DC House Grooves Midweek Round Up: The Best Underground House and Electronic Music Events in Washington DC Wednesday February 25

Here goes with something new: the DC House Groove Mideweek Round Up. Recently we’ve started to see some great parties showing up on Wednesday night, but since we only cover Thursday to Sunday in the weekend round up, we haven’t been covering them. Why not just publish the weekend round up a couple of days earlier, you ask? Well, it takes a few days to compile and write the Weekend Round Up, and since some weekend events aren’t announced until Wednesday or Thursday, publishing on Tuesday isn’t an option. We figured we’d try out a Midweek Round Up covering Wednesday night events, published each week on Wednesday morning, to see if it works. Same format as the Weekend Round Up, with our picks of the best events, then listings of everything we know about. Check it out, and let us know what you think.

Before we dive in to the Wednesday picks, here’s something to listen to today to get you warmed up for Wednesday night: the full recording of Body Werk with Andy Grant and R&B, recorded live in the Flash Bar on February 13, for the most part playing back to back to back. 6 hours of quality grooves to get you through your working day!

So here are our picks for Wednesday night. Some really great events here if you’re up for a spot of midweek grooving. Make sure you click through the the event page and click Join if you plan on attending.

Wednesday Picks

Silence in Metropolis presents SIM Selections at Bump’n’Grind

First up for Wednesday is Silence in Metropolis presents SIM Selections at Bump’n’Grind coffee shop in Silver Spring. From 7pm to 9pm, DJs from local record label Silence in Metropolis will be spinning their favorite new tunes on vinyl. Expect quality deep house grooves, coffee shop style. Stop by the shop, grab a cup of their fine, expertly prepared, coffee and a sandwich, sit back and enjoy the SIM selections. While you’re there, check out the vinyl for sale, and maybe pick up a few twelves to take home with you. If you can’t make it to the store, you can tune in on the Bump’n’Grind Mixlr page.

MK with Beckwith & DJ Nav at U Street Music Hall

Top pick for Wednesday night is MK with Beckwith DJ Nav at U Street Music Hall. To anyone who was tuned into the deep house scene in the 90s, MK should need no introduction. A hugely prolific remixer, his Discogs page lists no less than 504 remix credits. His instantly recognizable remix style was behind countless classic deep house tunes in the early nineties, and his mixes brought credibility and whole new audiences to artists who would have otherwise never seen the light of day. Case in point, his ground breaking The Dub of Doom mix of Nightcrawlers – Push The Feeling On, which, after a couple of years of regular play in underground clubs, broke through to the mainstream and reached number 3 on the UK singles chart in 1995. You’d be hard pushed to find anyone who can tell you what the original track sounds like, but play them the The Dub of Doom and you’ll see instant recognition. From the late nineties through the early 2000s, MK seemed to take a break from production, but the last few years have seen him back in the saddle, with new original productions, remixes and collaborations with artists such as Omar S and Lee Foss. We’re not sure whether he’ll be bringing the newer stuff to U Hall on Wednesday night, or whether he’ll be walking down memory lane, throwing down a greatest hits set, but whichever way it goes, we predict a great night out.  Advanced tickets are $15 from Ticketfly, but it is free before 11pm for 21+, so you’ve got a great incentive to get there early to catch producer DJ Nav‘s set.

Nu Androids Presents Friend Within at Flash

Our other pick for Wednesday night is Nu Androids Presents Friend Within at Flash, with support from local favorite Chris Nitti (ROAM, U Street Music Hall) and DJ MLEM, and DJ Khaleel in the Flash Bar. The Nu Androids crew have been bringing some great talent to Flash recently, and we’ve heard great things about the vibe at their parties. While we can’t say we’re overly keen on the headliner Wednesday night, this is a great opportunity to hear Chris Nitti work his magic on Flash’s fine sound system, and we’re sure the Wednesday crowd will make for a fun night on the dance floor. Keep a close eye on the Nu Androids Wednesday parties, though. Next week’s headliner is Detroit legend Kenny Larkin, with support from Navbox and Raffi. A solid candidate for next week’s Midweek Round Up top pick! Advanced tickets are $15 from Ticketfly. 21+.

Those are our picks for Wednesday night, and here’s our listings of all the other events we know about. If you plan on attending, make sure you click through to the event page and click Join.

DC House Grooves Meet The Locals Podcast #6: DJ Meegs

Well we said some time ago that the next mix in the DC House Grooves Meet the Locals Podcast would be from one of the many talented female DJs in Washington DC, and we’ve been waiting patiently for one of the ladies to step up to the plate. We’re pleased to bring you this great mix from DJ Meegs, a familiar face on the DC underground scene. Over to Meegs to tell us a bit about herself and her mix:

“Growing up in a large, loud & musically inclined Irish-American family I guess you could say my interests have revolved around social gatherings fueled by music & dancing since birth. My parents enrolled me in Irish dancing when I was four & shortly thereafter we began hosting weekly Irish music lessons at our house for over a decade. My first instruments were the tin whistle & the bodhran (Irish drum) so I danced & played competitively while performing up & down the East Coast until college when, finally and gratefully, I was introduced to electronic music.

After graduation I moved to the West Coast (LA) where, alas, I heard the sweet, sweet sounds of Deep House music. I became a local fixture at Marques Wyatt’s ‘DEEP’ parties & since then my love affair with deep, soulful, melodic music with thumping bass lines has been one of the few constants in my life. Over the next 10 years I submerged myself in the scene as a dancer, promoter, percussionist, event producer & after Burning Man 2006, a DJ. After leaving LA I spent a year in New Zealand hosting a show on Radio Ponsonby before coming home to DC.

These last couple of years have brought about a lot of great change or evolution in the music industry from the type of technological gear that is available, to the fusion & birth of new genres. I try to embrace the technology which has done me well considering I was hard-pressed differentiating an RCA cable with an extension chord when I first considered becoming a DJ! And of course my “record bag” consists of more than just the deep, soulful, tribal house that initially had me smitten. However, tracks with a driving beat, walking bass-lines, melody and lyrics with emotional content that THUMP will always get heavy rotation, as you will hear in this mix.

As a recent convert to Traktor which offers a seemingly limitless amount of options for getting creative with the music, I used Traktor Pro 2 software, Kontrol Z1 w/a built-in soundcard for my mixer, Kontrol X1 for sound FX & loops, 2 standard decks & 2 remix decks. Most of the mix incorporates all 4 decks, It ain’t perfect, but it sure is fun!! Hope you enjoy!”

DC House Grooves Meet The Locals Podcast #2: Chadwick

DJ Chadwick

DJ Chadwick

For episode #2 of the DC House Grooves Meet the Locals podcast we’ve got a great mix from Flash resident Chadwick. Here’s what Chadwick has to say about this mix: “My podcast for DC House Grooves is based on my set from the last Resident Night party at Flash. It’s a peak hour blend of techno, house and tribal rhythms layered with classic loops, effects, acapellas and personal edits. The crowd stayed late and I had a really good time playing off of their energy. The mix was created on 4 decks with 4 effects and most all of the tracks are re-touched live by enhancing the breakdowns, extending parts and blending new elements to build a mix that reflects my sets at Flash. Most importantly though, I hope it keeps your attention and throws a few surprises along the way. Enjoy!”

You can catch Chadwick next at The House That U Built on Sunday, September 28th at Dirty Bar in Washington, DC:

and on Saturday, October 4 in Brooklyn, NYC for Gratitude *NY present Axis Mundi on the Mayan Stage:

DC House Grooves Weekend Round Up: The Best Underground House and Electronic Music Events in Washington DC September 4 – September 7

Last weekend saw another amazing line up of events in DC. High points for us were Beautiful Swimmers at U Street Music Hall, particularly the 1432R DJs who were dropping tracks from the likes of Balihu and Fritz Wentink, and Sundays Rooftop with Birdsmakingmachine. The boys from Argentina braved the rain to deliver an on point live set, following it up with a superb DJ set, and the supporting sets from our own Andy GrantChris Nitti, YacoCollins and R&B were just what the doctor ordered. Probably a good job it rained, as there was serious fire on the dance floor!

This coming weekend, DC has another incredible line up of underground house and electronic music events to choose from. Many of the DC Burner crew will be back from their shennanigans in the desert, and it will be great to see their happy, smiling faces on the dance floor again and to get the inside scoop about their antics on the Playa! Here are our picks for each night, and you’ll find the full listings below. If you plan on attending an event, click through the the event page and click Join to let the promoters know you’re in.

Thursday picks:

Top pick for Thursday has to be Ice Cream Jubilee at Lost on Thusdays, with Jubilee and Ramirez at the controls. The Lost crew will be celebrating Jubilee‘s birthday, and you can expect the usual friends and family vibe on one of the best rooftops in the city. As always, there is no cover, and they’ll have all the usual drinks specials. You can check out Jubilee and Ramirez on the DC House Grooves radio show here:

Our other top pick for some quality local DJ action on Thursday is Philip Goyette‘s Transmission 4/4 at The Velvet Lounge. This week’s guest is local favorite Chris Nitti. Expect Philip and Chris to bring you the finest in deep house, techno and garage.  You can get a taste of Chris Nitti’s sound on the DC House Grooves radio show here:

Friday picks:

On Friday, we recommend kicking of the formal start to your weekend by tuning in to the Internet radio show WTF?!? with Corduroy Mavericks & Kochi, which starts at 5pm ET and runs until 7pm. Perfect for your commute home. You can tune in at http://www.sugarshackrecordings.com/.

Our top pick for Friday night is Residents’ Night at Flash with Chadwick, Chris Nitti, Leo Lee at Flash. We love it when local talent gets a chance to work the main floor at Flash all night long, and with Chadwick, Chris and Leo behind the decks you know you’re in for a treat. Plus, Chadwick looks so dashing in the promo pic, how could you not go?

Our other main pick for Friday is Lee Foss w/ Charles Martin, Mr. Bonkerz. While we’re not the biggest Lee Foss fans here at DC House Grooves, we’re recommending this one for the local openers Charles Martin and Mr Bonkerz. It’s free before 11pm for 21+, so you’ve got a good incentive to get there early and catch their sets. You can check out Mr. Bonkerz bringing the disco funk vibes at ESL last weekend here:

Finally for Friday, if soulful house, classics, and baby powder on the dance floor is what you’re looking for, then we suggest getting yourself over to Zeba Bar for Klubnut.com’s A Musical Obsession Pt. 1 – Virgo Bash with Klubnut resident DJs Les Cole and Ernest Fountain. These guys have been broadcasting quality house music from http://www.klubnut.com  and throwing great parties for over 10 years, and Zeba is one of our favorite, more intimate venues in town, so we expect this to be a good one!

If you’re up in Baltimore on Friday, we suggest you head over to the Red Maple, where local DC house music hero Sam Burns will be headlining, with support form Mz Behavin’ and Calvin Garner.

Saturday picks:

Top pick for Saturday is Garth & Jenö Back 2 Back with support from Solomon Sanchez at Flash. The prospect of hearing Garth & Jenö go back to back on Flash’s state of the art sound system is enough for us to give a strong recommendation, but for us the the main attraction is Solomon Sanchez’ opening set. Expect deep, grinding grooves to tease you on the dance floor and get you grooving. If the main floor isn’t enough, DinoWainright and Jon Swink from the Wizdom crew will be taking over the Flash Bar. No cover before 11pm, so get there early and let Solomon get you into the groove.

Our other pick for Saturday is ESL Saturdays, where our favorite local DJ, Bump’n’Grind‘s Joe L, will be holding things down in the Gold Room, with support from Philip Goyette, Trev-ski will be handling the Main Room, and Mr. Bonkerz will be out on the patio, supported by Remote Ctrl. Possibly the best lineup of local talent on offer this weekend, and an excellent choice if you want three dance floors to choose from, all under one roof.

Our super top secret underground pick for Saturday is….shhhhhh. I’ve said too much. I could tell you, but then I’d have to kill you. Keep your ears to the ground, folks.

Last but not least for Saturday, for something a bit more intimate, head down to Backbar for Chain Reaction with local producer super star DJ Nav, with support from DJ Christopher and DJ Daryl Northrop. A great opportunity to hear DJ Nav playing on a banging sound system in a tiny venue. You can check out Nav’s DC House Grooves session from earlier this year here:

Sunday picks:

Top pick for Sunday is Sunglass Sundays on the Public Bar rooftop with Phonique playing a 4 hour set, supported by DJ Alkimist, Chris Nitti, Heather FemiaLeonardo Lee and DC House Grooves favorites Jubilee & Ramirez. It’s almost the end of the Sunglass Sundays season, so if you haven’t checked it out yet, this is definitely worth a look. Free before 4pm, $10 after, so there’s a good incentive to get there early.

Across the street on the Dirty Bar rooftop is our standing Sunday pick The House that U Built. This week’s DJs are Buster, The Elders, Charles Martin, Jeffrey Taylor and Vanniety Kills. There’s always a great vibe at Dirty Bar on a Sunday, and the fantastic Dynacord sound system always draws you onto the dance floor.

Finally, if you’re looking for some quality music from local DJs in a more intimate setting on Sunday, why not checkout the Needlexchange at The Velvet Lounge with the TNX DJs Bil Todd, Baronhawk and Tommy Cornelis. Alternatively, if you’re up in Columbia Heights, Zeba Sunday Sessions at Zeba Bar with Christauff and Stylo is always a good bet for Sunday evening.

Monday pick:

To wrap up your weekend, our regular Monday night pick is Motown on Mondays at Den of Thieves. This week’s guest is DJ KC, supported by the regular DJs Dmac, Jayclue, and Rusty B. Always a good bet for decompressing and comparing notes after dancing all weekend.

That wraps it up for this week’s picks, so let’s take a look a the listings. Remember to click through to the Facebook event pages for more details, and don’t forget to click Join if you plan on attending.
