31:

Jimmy Valentine’s Halloween Fright Night

followed by

Last House on the Left at Tropicalia

Saturday November 1:

Meso Creso presents: Down the Rabbit Hole – A Trip Through Wonderland! (if you can secure a ticket!)

Failing that, Derrick Carter with Juan Zapata, Joe L. at U Street Music Hall

Those are our picks, so on to the Halloween preview listings. If you plan on attending an event, make sure you click through to the event page and click Join, and don’t forget to buy your advanced tickets, particularly if you’re planning on going Jimmy Valentine’s Halloween Fright Night or Last House on the Left.

So there we have it: Halloween weekend sorted! Don’t sleep on you advanced tickets; you don’t want to be left out in the cold.  While we like to think of ourselves as omniscient beings with knowledge of all things house music in DC, the truth is we don’t know everything, so if we have missed something that you think should be included, please message us through the DC House Grooves Facebook Page.

See you on the dance floor!

DC House Grooves Weekend Round Up: The Best Underground House and Electronic Music Events in Washington DC October 23 – October 26

Welcome back to the DC House Grooves Weekend Round Up. If you’re anything like us, you just can’t wait for the weekend, so its time to start figuring out where to get your dance floor fix. Yet again there’s an amazing range of events in and around DC, so check out our picks, and don’t forget to look through all the listings. There’s so much going on, you’re sure to find something to get you grooving.

Last House On The Left at TropicaliaBefore we get into things, a quick word about a party we’re involved with for Halloween. There are a ton of Halloween parties on Friday, October 31 (we know all too well.. we’ve already prepared the listings!). But when your Halloween party is over, where are you going to go? Well we’ve got just the thing for all the ghouls, ghosts and lost souls needing somewhere to get their groove on during the early hours of Saturday. The Last House on the Left is a collaboration between local label Slope Traxx, Deep Secrets, DC House Grooves and Nomad, and promises to be the ultimate Halloween after party, with an incredible lineup of local talent, including Chris Nitti & Lisa Frank (ROAM), R&B (Deep Secrets), Andy Grant (DC House Grooves / Body Werk) and Jubilee & Ramirez (Slope Traxx). The party is at Tropicalia, kicks off at 3am and runs to 12pm.  This one is sure to be a road block, so make sure you grab your pre-sale tickets; they’ll cost more at the door.

Advanced tickets for Last House on the Left at Tropicalia

OK, so what about last weekend? We didn’t make it out at all, choosing instead to stay home, get stuff done, and get some rest. Wonderfully productive, but it has us looking forward to some serious dance floor action this weekend. Based on reports from our network of intrepid reporters, the high points last weekend were Lost on Thursdays with Jubilee and Ramirez doing their thing and Cadence presents Ladies of the Underground Takeover ft DJ Rap at Flash on Thursdays. Friday night saw Apollonia take over the decks all night at U Hall to celebrate their Tour à Tour album launch, and word has it they had the place jumping all night long. Meanwhile up at Zeba Bar, Funk the Police: Get down to get your rights up! was a huge success, with Meegs‘ and Juan Zapata‘s sets being highlights. The words “killing it” and “crushing it” were getting thrown around, we hear. Saturday afternoon and evening was all about ROAM VI, which we wish we could have made it to. We had to make do with all the wonderful pics on Facebook. If only we could have tuned in… next time, broadcast it, ROAMers! Down at Flash, H-Foundation took over the main floor and rocked the place. Another one we regret not attending. Hoping to catch them next time they are in town. Didn’t hear much from the Sunday parties, but I’m sure a good time was had by all. If you attend a great party this coming weekend that you think we should be reporting on, please send us a full report through the DC House Grooves Facebook page. We want to do our bit to spread the word about great parties, but we can’t attend them all!

Yeah, yeah, we know. Too much chat when you want to hear about this week’s picks. Well before we get into that, we just wanted to give a quick shout out to Mixology, which is going on in Baltimore all this week and through the weekend. Mixology is a collaborative movement involving a whole bunch of Baltimore based crews to celebrate dance music and culture, with nightly parties, workshops, demonstrations, roundtable discussions, networking events and so on. Sounds really cool, and is 100% supported by DC House Grooves. We have listed a few of the major Mixology events in this week’s Round Up, but there’s way too much for us to cover here, so please head over to their website for more info:

Mixology Baltimore

Ok then, let’s get on with this week’s picks. If you plan on attending an event, click through to the Facebook event page, click Join to let the promoters know you’re in, then click Invite and invite your friends.

Thursday Picks

First up for Thursday is our regular pick for your trip home from work, DJ Earic Patten’s Elektrik Metro House Vibes Live Mix Sessions w/ Special Guest Captain Smackdown (Los Angeles, CA). Always a great choice for rush hour listening.  The show kicks off at 5pm ET and runs until 7pm ET.

Tune in:

Top pick for Thursday night out on the town is Lost on Thursdays: Don’t Be Sober In October feat. Randall M. (tINI and the gang)  & Sarah Myers at Lost Society. This is a great opportunity to catch an international guest without any cover charge, and the Lost on Thursdays crowd always makes for a great dance floor vibe. We recommend getting there early to catch local favorite Sarah Myers, as her sets are always a treat.  No cover, 21+. Free glass of champagne for the ladies before 12pm, and all the usual drinks specials.

https://www.facebook.com/events/1562812657265479

Our next pick for Thursday is  over at Flash, where Bob Moses are headlining the main floor, with local support from former DC House Grooves Radio Show guest, Raffi, and Fort Fairmont down in the Flash Bar. We were lucky enough to catch Bob Moses last year at Dirty Bar, performing their unique act, combining live music and vocals. They will be performing a 90 minute live set at Flash, with an opening set by Raffi of Loop DC. We encourage you to get there early for Raffi. He’s one of our favorite locals!  Advanced tickets are currently $8 on Ticketfly, more on the door.

https://www.facebook.com/events/277567155771955/

Our final pick for Thursday is Disco Made Me Do It Edition V at The Wonderland Ballroom in Columbia Heights, with Ferdinand and the Ghost, Mr Bonkerz, Ypset and Jacq Jill. We haven’t made it to any of the Disco Made Me Do It events yet, but it’s great to see events going down in neighborhoods away from the U St / Dupont / Adams Morgan bubble, and this looks like a great local lineup. If you attend, we’d love to hear what you think. No cover, 21+.

https://www.facebook.com/events/1485062205085166/

Friday Picks

Top pick for Friday is  Butch, Navbox, Chris Nitti, #Bodyfeel (90s Nick, Coby Jones, PK) at Flash. We’re not too familiar with Butch, but I’m sure with Visionquest and Desolat releases on his resumé, he’ll know his way around a set of decks. We’re choosing this as our top pick due to the local support from Chris Nitti and Navbox, who always deliver the goods. You really want to hear these guys give the Flash sound system a work out. Down in the Flash Bar, there’s a new party #Bodyfeel, with PK, Coby Jones and 90s Nick, which promises to be a lot of fun. Advanced tickets are $8 from Ticketfly, more on the door, and there’s a free drink with admission before 11pm. 21+. Get there early for Nitti and Navbox!

https://www.facebook.com/events/502118386590203

Selectors: A Night of Music Curated by Boss Ross and Measax at Dr. Clock’s Nowhere Bar

Our other pick for Friday night is a really interesting sounding event at Dr. Clock’s Nowhere Bar, where former DC House Grooves radio show guest Boss Ross, alongside Measax, will be carefully selecting tunes from a whole range of genres, including dub, house, techno, random acid jazz, an African rhythm record, and whatever takes their fancy, for your listening pleasure. These cats know their stuff, so it promises to be a musically diverse night. Definitely worth checking out if you want something a bit different this Friday. No cover, 21+, lots of drinks specials.

https://www.facebook.com/events/289532464578294

Saturday Picks

What Had Happened Was… with Tim Jackson & Andy Grant at Jimmy Valentine’s Lonely Hearts Club

Our top pick for Saturday is Tim Jackson‘s monthly party What Had Happened Was... at Jimmy Valentine’s Lonely Hearts Club. This month’s guest is none other than our very own Andy Grant, who will be joining Tim to spin club classics from the nineties and noughties. Remember those big tunes that you used to hear on the dance floor of Tracks and Nation? That’s the sweet spot Tim and Andy will be shooting for. They’ll be leaving all the new stuff at home, and playing all those great tunes that used to make you sweat back in the day. No cover, 21+. We hope to see you on the dance floor!

https://www.facebook.com/events/861819697170236/

Bump ‘n Grind w/ DJ Nav, Resonance & Refugee

Next up for Saturday is Bump’n’Grind at Zeba Bar with resident Refugee, Resonance and local DJ / Producer and former DC House Grooves Radio Show guest DJ Nav spinning nothing but vinyl all night long, and if we know Nav, he’ll be serving up nothing but the finest garage. We’ve been loving the Bump’n’Grind parties, and you can guarantee a great vibe on the dance floor over there at Zeba Bar. Definitely a great option if you’re in the neighborhood.

https://www.facebook.com/events/330568157129522

ESL Saturdays: Rhythm & Culture presents Juan Zapata and Charles Martin

Our next pick for Saturday is Eighteenth Street Lounge, where the uber talented Juan Zapata will be headlining in the Gold Room, ably supported by Charles Martin. That’s enough to convince us, but with Tommy Cornelis going back to back with Trev-ski in the Main Room and Mr. Bonkerz out on the patio, you’ve got  enough variety to keep you dancing all night! Our recommendation: head straight for the Gold Room and get down to Charles & Juan.

https://www.facebook.com/18thStLounge

Bliss: Will Eastman, DJ Lisa Frank at U Street Music Hall

Our final pick for Saturday is Will Eastman‘s monthly Bliss party at U Street Music Hall. This month, ROAM’s DJ Lisa Frank will be joining will in the DJ booth, for a pairing that promises to deliver surprises all night long. Bliss parties are always a lot of fun, and this one promises to be no exception. Free before 12am for 21+, free with wristband/ticket stub from Sbtrkt for 21+, otherwise $10.

https://www.facebook.com/events/971800219513350/

Sunday Picks

The House That U Built – Closing Finale Teaser Reunion Party – Part 1 Of 1!

And so on to Sunday, where things are starting to die down a bit now the weather is getting colder and the days are getting shorter. Never fear, however, because the rooftop party season isn’t quite done yet! Our top pick for Sunday is the season finale of The House That U Built, and they’ve teamed up with our friends at Eighty Eight DC and Forward DC to bring you something extra special to close out the season. As usual, there’s an incredible lineup of locals, including Vanniety Kills, Taiga, Sarah MyersKeenan Orr and Dave Martin, but for their grand finale they’ve got some super special surprise guests. We’ve done out best to try and get the scoop on who these surprise guests are, but our sources in the Forward and The House That U Built camps are remaining tight lipped! You’ll have to get yourself to the Dirty Bar rooftop on Sunday to find out. We’ll certainly be there, and we predict a family reunion vibe as the regular crowd turns out to see the season out with a bang. The party kicks off at 4pm. No cover, drinks specials between 4pm and 6pm.

https://www.facebook.com/events/310543002482317/

ESL Sundays

Our other pick for Sunday is ESL Sundays, where Ken Lazee from U Street Music Hall will be joining Sam ‘The Man’ Burns for Underground Soul Solution in the Gold Room, with Farid in the Main Room and The Metaphysical out on the patio. As always, a great Sunday lineup for ESL. Drinks specials from 9pm to 11pm.

https://www.facebook.com/18thStLounge

That’s it for this week’s picks, so let’s move on to the full listings of all the best underground deep house and electronic music events in and around Washington DC from Thursday to Sunday. Remember to click through to the Facebook event pages for more details, and don’t forget to click Join and invite your friends if you plan on attending.
