Memorial Day Weekend is here again, the weekend where many of the DC heads skip town for Detroit for Movement Festival and all the associated shenanigans, me and Katrina included. if you’re headed to Detroit, hopefully I’ll see you around. Just remember, it’s DC tradition to be there front and center for Eddie C‘s sunrise set at OK Cool! at TV Lounge. Hope to see you all there!
If you’re sticking around, there’s lots of good stuff to choose from to keep you grooving. With all the big headliners booked elsewhere for the weekend, the holiday weekend provides a great opportunity for locals to take over our favorite clubs, so I highly recommend Friday night at U Street Music Hall with Strikestone!, Hot Coffee, Samantha Francesca and Kundalini on Friday, then Resident Nights vs. DMV Deep at Flash on Saturdaywith Markinthedark, Jacq Jill, Saad Ashraf and Kundalini.
Sunday night sees Jimmy Valentine’s celebrating its 12 year anniversary with a long list of local favorites. Always a family affair at Jimmy’s!
See below for the full list of events over the holiday weekend, Thursday through Sunday, and don’t forget, Facebook users can click the link at the top of each section to see the full list of event pages. There may or may not be a post next week, depending on what state I’m in after going through the Detroit blender. We’ll see what happens 🙂
As I sit down to write this week’s post, I’ve still got a huge grin on my face after last weekend. It was a dream come true to host my friend and mentor, Underground Quality label boss DJ Jus-ed in the DC House Grooves studio as our special guest on the DC House GroovesShow! Huge thanks to Jus-ed for fighting through the jet lag to guest on the show. Having rushed straight to the airport on hardly any sleep after playing Djoon in Paris on Friday, he stepped up to the decks on the DC House Grooves Show just a few hours after landing a Dulles, serving up a fantastic set featuring new and unreleased heat on Underground Quality and EDJ Records, including more than a few from the brand new Always Changing EP by Ed & Jen, available now from the Underground Qualitywebsite. If you missed the show, check it out below on YouTube or SoundCloud. Then on Sunday, after a good night’s rest, Jus-Ed schooled us at Sunday’s Rooftop on the patio at Eighteenth Street Lounge. An amazing end to a wonderful weekend!
The DC House Grooves Show is back with episode #49 on Saturday June 1 with our regular line up featuring me, Andy Grant, Ramirez and Katrina Mir. We’ll be freshly inspired from our trip to Detroit over Memorial Day weekend, and no doubt we’ll be armed with fresh new wax. We’ll also be giving away copies of Jus-ed‘s latest release on Underground Quality, the Jus Me EP. Click Going on the event page, and look out for further details closer to the time.
On to this weekend, and I’ll be holding down the Flash Bar this Saturday with my brother from another mother DJ Kochi, bringing the Vibe open to close. It’s been a minute since I’ve thrown down with Kochi, so I’m really looking forward to this one. As always, the line up at Flash on Saturday is ridiculous, with king of samples Matthew Herbert and Solomon Sanchez on the club leveland Ozelot Ltd, Throe and Taiga in the Green Room. Of course, if you don’t want to go upstairs, you can hang with us in the bar for free!
So what else is happening this weekend? Well Thursday night, techno lovers are in for a treat at U Street Music Hall as Charlotte De Witte and local hero Juana team up to destroy the dance floor. House heads should head directly to Eighteenth Street Lounge for Playlist with Jubilee & Ramirez. Always the best spot for quality house vibes on Thursdays.
Friday night, the right choice for the heads is SEQUENCE with Wata Igarashi, Rhyw, Ron Jackson & Furtive. Hosted in a brand new location with Grand Ancestor sound, you know this one’s going to take you to a new dimension, and hopefully back again safe and sound by sunrise. $20 tickets are still available if you move fast. Not one you want to miss!
Saturday night, the much hyped Boiler Room rolls into town on their North American tour, and they’ve teamed up with ROAM to deliver an amazing line up featuring Discwoman‘s DJ Haram & Ariel Zetina alongside local rising stars Lisa Frank, Jacq Jill & Jett Chandon and hosted by Deep Sugar‘s Lisa Moody at a warehouse location powered by Grand Ancestor sound. If this sounds like your cup of tea, then I hope you’ve already secured a ticket, and this event is complete SOLD OUT. Your only chance of grabbing a ticket at this point is keeping an eye on the RA Resale queue. Of course, you can always watch the proceedings on the Interwebs, so all is not lost!
Disco lovers, consider heading to Eighteenth Street Lounge on Saturday to catch my old college pal, Secret Squirrels & Disco Deviance maestro Dicky Trisco throwing down open to close on the patio. Dicky always gets things moving on the dance floor! And if Dicky Trisco isn’t enough for you, in the Gold Room you can catch Green Shirt Guy himself, Conscious Contact doing what he does best.
Sunday’s highlights include Sunday Love at Flash during the day time, then Sam Burns‘ Underground Soul Solution and Good Buddies at Eighteenth Street Lounge in the evening. Everything you need to keep you dancing through to the early hours of Monday morning.
Here’s my full list of DC House Grooves Top Picks for the weekend, Thursday through Sunday. You know the drill by now; Facebook users can click the link at the top of each section to see a list of event pages. For the rest of you, Google is your friend if you need more info. Hope to see some of you in the Flash Bar on Saturday night!
Big respect to everyone who joined us at Eighteenth Street Lounge last Thursday to celebrate my birthday at Playlist. Now that was a fun time! Big thanks to Jubilee & Ramirez for inviting me to play and to all the staff at Eighteenth Street Lounge for their hospitality. Always a pleasure playing at ESL.
On to this weekend, and we here at DC House Grooves are super excited, because the founder of the Underground Quality record label and Underground Quality Radio where we broadcast our regular show, DJ Jus-Ed, is coming to town! In anticipation of his performance at Sundays Rooftop at Eighteenth Street Lounge on Sunday, Jus-Ed will be joining us in the DC House Grooves studio on Saturday night for a very special edition of the DC House Grooves Show with residents Andy Grant, Ramirez and Katrina Mir, and special guest Jus-Ed. Tune in from 10pm ET at www.undergroundquality.com or at Underground Quality Live.
Then on Sunday night, head to the patio at Eighteenth Street Lounge to catch the man himself throwing down with Benoit at another edition of Sundays Rooftop. No cover, so no excuses! I can’t think of a better way to close out the weekend.
Other highlights this weekend include Black Motion with Jandro at U Street Music Hall, and, of course, Playlist with Jubilee & Ramirez at Eighteenth Street Lounge on Thursday, then on Friday Sprüdel with Vincent Neumann, Juana b2b Arthur Kimskii and Rush Plus is the move for top quality techno with friends and family in an intimate warehouse space. Just remember, advance tickets are required, and it’s BYOB.
Also on Friday, Flash: OFF features Damien Lazarus & Adriatique with locals Sarah Myers, Markinthedark and Mazi R. Flash warehouse parties always deliver the goods, with high production values and four point sound system in a brand new warehouse space. Advance tickets recommended.
Saturday’s highlight is this year’s Funk Parade. If you’re in the U Street area Saturday afternoon, make sure you head to the annual Funky 4 U at Velvet Lounge. Always an amazing line up of locals bringing the funk out in the back yard. Saturday night, I recommend heading to Baltimore for Underground Resistance‘s John Jammin Collins at Darkroom, or Deep Sugar with Ultra Naté & Lisa Moody at Factory 17. Spoiled for choice!
Sunday afternoon, Sunday Love at Flash is always a good time, then we’ll see you on the patio at Eighteenth Street Lounge for Sundays Rooftop with DJ Jus-Ed and Benoit.
Plenty more to choose from this weekend! See below for my full list of DC House Grooves Top Picks, featuring all the best underground house and electronic music events in and around Washington DC this weekend, Thursday through Sunday. See you on the dance floor!
Welcome back to another edition of DC House Grooves Top Picks. Kicking off this week’s edition with a heads up on a couple of events to put in your calendar in the coming weeks. May 10 kicks off the inaugural event of Sprüdel, a new warehouse event curated by Arthur Kimskii and crew. The first event features Vincent Neumann, Juana B2B Arthur Kimskii, and local favorites Rush Plus for what’s sure to be a night of solid tunes and good vibes. The event is described as “…a gathering for all the fun loving freaks, artists, dancers, office workers with secret kinks and everyone in between that needs a fun night on the dance floor. Come play with us.” If that doesn’t entice you through the door, I don’t know what will! Super early bird tickets are already gone to those in the know, but you can still pick up $15 early birds if you move fast.
Another one to put in your calendar is Boiler Room Washington DC: ROAM Warehouse Party on May 18, although if you haven’t grabbed your ticket already, you’ll need to be on the case. Despite the line up not yet being announced, the good ravers of DC couldn’t resist the calling to be seen shuffling behind a well known DJ in the Internet, so the initial release of tickets sold out quickly. 100 more tickets will be released on May 1 at 12pm sharp, and once those are gone, that’s it, no Boiler Room DC for you. Your best bet to make sure you secure a ticket is to sign up for the ROAM Email Listto get a reminder before those tickets go on sale. It’s the place to be seen on May 18, don’t get left out in the cold!
So what about this weekend? Plenty of great events, as usual. I’ll be kicking off my celebrations of 48 rotations around the sun this Friday at Reflectionswith Katrina Mir and Andy Grant at Jimmy Valentine’s Lonely Hearts Club. We’ll be packing several record bags full of heat, playing B2B all vinyl open to close, and it would be just wonderful if you could join us on the dance floor for what’s sure to be a super fun evening filling with nothing but good vibes all the way. No cover, cheap dranks, Martin Audio sound system, and best of all, WE’RE CELEBRATING MY BIRTHDAY! Everything you could ask for in a quality night out on the dance floor. I hope to see you there, although if you can’t make it Friday, mark next Thursday May 2 on your calendar, as I’ll be continuing my birthday celebrations joining Jubilee & Ramirez behind the decks at Playlist at Eighteenth Street Lounge.
On Saturday, we’ll be recovering from a night behind the decks at Jimmys with a night behind the decks on home turf at DC House Grooves HQ, broadcasting episode #047 of the DC House Grooves Show on Underground Quality Radio with me, Katrina Mir and Ramirez. The needle drops at 10pm ET, and by now you know what to expect; quality underground vibes, the right soundtrack to your Saturday night. Audio only stream at Underground Quality, video stream on the Underground Quality Live YouTube channel.
Other highlights this week include Playlist with Jubilee and Ramirez at Eighteenth Street Lounge plus Article004: The Long Count Cycle at U Street Music Hall and Dax J at Flash on Thursday, then on Saturday you can catch Vatican Shadow in a church with the ROAM crew, chillax on the dance floor at the Cloudwatch 25 year anniversary at Dark Room, Baltimore or get into a spot of fire dancing at the first Sunset & Chill of the season featuring Fort Knox 5 at Olde City Farm & Garden.
Sunday afternoon, do not pass Go, do not collect $200, head directly to Flash for Sunday Love with new jersey house legend Tony Humphries with local support from Heather Femia, Mazi and DJ Soul. An incredible Sunday Love line up in the Green Room, and with the Love Bazaar Marketplace on the club level, you’ve got all the ingredients for an amazing Sunday evening. Pro tip: don’t pay door prices, grab your tix in advance for $12.
Sunday night, head to Eighteenth Street Lounge for Sam Burns’ weekly Underground Soul Solution and the next edition of Sundays Rooftop with Detroit OG Allan Ester and Benoit. The perfect way to wrap up your weekend on the dance floor.
See below for all my Top Picks for the weekend, Thursday through Sunday. Facebook users can click the title for each section to view the list of event pages over on Facebook. For the rest of you, Google is your friend. See you on the dance floor, and of course, right here, same time, same place, next week.
