Feeling super lazy, so phoning in the post this week. I’ve included the links to my Top Picks for the weekend below, just click through to see my list for each day, Thursday through Sunday. You can catch me and Katrina Mir this Friday spinning open to close at DC’s favorite Ibiza-style rooftop restaurant / bar, El Techo. Join us for a bite to eat, a drink or three and a dance! You know it makes sense. I may even take requests, as long you don’t request something that sucks.
Plenty of great stuff to choose from! Wherever you go this weekend, have an amazing time, and hopefully I’ll be feeling motivated next week to put some effort into a proper DC House Grooves post. See you on the dance floor!
Just about recovered from another amazing weekend, which we kicked off back in the Green Room at Flash for We Dig Vinyl with Elliot Sloan, Symmetrical, Wade Hammes, Katrina Mir and your friendly neighborhood DC House Grooves correspondent right here, Andy Grant, slinging nothing but wax all night long. Everyone dug real deep in their collections, and we got to hear some really interesting records that don’t often get played out. If you’re curious about where we find all these great records, or if you’ve got some great underground wax to share, make sure you join the We Dig Vinyl: An Underground Music Bulletin group on Facebook. Always learning about great new finds in that group!
Sunday night saw the season finale of Beats Maneuver at Public Bar, with an amazing all-female line uo featuring Club Cuttlefish‘s Sleepy G with a killer opening set, Katrina Mir setting things up beautifully for a fantastic set by headliner Lyssa, and KayLaSoul bringing things to a delightful close. Doing it right, Beats Maneuver style! Huge thanks to everyone who came out, and to the whole team at Public Bar for working with us over the last few months. We’ve had some great times to a soundtrack of great house music this season, and we’re looking forward to what comes next. Make sure you like the Beats Maneuver Facebook Page, and of course, check DC House Grooves each and every week for news and info on upcoming Beats Maneuver events. In the meantime, here’s Rissa Garcia‘s headline set from Beats Maneuver, recorded live on the Public Bar rooftop on August 12.
OK, let’s get down to business. It’s Labor Day Weekend, and there’s a ridiculous number of incredible events happening here in the District and in Baltimore to keep you dancing Thursday through Monday. I can tell you right now I’m not going to be able to give everything the coverage it deserves, but I’ll do my best. This Labor Day Monday, DC House Grooves is a proud partner in the Capital House Music Festival 2018 in Meridian Hill Park. This year’s festival includes an incredible line up of house music and world music, featuring The Ecussionist, Deacon Izzy & the Congregation, DJ Jay Jay, Chosen, Andy Grant (yeah, that’s me), Benoit, Tee Alford, DJ Tantra and Sam The Man Burns. This is a FREE FESTIVAL to raise awareness and funds for Inner City Youth Music Programs. It’s a family friendly event, and all are welcome. Bring chairs, blankets, picnic baskets, refreshments, whatever you need, just be aware that grills and alcohol are prohibited in the park. All the required permits are in place, so we’re all set to kick things off at 12pm on Labor Day Monday, grooving in the park until 9pm. Bring your smiles and positive energy to the park on Monday, and let’s make it a Labor Day to remember!
OK, I know what you’re thinking; Capital House Music Festival 2018 is on Monday. What are you going to do until then? How does an epic disco festival across two venues featuring disco legends from across the globe and two all night parties where you can dance until sunrise sound? Well, that’s just what’s on offer with the Blisspop Disco Fest at U Street Music Hall and the 9:30 Club, with an incredible line up featuring disco legend Giorgio Moroder, Claptone, François K, Holy Ghost, Horse Meat Disco, Ultra Naté, Nancy Whang, Juan MacLean, Jacques Renault with support from locals Eau Claire, Charles Feelgood, Sleaze, Ozker & Will Eastman, and that’s not to mention the closing party in association with Better Listen Records, featuring Daniel T, Matpat, Martín Miguel & StrikeStone! Serious disco bliss to keep you dancing from Friday through Sunday! I have included all the advance ticket and info links for all five events below. Advance tickets are highly recommended to reserve your spot on the dance floor.
Blisspop Disco Fest Friday August 31
Claptone with François K, Charles Feelgood & Eau Claire at 9:30 Club
Those events mentioned above barely even scratch the surface of what’s on offer this weekend! I’ve shared all the best events on my radar in Washington DC & Baltimore to the DC House Grooves Facebook Page, and you can see the full list for each day by clicking on the links below:
I recommend taking your time to look through the list for each day, as there’s some great events lurking in there, including Blueprint with Arthur Kimskii & Jandro at Jimmy Valentine’s on Friday night, Ron Trent at the Darkroom on Saturday, Saeed Younan‘s rooftop extravaganza with Oliver Dollar at Public Bar, Reflections Labor Day Edition at Jimmy Valentine’s, Sunday Love with Tornado Wallace at Flash and V.sions with Laurine & Jubilee at The Fridge Art Gallery on Sunday, and ROAM on a BOAT & Skate Fever on Monday. And that’s not to mention all the events happening leading up to and after Collective Minds in Baltimore this weekend. I’ve included all the Baltimore events on DC House Grooves, but 4 Hours of Funk‘s Graham Hatke provides a great summary in this post over on Facebook. If you’re in Baltimore, or feel like making the trip this weekend, check it out! If ever there was a weekend to head to Charm City, this might be it.
Right, I gotta bring this week’s post to a close. The rest is up to you! Hope you can join us in the park on Monday, and you never know, I may just see you on the dance floor before then. I’ll be back here with another update, same time, same place next week with everything you need to know to plan your weekend on the dance floor right here in Washington DC.
Fun times in the Green Room at Flash last Friday! The DC House Grooves crew took over the Green Room for the evening, with residents Ramirez, Katrina Mir and myself (Andy Grant) going back to back to back all night long. We had an amazing crowd on the dance floor, and the music was on point from start to finish, sounding sweet as on the Funktion Ones. Thanks to everyone who came out to join us, and to the team at Flash for booking us and making sure everything went smoothly on the night. Can’t wait to do it again! The good news is, we recorded the whole night, which you can listen to over on the DC House Grooves SoundCloud page:
Speaking of doing it again, Katrina Mir and I will be back in the Green Room this Friday night, August 24, for We Dig Vinyl alongside Elliott Sloan and Symmetrical for an evening of wax gems from deep in the crates. We’re all going to be diving deep into our collections for rare and interesting jams to serve up direct from the wax, and I can’t wait to hear what everyone brings! I certainly can’t wait to bust out the crown jewels that don’t often see the light of day. In the main room, Fjaak and Antenes bring the technos with local support from Steve Kirn, while in the Flash Bar, DJ Meegs and Marko Peli join forces for another edition of Cider House Mules. Advanced tickets are just $8, but I’m sure I have a few guest spots available. Reach out to me through the DC House Grooves Facebook page if you want one!
Sunday night, we’re back on the rooftop at Public Bar for our last Beats Maneuver event of the season, and we’re going out with another quality lineup featuring Canada’s Lyssa with local support from Sleepy G, KayLaSoul and Katrina Mir. Huge thanks to everyone who has supported us over the season; we’ve had some amazing times with a line up of fantastic DJs who don’t often make it in to Washington DC, including Gigi Testa, Trinidadian Deep, Miles Maeda, DJ Heather and Rissa Garcia, plus great sets from the Beats Maneuver residents and local favorites including Team Zapata, DJ Nav, Jandro & KayLaSoul. Can’t wait to close the season out this Sunday with another killer line up! As always, there’s NO COVER all night long, so the price is definitely right! See you on the dance floor of the Public Bar rooftop this Sunday.
OK, one last thing before this week’s DC House Grooves Top Picks links. This week, we’ve got a new Meet the Locals Podcast from local favorite Jandro, featuring an hour of quality after hours groovers. You can catch Jandro next on August 31 at Blueprint at Jimmy Valentine’s Lonely Hearts Club spinning an all-vinyl minimal set alongside Arthur Kimskii.

This is the bit where I usually write up my highlights for the weekend, but sadly I’m out of time. So much good stuff to choose from, but I just can’t give it all the write up it deserves this week. Playlistwith Jubilee & friends at Eighteenth Street Lounge on Thursday is always on point, and if I wasn’t at Flash on Friday, I’d be sure to be heading down to U Street Music Hall for Werk Ethic with Ken Lazee & Nick Garcia throwing down the very best house and techno from the 90s. Anyway, gotta wrap this up now. Hope to see you all out and about, and I look forward to closing out the weekend with you on the dance floor at Beats Maneuver with Lyssa at Public Bar on Sunday.
Major thanks to everyone who came out to Beats Maneuver with Rissa Garcia on Sunday night. After great sets from Kochi & Katrina Mir, and I guess a half decent effort from me, Rissa really delivered the goods, with a killer set of pure house music that had me throwing some major shapes on the dance floor. It won’t be the last time we see Rissa here in DC, you can be sure of that! DJ Nav and Jandro closed out the night back to back, providing the perfect sound track to a late surge on the dance floor. I can’t wait for the next one, which happens to be just around the corner! Mark August 26 in your calendar, when we’ve got Lyssa flying in from Canada to rock the Beats Maneuver dance floor. Full details coming soon!
Before I get into this week’s events, I’m pleased to announce DC House Grooves is taking part in this year’s Capital House Music Festival in Meridian Hill Park on Labor Day, September 3. This is a free, family friendly festival to raise awareness and funds for Inner City Youth Music Programs, and features a diverse line up including The E Cussionist, Deacon Izzy & the Congregation, DJ Jay Jay, Chosen, Benoit, Tee Alford, DJ Tantra, yours truly Andy Grant and of course the man, the legend, Sam The Man Burns. All permits are in place, and we’ll be lost in the music from 12pm to 9pm. We couldn’t be more excited to be involved in this house music celebration, and we hope you can join us in the park on Labor Day! As for highlights this week, on Thursday, those with an interest in music production should head to Flash early doors for Headroom Listening Sessions, then drum and bass heads should stick around for Cadence with Doc Scott & A-Sides.
