Ok here we go with my first proper post of 2019, not counting last week’s phoned in edition. Another solid weekend of dance floor vibes here in the District, with quality events to keep you grooving, from Thursday night right through to the early hours of Monday morning.
Highlights this weekend include Playlist with Jubilee & Ramirez at Eighteenth Street Lounge on Thursday night, then on Friday night, I’d recommend checking out Lovers and Justin Miller at Wild Days at the Eaton Hotel, and while you’re there, heading downstairs to catch Joe L at Allegory. They’ve got a nice looking line up taking shape in the coming months between Wild Days and Allegory, with plenty of local DJs representing, so if you haven’t checked it out yet, I highly recommend it. Also looking good on Friday is DJ Technics with Djoser at Jimmy Valentine’s Lonely Hearts Club. Always a good vibes at Jimmy’s!
Saturday night, all you house heads should look no further that U Street Music Hall, where the Deep Sugar crew take over once again, with Ultra Naté and Lisa Moody working their magic with support from Keenan Orr. Always good vibes with the Deep Sugar crew!
For those of you of a techno persuasion, SEQUENCE.446 hosts I Hate Models with Katie Rex and local support from Jett Chandon and Juana working the Grand Ancestor Sound System at a DC warehouse location. Always a great crowd at Sequence events, and their zero tolerance policy to any bullshit guarantees a hassle free night on the dance floor. Entry is by advanced ticket only, so make sure you grab yours before they sell out.
As you’ve no doubt predicted already, Sunday’s highlight is Eighteenth Street Lounge, with Sam Burns weekly residency in the Gold Room, The Metaphysical in the Main Room, and Hold Tight with Martín Miguel and Super Tuff records head honcho M. Vaughan on the patio. Quality deep vibes across three dance floors to ease you into next week!
Before I get to my full list of Top Picks for the weekend, here is episode #74 of the DC House Grooves Meet the Locals Podcast from Nocturnal Wax, featuring 2+ hours of quality house grooves. Check it out, and catch Nocturnal Wax spinning on Studio 96 every Friday night at 8PM Eastern on WERA 96.7FM in the DC area. We’re always looking for new mixes for the podcast, so please reach out to me through the DC House Grooves Facebook Page if you’re interested in submitting a mix.
OK, here’s my full list of Top Picks for this weekend, Thursday through Sunday. Click / tap the link at the top of each section to see the full list of even pages over on Facebook, or check the flyers and Google the details. See you on the dance floor!
Katrina Mir and I are heading out of town for a gig this weekend, so I was planning on making good on my decision to take a break for a few weekends and not post anything. Indeed, as recently as last night, I made a start on compiling a Top Picks only post, but when I realized how many amazing events were happening this weekend, it was just too much, so I gave up and told myself it just wasn’t happening this week. Fast forward to today, and despite my decision not to do anything this weekend, it just kinda happened. So much goodness, I just couldn’t let it go undocumented! I mean, take a look at the list below. This is just my Top Picks of all the best events happening this weekend, and there’s more than enough to keep anyone busy! Highlights include Playlist with Jubilee & Ramirez at Eighteenth Street Lounge and Nightflight with Symmetricalon Thursday, then Sequence with Perc, Katie Rex, Damon Bradley and Steve Kirn on Friday. On Saturday, things get crazy!
Saturday afternoon, Detroit descends on DC, with The Detroit Connect at Flash featuring Norm Talley, Keith Worthy, Daniel Andres and Benoit, while over at The Glorious Health Club patio, The NeedleXchange crew host longtime DC House Grooves favorite Octo Octa for an evening of glorious underground sounds. Saturday also brings another edition of Jandro‘s Reflections at Jimmy Valentine’s Lonely Hearts Club, featuring another super solid all-local lineup: Juana, Edo, Throe and Jandro himself. The last Reflections was a super fun time, so this comes highly recommended. For afters, all roads lead to Uncle Benny’s Afterhours Express, featuring very special guests from Detroit alongside Sticky Fingers Collective‘s Samantha Francesca and Benoit. Seek and you will find! If you’re planning on staying in on Saturday but still want to hear some great tunes, tune in to the DC House GroovesShow #05 on Underground Quality Radio .This week’s show will feature myself, Andy Grant, and Katrina Mir, and will be broadcast live from an event in Indianapolis. Two hours of quality underground grooves for the discerning listener. This week’s show kicks off an hour later than usual at 11pm ET.
Sunday brings another edition of Sunday Love in the Green Room at Flash, featuring Guti live with support from Mina b2b Alex Eljaiek and Gilléad-Gaari, then all roads lead to Eighteenth Street Lounge for Sam Burns’ weekly residency and Sundays RooftopDetroit All Starsedition featuring Keith Worthy, Daniel Andres and Benoit. Make sure you wish Benoita big happy birthday! While it sucks that Katrina and I will be missing most of the good stuff this weekend, we’re going to beast it back from Indianapolis and head straight to ESL to close out the weekend with the Sundays Rooftop crew! Whatever you do, wherever you go, have an amazing time, stay hydrated, and let the promoters and DJs know DC House Grooves sent you 🙂
Oh, and before I sign off, here’s episode #55 of the DC House Grooves Meet the Locals Podcast, a 2 hour mix I recorded for my road trip this weekend. An all vinyl mix featuring mostly new cuts not available on digital from artists including Ada Kaleh, Traumer, Varhat, Janeret, Joey Anderson, Adam Strömstedt, Octo Octa, Lowris, Molly, Hostom, Dixia Sirong, The Black Pony Orchestra, Patrice Scott and Terrence Parker, which really showcases my style well, taking you on a two hour journey through a range of vibes. You may find some tracks challenging and inaccessible at first, but stick with it and you will be rewarded 🙂
