Huge thanks to everyone who came out last Friday to kick off my birthday celebrations with me and Katrina Mir at Jimmy Valentine’s. I really appreciate you all making the effort! I, for one, had an amazing time playing records and shuffling around the dance floor 🙂 We’ll be celebrating my birthday in earnest this Thursday night May 2, when I’ll be joining Jubilee and Ramirez behind the decks at Playlist at Eighteenth Street Lounge. Packing some amazing tunes, it’s going to be a beautiful evening, so let’s have some fun on the patio! Hoping to see some DC House Grooves readers on the dance floor.
Just a quick post this week, as I need to get all my music organized for tomorrow. Lots of great stuff happening this week at all the usual spots, Eddie C at Eighteenth Street Lounge on Saturday being the highlight, plus a whole load of cool happenings around Catharsis on the Mall. If you’re up for something different, head over to the National Mall and check it out. I’m not particularly in the know about Catharsis, but between Hearts Collective at the Asgard Dome and Sunset and Chill at Catharsis on the Mall amongst other things, looks like there’s plenty to keep you grooving.
Before I get to this week’s listings, here’s a great little slice of after hours acid, techno, house & breaks from our very own Katrina Mir. Something to listen to as you plan your weekend dance floor strategy.
Here’s this week’s listings, featuring all the best underground house and electronic music events on my radar in and around Washington DC, Thursday through Sunday. Facebook users can click the link at the top of each section to view the list of event pages for each day. Hope to see you at Eighteenth Street Lounge Thursday night, and make sure you check back next week for info on all the best underground house and electronic music events in DC over the weekend.
Here we go with another weekly post featuring all the best events in Washington DC. Nearly five years of weekly posts, and we’re still going strong! DC House Grooves coming in hot at Eighteenth Street Lounge on Thursday, with Katrina Mir joining Jubilee & Ramirez behind the decks for Playlist. With a fresh delivery of wax in her record bag, she’s not planning on taking any prisoners, so do yourself a favor and head to ESL at 10pm to catch one of DC’s finest up and coming talents doing what she does best. Always a revelation when Katrina Mir gets behind the decks.
Friday night, I recommend checking out Club Cuttlefish at Ten Tigers Parlour with DC Voices, Control Freq and DJ Freeze, or perhaps Minesies with Che & Baronhawk at Jimmy Valentine’s. Flash also looks on point, with Cap, N/UM and Jus Nowhere in the main room, J Swink and Charles D in the Green Room and Philco & Tommy Cornelis in the Flash Bar.
Saturday night, kick off your evening at Flash to catch the mighty XDB making his Flash debut alongside Galcher Lustwerk and Navbox. In the Green Room, Benoit & Luke hold things down open to close, with Steve Seagull, Throe and Mike Harvey in the bar.
Sunday afternoon, Sunday Love at Flash and District Inferno with Sam Burns at El Techo are both worth checking out, then on Sunday night, all roads lead to Eighteenth Street Lounge for ESL Sunday with Sam Burns’Underground Soul Solution and Good Buddies with Samantha Francesca and Philco. Always the best way to close out your weekend!
Before this week’s listings, a little bit of music for you. Here’s the recoding on last week’s DC House Grooves show on Underground Quality Radio with me, Andy Grant, Katrina Mir and Ramirez. SoundCloud and YouTube embeds below. Proper underground grooves served up fresh from the wax.
Tune in to the next DC House Grooves Show at 10pm ET on Saturday April 27. You know it makes sense!
Here’s my full list of Top Picks for the weekend, featuring all the best underground house and techno events in Washington DC this weekend, Thursday through Sunday, and even a couple of drum and bass events for good measure. Facebook users can click the link at the top of each section to see the list of event pages for each day. If you find these weekly updates useful, please help spread the work by sharing with your friends, and come back next week for your weekly guide to all the good stuff on the dance floor in Washington DC.
Not quite back in the saddle just yet, so don’t get too excited. Some great events happening this weekend, so I figured I’d knock out a quick post highlighting the best of the bunch. Here’s a quick run down: Thursday night, I’ll be joining Katrina Mir behind the decks at Preview in the Green Room at Flash for some happy hour grooves. Looks like it’s going to be a scorcher, so join us from 6pm for some freshly made frosty adult beverages and quality grooves and watch the sun set over DC from the Flash rooftop. After we wrap at Flash, we’ll be heading over to Eighteenth Street Lounge for Playlist with Jubilee, Ramirez and this week’s special guest Narko.
On Friday night, Katrina Mir joins DJ Meegs, Jett Chandon and Vanniety Kills behind the decks for the latest edition of Ladies of the Underground at Ten Tigers Parlour. That’s one serious all XX lineup! proper grooves all night long on Ten Tigers’ quality Martin Audio sound system. Other great options on Friday night are Navbox‘s birthday celebrations at Flash, with another amazing Friday line up on all three floors: Alexi Delano joins Navbox in the main room, while in the Green Room Martín Miguel and Heights throw down for Better Listen Sessions, and in the bar M Vaughn joins Chris Kennedy for Assembly. Happy birthday Navid! Thank you for everything you do to support the local scene here in DC. Over at U Street Music Hall, it’s all locals all night long with another stellar showcase of homegrown talent featuring the uber-talented Rush Plus boys and the always outstanding 1432R DJs Sami, SuYung & Dawit. Great to see another all local line up at U Hall on a Friday night! Hope to see many more.
Over at Jimmy Valentine’s Lonely Hearts Club on Saturday night, there’s a reunion of the Drivesafe Crew, featuring Dan Soda, Pat Casil, Ray Casil & Sketti, back behind the decks together for the first time in god knows how long! It’s sure to be an emotional night full of laughs, smiles, perhaps a few tears, and of course quality beats. Best of all, there’s no cover all night. Saturday also brings return of Deep Sugar to U Street Music Hall. The Paradox may be gone, but Deep Sugar lives on, with residents UltraNaté, Lisa Moody and guest opener Wayne Davis working that Deep Sugar magic all night long. With a bus of Deep Sugar regulars heading down from Baltimore, I can guarantee the vibe will be strong!
Sunday brings several great options to close out the weekend. The always excellent Sunday Love in the Green Room at Flash features Rodriguez Jr live, with support from residents Solomon Sanchez & Sarah Myers, plus Tony Smooth and DJ Bazza. Another great option for rooftop grooving is Chasing Sundays at Public Bar with local here Saeed Younan at the controls, with support from Fred Mas, Alex Haje and Pierre Reynolds. Last, but by no means least, ESL Sunday features Sam Burns‘ weekly residency, along with another edition of Hold Tight featuring HOT COFFEE, Martín Miguel and Adrian Collazo. Not to be missed!
I’ve included flyers and event links for all these events below. There’s plenty more going on this weekend beyond my picks below, so keep your eyes and ears open. Also, it’s going to be scorcher, so make sure to rehydrate! Not sure when I’ll be back with the full Weekend Round Up, but I’ll do my best to bring you the highlights while I’m on my break. See you on the dance floor!
Thursday July 13
Preview Happy Hour fr. Andy Grant & Katrina Mir at Flash
Kicking off this week’s Weekend Round Up with news of Flash‘s new rooftop Sunday party Sunday Love, which kicks off this weekend in the Green Room with a killer lineup featuring a live set from Christian Löffler, supported by local dream team Solomon Sanchez, Sarah Myers and Chris Nitti. It ain’t just spring that’s kicking off early this year; rooftop party season is getting a head start too! I reached out to the good people at Flash to find out a bit more about Sunday Love, and here’s the deal: Sunday Love is a new series of all day parties on Flash‘s rooftop (The Green Room) which will feature a line up of locals followed by a sunset set from a big name headliner. It aims to showcase smaller acts that you’d traditionally see on the club level at Flash on Fridays and Saturdays, providing a platform to up and coming artists operating more on the fringes of dance music. Kudos to Flash for taking steps to bring interesting and innovative artists to DC, whilst also supporting our strong local talent. I can’t wait to see what Sunday Love brings over the summer months. Here are the events announced so far:
March 12: Sunday Love: Christian Löffler with Solomon Sanchez, Sarah Myers and Chris Nitti
Click through and join the events, mark them in your calendar, and get ready for some fun in the sunshine on the rooftop!
Sadly nothing new on the Meet the Locals Podcast front this week. I guess I need to get out there and start stalking people for contributions. Who wants to contribute episode #47? Get in touch and send me a mix! One DJ I’ve been hoping will contribute to the Meet the Locals series is Partial Magic‘s Ben Jenkins. No luck just yet, so as a consolation, here’s a recent mix he did for someone else. You know when a mix comes out guns blazing with Norm Talley‘s Beats on Broadway that you’re in for a wild ride, and this is one mix that delivers on it’s early promise; an hour of proper underground house music with a track list to die for. Can’t wait to hear Ben‘s mix for DC House Grooves (hint hint!)
Lots of serious business out and about this weekend. Thursday alone will have you making some difficult choices: Ten Tigers Parlour features Regrets Only : Lost Reunion with former Lost on Thursdays residents DJ Lisa Frank, Chris Nitti and Hakob at the controls, and former Lost host Denis Bejan keeping the party on track. Those of us who remember (or don’t remember!) those halcyon Thursday nights at Lost Society followed by those painful Fridays at work will know the drill. Over at Eighteenth Street Lounge, Meegs joins Jubilee and Ramirez behind the decks at another edition of essential weekly party Playlist, while at Flash, suburban crew Transit take over the Green Room for Preview, followed by Smallville‘s Lawrence and local favorite Solomon Sanchez on the club level. U Street Music Hall is also worth checking out, with Way Out West headlining with support from Tony Smooth.
Friday night, Flash is my top pick, with three floors of quality underground sounds featuring Telefon TelAviv,Baikal and Edo on the club level, TeamZapata all night long in the Green Room, and Better Listen Sessions with Peter Croce, Martín Miguel & Heights in the bar. If you really want to get down with the heads, though, head up to The Looking Glass Lounge in Petworth for Petworth Funk with Mike Petillo, Kenny M and Trev-ski. Always fun times at Petworth Funk!
Another massive line up at Flash on Saturday night, with Melchior Productions Ltd headlining the club level with support from local heavy hitters Navbox and Jubilee, while in the Green Room, DJ Nav has assembled a stellar line up of veritable super heroes for the latest edition of The Uptown House Experience: Joe L, Trev-ski, Boss Ross and the man DJ Nav himself will be taking the rooftop to school, while Nick Flynn, Jericho, PerShan and DJ Swink keep the bar jumping all night long. Another major pick for Saturday night is Deep Sugar Skyfall at The Paradox with Ultra Naté, Wayne Davis and Lisa Moody. That’s right! Deep Sugar is still going at The Paradox, but not for much longer! If you need your Deep Sugar fix, make sure you make the most of it while it lasts. While the wrecking ball was delayed a bit, it will soon be flattening The Paradox to make way for a new Hammerjacks, and once it’s gone, it’s gone!
I’ve already mentioned Sunday Love at Flash on Sunday, but another great option for proper underground sounds on Sunday afternoon is the latest edition of Daytime Discothèque featuring Folamour, Mazi R, Martín Miguel & Adrian Collazo. Quality vibes all round. You’ll need to make sure you pick up your advanced tickets, though, as there’ll be no tickets at the door. $15 first release tickets are still available if you move fast. Wherever you choose to groove on Sunday afternoon, close out the weekend at Eighteenth Street Lounge, featuring Sam “The Man” Burns, Jeyone & Seany Ranks, and the latest edition of Good Buddies featuring The NeedleXchange and Good Buddies‘ very own Philco. TNX on the patio is sure to be a treat!
That’s my highlights for this week, but that’s just scratching the surface! Here are the full listings for this weekend, including all my top picks Thursday through Sunday. See you on the dance floor!
