Another amazing line up of underground events happening this weekend as Washington DC celebrates Pride 2019! Before I get into this week’s Top Picks, a quick mention of a couple of exciting events coming up in the next few weeks. First up, on Saturday June 15 we celebrate 50 (!) episodes of the DC House Grooves Show on Underground Quality Radio, and to mark the occasion we’ve got none other than DC house music legend Sam “The Man” Burns joining me, Andy Grant, Ramirez and Katrina Mir in the DC House Grooves studio as our very special guest. We’re honored to be hosting Sam in the studio, and we can’t wait to hear what he’s got lined up for us. Check the event page for more info, and set a reminder to tune in over on YouTube.
Speaking of the DC House Grooves Show, did you check out episode #049 last Saturday. If you missed the show, you can check out the stream below, or listen to the audio on SoundCloud. Saturday’s show was chock full of quality wax fresh from our recent trip to Detroit. Some quality deepness right there!
Another date to mark in your calendar is the following Saturday June 22, which sees the return of Late Night Mischief with a fantastic line up featuring DJ Aakmael, DJ Nav and a closing set from our very own Katrina Mir! Late Night Mischief parties always deliver a thick vibe, and with DJ Nav setting the tone, DJ Aakmael taking things to the next level, and Katrina Mir keeping you grooving until sunrise, I can guarantee this one’s gonna be just a little bit special. Early bird tickets are available now for just $10, which is steal for a line up of this caliber. Remember, no tickets on the door, so you might as well buy yours now.
Here are my Top Picks for Pride weekend, Thursday through Sunday. Just between you and me, I’ve been seriously considering stopping these weekly posts, as they are taking longer and longer to compile. I started doing this weekly post to give something back to the community, but what I really want to be doing is making and playing music, which obviously requires a lot of time, too. With my day job and a house full of teenagers to look after, something has got to give if I want to meet all my goals. If you really want to know, the reason I keep these weekly posts going is that every single time I go out, someone approaches me . and tells me how DC House Grooves helped them find quality music in DC’s underground community. As long as this blog is helping people find their way to the good shit, I’ll keep things going. I just need to find ways to reduce how long it takes to compile each week, and if that means cutting back on the number of events I include each week, then so be it. There’s just so much going on these days that it takes way too long each week to include everything, so moving forward, I’m just not going to even try being comprehensive. I’m just going to list the events that I think are worth your time, and I’m just going to include the flyer images. You can figure the rest out by yourself. If you’re a promoter and you don’t see your event listed, don’t get mad! The best way to make sure I include your event next time is to make it easy for me and send me the flyer for your event before Wednesday, week of. Don’t make me do all the work. Ok, rant over. Here’s are my Top Pick for Pride weekend. Everything listed below is worth your time. See you on the dance floor!
Busy weekend ahead! It’s that time of year again when we celebrate Pride in the nation’s capital, and again there’s an amazing selection of quality underground events celebrating Pride here in DC. I’ve included all the events on my radar in this week’s post, but if you want the best insight on underground Pride events from someone who really knows what’s what, check out Pride Underground 2017 by our queer correspondent, TNX‘s Tommy Cornelis. Everything you need to know about the best underground events at this year’s Pridecelebrations.
As usual, you’ll find all my Top Picks for the weekend from Thursday through Sunday below, along with full listings of all the best events. I feel like I’m handing out the Top Picks like candy this weekend, but they’re all well deserved! Some really good shit going down in our city! You can catch me at Flash on Friday night along with my DC House Grooves partner in crime Katrina Mir, holding things down in the bar all night long. We’ve been holed up at DC House Grooves HQ for the last few weeks honing our craft, and we’re really looking forward to playing out again. Friday night at Flash is going to be one for the true house heads, with Sistrum Recordings label boss Patrice Scott headlining the main room with support from Aakmael and HOT COFFEE, and another edition of Arts & Sciences in the Green Room with Snad & Taiga. Serious business across all three floors!
On Saturday night, Katrina and I will be joined by Ramirez for episode #002 of the DC House Grooves Radio Show on Jus-Ed‘s Underground Quality Radio from 10pm ET. Episode #001 two weeks ago was quite a journey, and we’re looking forward to taking it to new heights this week. Tune in from 10pm ET over at Underground Quality Radio, or Like the Underground Quality Facebook Pageand look out for our multi camera Facebook Live feed. The perfect pre-game for your Saturday night!
After the show Katrina Mir and I will be heading into town to Dupont Circle to represent DC House Grooves spinning a 2am set at Cannabis Pride All Nighter. Starting at 9am Saturday and running for 24 hours straight until 9am Sunday morning, the Cannabis Pride All Nighter will feature sets from a huge list of local DC favorites including DJ Nav, Jett Chandon, C-Dubz, StrikeStone,Panch, Djoser, Grand Ancestor, Team Zapata, Samantha Francesca, HOT COFFEE, Vanniety Kills and DJ Meegs. Catch me and Katrina Mir from 2am, right after Samantha Francesca and HOT COFFEE of the Sticky Fingers Collective.
For the vinyl heads out there, make sure you make time on Saturday afternoon to head over to Future Times‘ new popup record store in Mount Pleasant. A new record store popping up is always good news, but the Future Times crew opening a record store is the stuff that dreams are made of. Expect an eclectic selection of records, old and new, from the best international, domestic and local labels. If you know what’s good for you, head over to Mount Pleasant between 12pm and 7pm on Saturday. Full details in the flyer below.
Before we get to this week’s listings, here’s episode #51 of the Meet the Locals Podcast features a quality slower BPM techno mix from Steve Kirn, making his triumphant return to the podcast.
Here’s the full listings for this weekend, including all my Top Picks from Thursday through Sunday. As mentioned previously, you’ll find a number of Pride Underground events below, but for more in depth insight, make sure you check out DC House Grooves‘ Pride Underground 2017 post by TNX‘s Tommy Cornelis.
